Can Clayton lure new businesses?

A few new businesses are trickling into Clayton County. At a time when much of the attention is focusing on problems in the school system, it’s refreshing to learn new jobs are being created. Read my latest blog entry on Wordpress

Should the inmate vote count?

No matter which candidate you supported, most Americans made it their business to cast a ballot in this historic election and apparently, Clayton County inmates were no exception.

Recently, the Clayton County board of elections voted not to accept at least six valid ballots from inmates which were not properly delivered by a legally authorized representative. As per Georgia law, prisoners not on probation or serving a sentence are allowed to vote via absentee ballot.

A total of 12 ballots are in question. According to the AJC, Commission Chair Eldrin Bell and the Clayton County NAACP asked the Board to reconsider their decision. Although these votes won’t affect the end result, do you believe these inmates have been disenfranchised? Should their votes be counted? On another note, it looks like there will be a runoff between senatorial candidates Jim Martin and incumbent Saxby Chambliss. According to analysts, democrats don’t usually make the extra effort to return to the polls for runoff elections.
Despite the fact that Clayton county led Georgia in votes for President-elect Barack Obama, 67 percent of residents voted, and many came out because of the presidential election. Republicans are counting on democrats not coming out again so that Chambliss can easily reclaim his senate seat and stop the super majority the democrats covet.

In addition, two local runoffs coming up are for Districts 1 and 9 so that we can finally have a full school board. For what it’s worth I’ll say again it’s disappointing that so many showed up for the general election, but didn’t care enough to vote in past local elections given the problems with Clayton’s board of education.

Is either the senate or school board race important enough for you to return to the polls on December 2?

Who cares? Just get every law enforcement officer out on the streets of Clayton so we can get our county back. The Sheriff’s office should still be able to fight crime and serve warrants. Shouldn’t leave that up to CCPD. We need all the help we can get!!!

If inmates really cared about voting, they wouldn’t break the law and end up in jail and wouldn’t have to worry about their vote not being counted. If their votes were needed to make a decision one way or the other I’d say count em, but since they don’t, forget em.

Pam Adamson for District 1 school board member! Although if Cleopatra won I could live with that, both showed they care about ccps.

I am confused, the term “prisoners” means incarcerated. If they are incarcerated they should not be allowed to vote and no their vote shouldn’t count. Yes I will return for the runoffs.

If the inmates were qualified to vote, then their votes should absolutely be counted.

(Prisoners in the county jail awaiting trial may not be on probation or serving a sentence.)

I will vote in the Senate run-off just like I voted in the Primary and the Primary run-off. Voting is a civic duty, just like paying taxes and serving on a jury.

How people can ignore their duty is beyond me.

Argh!! Please, not more of this ‘Whitey’ supresses the Black prison vote nonsense.

Per GA law cited above - Doesn’t the word prisoner mean that they are serving a sentence (an excluded voter class)? Or did you mean guys like T.I. who have been sentenced, but are not prisoners (in jail), nor out on probation (still in the system)?

Why is it that a certain party and group of people like to pander to the lowest common denominator in society? THESE PEOPLE HURT/KILLED PEOPLE! Let them rot!

If these fellows cared about our society, they would NOT have commited FELONIES which cost them the PRIVLEDGE (NOT RIGHT) to vote. Everbody cannot vote - a teen under 18 can’t vote, illegals can’t vote, permanent residents can’t vote, people who don’t register can’t vote, etc. So boohoo! Go cry for their murdered, raped, robbed, and/or assaulted victims, not these criminals.

They can worry about their vote when their debt to society is paid! And for those special ones who murder, rape, or molest children - they should NEVER be granted voting right privledges ever again!

If they are allowed to vote and submitted their votes on time while following absentee voting standards, yes they should be counted. If they were not submitted in accordance with the current standards, they should not be allowed. Any disagreement with the process should be addressed going forward with the possibility of being changed in the future.

I will vote in the run-off.

If the votes wont affect the outcome, then why do they need to be counted? Just in case they affect the outcome? They should be allowed to vote once they are no longer incarcerated. People in jail awaiting trial should not be allowed to vote, they can’t get up and go to the store when they wont to. Clear up the legal matters and then vote.

