Who gets your vote? Why or why not?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After this election, Clayton will finally have the brand new board many hoped for when the accreditation debacle began. Who will get your vote? Why, or why not?
DISTRICT ONE (also running: Paulette Stewart): Former Headmaster of Mt. Zion Christian Academy Dr. Pam Adamson (betterschools@bellsouth.net) has worked in CCPS and currently serves as Chairperson for SACS accreditation scho ol visits. Cleopatra Ballantyne (cleopatraballantyne@cleoforclaytoncounty.com) served on school advisory boards and worked to implement academic programs to reduce high school dropouts and a checks/balances system to ensure each child has textbooks. Dr. Jean Brown (jbbell514@aol.com) would like to see greater communication, professionalism, and accountability between teachers/administrators and our BOE. William Callier’s (callier@bellsouth.net) priorities include regaining accreditation, restoring the community’s confidence in the BOE and allocating funds to support the needs of students and teachers. Whayne Clarke is dedicated to ensuring transparency in school board operations, and will work collaboratively with stakeholders to regain accreditation by ensuring the SACS mandates are satisfied. Dominick Crea’s experience will help the BOE objectively and ethically oversee the restoration of accreditation, and fight to make CCPS the best in Georgia. Wendy Labat has been involved with CCPS in various capacities, and understands what needs to be done beyond the accreditation crisis. Maggie Martinez ;work as a team player as long as the decisions that are taking place benefit the children of Clayton County and the community as a whole.” Melody Totten (meltotten@bellsouth.net) “ will work tirelessly to support educational programs that would make our children competitive in the world economy, ensure District accountability and collaborate effectively with other Board members.”
DISTRICT TWO: “With parents and stakeholders working together with the BOE, we will ‘See what we CAN DO in District 2!’” says Della Ashley (ashleyfordistrict2@gmail.com; 770-827-0222), who is determined to improve CCPS, communication and financial accountability. Wanda Smith says, “The curriculum must be improved to ensure that students develop into well-educated socially responsible adults. I want to make a difference to see the difference.”
DISTRICT FIVE: “When elected, regaining accreditation will be my first priority,” says Ophelia Burroughs. Diana Nicholson contends, “As a former educator, I have experience in the public educational system. As a parent, I know how important it is to regain accreditation for our children’s futures. As your CCBOE representative, I will remember I am here for the children”.
DISTRICT NINE: “I am an advocate, I take ownership of this school system and the present dilemma. [Other candidates] “say” they are for the children, I live it!” says Charlton Bivins. After regaining accreditation, CCFD Investigator and former CCPS substitute teacher Ernest Donaldson (edonaldson.d9@gmail.com) wants to come up with a disciplinary program with standards and a way for parents and teachers to communicate with the board. Irene Lewis (irenelewis4ccdist9@mindspring.com) plans to “Spearhead institutional changes to provide students an educational system of excellence, effectiveness, and fiscal accountability, and promote community involvement.” James Searcy applauds the Superintendent’s recent efforts to keep people updated on how things are going, and would like to “ broaden those communication tools so that concerned parents and stakeholders who don’t have access (or desire) to use computers can still get the word.” Toney Walker (tblade92@bellsouth.net) will “ bring to the table a clear, holistic understanding of what is necessary for children to experience academic success. I envision CCPS with full accreditation by SACS and whose students meet and exceed yearly testing goals.”