The shame is there are thousands of people walking around FREE in Clayco who didn’t think twice about skipping important elections this year (including the general one based on the 67% turnout, that’s 33% of Clayton who just don’t care). But I’ll bet they complain the loudest and are the ones on TV screaming “my baby can’t go to college now”.

Yep I’ll vote Dec. 2, although I skipped voting for senator in the general cuz I felt they were equally bad, maybe one of them will change my mind before runoff.

As a democrat I don’t want the democrats to have a super majority & I’d feel the same if the republicans had a chance at super majority. no one political party should have that much power, just my opinion. But haven’t seen anything from Chambliss that makes me want to vote for him either.

No the inmates votes should not be counted. Just because they have not been adjudicated as guilty when they submitted their ballots does not mean they are not guilty. I would bet even money that at least half of those prisoners in this instance will be found guilty. Since we cannot determine which, if any, of those “voters” will be exhonerated I feel we shouldn’t count any of them.

I will be voting in the December 2 runoffs.

Whatever happened to INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY? Far to many people on this blog have a Communist mentality of Guilty until proven innocent. Yet these same people will wave the flag and consider themselves patriotic, without understanding that their views are more in line with Kim Jong Ill.
On another note, two members of the elections board let their chairman of the talk them out of sticking to their guns. How in the hell do you become a member of the elections board and you don’t know or seek legal advice from your attorney about a situation like this? Everyone who is in jail has not been convicted of a crime. Many are awaiting trial to prove hemselves innocent. What about the black men who were detained and arrested and charged and were awaiting trial when that crazy white woman drowned her kids in the resevoir and said a black man carjacked her? They were in jail and were probaly going to get convicted if it had been an all white jury, all white judge, prsecutor etc. Fortunantly for them she broke down and confessed. Our legal system is not perfect and race plays a major factor in it. Should those black men lose their right to vote while they sit in jail? I find it funny that all the people saying yes are those same flag waving, ultra conservative, country first bumper sticker people who are only concerned about the right to bear arms. All the other rights don’t matter untill it’s them who are in the legal grinder.

The reason this law should be enacted is because the Greedy has system covert system in place to criminalize and victimize the poor and minority. Then they run them though a prejudice justice system designed to send the ones criminalized and victimized by prejudice unjust court system to the other Greedy creation, “The Prison Industrial System”, then take their vote right.

However, things are looking up, pray for President Obama, the Greedy is afraid he will somehow change the system and cut into their PROFIT. PROFIT=Money is the Only reason Clayton’s 50,000 Black Children don’t have accreditation Today.

The Greedy are lining up Clayton’s 50,000 Black Children for “The Prison Industrial System”.

Great subject today Kim! From what I’ve learned from the incident regarding the rejection of the inmates’ votes, it looks like our election office people didn’t do the right thing. Sometimes technicalities over-rule our sense of human sensitivity and that is really sad. Since these inmates were incarcerated and depended on a legal authorized carrier to deliver their votes, then it should have been counted….even if the legal carrier faulted somehow. It seems that elections in general continue to expose some human rights problems that linger in this country. Even with major part of elections behind us, election officials should reconsider their earlier decision and let these votes be counted. Regarding the upcoming run-off elections, it’s just as important that we as voters return to the polls. You know, sometimes it’s the blind spots that tend to hit us the hardest and run-off elections are very important to keep in mind and participate in. In other words, it ain’t over until it’s over!

INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY is a concept for a court of law, not necessarily the court of public opinion. If somone commits a heinous crime they are guilty when they commit the crime, not just when convicted in a court of law. We, as citizens, can only hope that those who are incarcerated are guilty when jailed. If they are not, and the evidence is not compelling enough, our system allows for restitution for those falsely arrested.

Once again, it’s all about race and supression of the black folk. NAACP is only involved because the people are black, if they were hispanic or “gasp” white, they woudn’t care if their votes were counted or not. This is just a cheap trick to get more democratic votes as if ACORN hasn’t trumped up enough votes already.

Clayton County has gone down the toilet. Part of the reason is you have black leaders in power who fail to focus on the county as a whole and help to move us forward. Instead, they look for ways to find how whitey is suppressing the black folk. We have got to quit focusing on cheap theatrics and get this county back in shape.

Affirmative action is a joke. 400 years of slavery and suppression? Your ancestors and those who lived through the 60’s have a leg to stand on, but most of the young folk today have no idea what that was like, yet they claim to be suppressed? As long as you keep this racist whitey hates me mentality, you will never prosper as a community. Not even Barac Hussein Obama can make you rich or better your lives financially. SELF motivation is key.

I also love it when black people bring up race, what about those wonderful black politicians in this county who use racist comments about white people running for office? Again, basing everything about race will only keep you down. You may think the world and the US owe you something, but as long as you keep standing with your hand out, you are going to be dissapointed.

Thank God I am leaving this sad county. Good luck, and hopefully you will wake up some day. Black Power Baby!

Ifsomeone is in jail awaiting their trial and has not been convicted of a felony then they should be allowed to vote. I find it ironic that voter suppresion techniques are used to suppress the black vote in many cases. Black vote = Democratic vote so is it farfetched to infere the republicans are behind the voter suppression efforts? And, if so, when they claim America first, are they speaking of all Americans? or just the “real” Americans Palin spoke of?

Mass Media has nothing to do with it! it is the ultra conservative right that has hijacked your party that has led to the demise of the GOP. Case in point, The Gop was so tough on illegal immegrants but it was republican business owners who hired them. It sure was not Shameka in the hood collecting welfare that was hiring illegal immegrants. As a result, Just about all the western states (with large Hispanic populations) went for Obama! This is the beginning of the end of the GOP as we know it. And if they think Sara palin is the future of the party then the Democrats should keep power for many years to come should they not find a way to blow it like the Georgia Democrats do.

As far as the Republicans allowing people to govern themselves is plain baloney! peope governing themselves is called anarchy! Look how well it works in Somalia. Gop say they are about conservative fiscal spending=Largest debt in national history, Smaller government, less regulation=largest government bailout of critical industries by government=socialism,. Face it, They have to re-invent their platform or they are doomed! Watch out Georgia, we’re about to turn blue

To Bloggers: MLK4$,Idiot & Blast from Past; I kind of agree with what you say about Black run governments around the country. They’re weak and often times fail the populous. A lot of these Black Officials are strong and are headed in the right direction.

However, the white man has had his hands in those same governments for Centuries, in some cases thousands of years; and all a smart white man have to do is find about five or six “Uncle Toms”. You know the ones who can be bought for a ‘Nickel” a pack, to make friends or infiltrate these black run governments, find out things then run tell the greedy white man.

Who will run to the Mass Media and “Exploit the Black government. See, “Uncle Tom” Negroes like Eddie White, Rod Johnson, Elgrin Bell, Charlton Bivins, Mike Glanton; the white man don’t allow their dumb masses into their inner circle, so the white man don’t exploit his self in the Media.

See, the problem with these type “Uncle Toms” is they suffer from Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS); they need to hold a white man main vein while he “p” to find self-worth. I wish somebody tell these Negroes that its 2008 and their FREE.

Clayton Schools Ethics Panel off to rocky start.

Big supprise. For the second time, the Ethics Commission has failed to have enough people together for a quorum. Maybe if those, that were put in by our local state reps only for political reasons, should resign and get someone on this commission that understands the seriousness of what the Commission is for. This is not a place to put someone so they can brag to their friends. We need those who understand the problems and will be committed to the meetings, approx 4 per year, and be committed to seeking out facts and making decisions. Right now it seems - Same old, same old.

And when did this become just for the ethics of the BOE - it was sold to the people of Clayton as an Ethics Commission for all public oficials in the county. I guess the local state reps bowed down the pressures from the local officials that were to be under the former stated reason for this Ethics Commission.

Our local state reps should grow a pair and do what is right by the people they represent. Do not bow to local political pressure and put committed people on this Ethics Commission.

Eldrin Bell is directly responsible for Clayton County loosing a $2.6 million dollar federal homeland security grant. He stalled on signing the grant paperwork for months and it has now expired. The Clayton County share will be divided up among the 5 remaining grantee’s - Fulton Co, Dekalb Co, Cobb Co, Gwinnett Co and the City of Atlanta. This grant was for public safety and very important. What a waste. Is it too early to start a recall effort on him before he is sworn in for term #2?
