Best laid plans for CCPS?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Corrective Superintendent John Thompson in conjunction with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement will unveil a plan of action to reinstate accreditation. Mark Elgart and Thompson will jointly address the BOE at tonight’s meeting.
As per press release, “The plan includes specific steps the school district must implement in order to meet the remaining eight requirements for accreditation,” says Acting Director of Communications Charles White and AdvancED Vice President of Communications Jennifer H. Oliver.
Thompson always stated that SACS was vague as to whether or not they were on the right track to retaining accreditation, and believed they only had to be working towards completing the nine mandates, not actually accomplishing them, prior to losing accreditation.
Time is running out fast. This action plan should clarify exactly what needs to happen, when and by whom so that we can successfully achieve those final eight mandates. A clearly defined plan will also help residents hold our superintendent and board members accountable, if necessary.
Residents will surely play a role in this action plan as well, and we will need to step up in several ways if we want Clayton County Public Schools to be accredited come Sept. 1, 2009. That means attending board meetings, making our concerns heard during public comments, getting involved in our school system, VOTING and a host of other duties.
In addition, being sworn in tonight are: Lindsey McDaniel III (District 2), Jessie Goree (District 3), Trena Morris (District 5) and Mary Baker, who will serve until the end of the year (District 6). This ceremony will begin at 5:45 p.m.
The BOE meeting will take place in the Board Room of the CCPS Administrative Complex, 1058 Fifth Avenue in Jonesboro, with the Executive Session beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting itself at 7 p.m.
Will you attend tonight’s meeting? Does SACS’ involvement give you hope and/or confidence of getting accreditation reinstated? After their plan is disclosed, please come back and give your thoughts as to if you think it will be effective.

Yes, I do plan to attend. I wonder why the meeting shedule is not heavily advertised considering the state of disarray we are in at this time. Also, seems like the meeting location changes all the time too. Are they intentionally trying to throw everyone off?
My confidence level is near zero right now due to the fact that Thompson is still there.

This school board needs to work with SACS - whatever it takes - to get our childern the Accreditation they so deserve. If SACS tells them to recite the Lord’s Prayer while hopping on one foot, I expect them to do it. The “ME” attitude that permeated the old board has to be eliminated - egos have to be put to the side for the sake of our kids.
Most of us have already seen the MAJOR headache we have on the new BOE, Michael King, the supposed lawyer, and known Lee Scott flunky, bears watching. We cannot put up with anymore self-serving (Lee Scott serving) grandstanding on his part. Sonny keep you pen ready to kick another person off the Clayton BOE.

Maggie Martínez Qualifies To Run for School Board, District One Seat Hampton,GA- Educator and community activist Maggie Martinez has qualified to run for office for the school board seat for District 1. “Today is a new day in Georgia and we are going to bring about diversity to the school board and a wealth of experience to gain back our accreditation for the Clayton County school system”, Martínez said.
With a dozen candidates vying for the District 1 seat, Martínez says, “I am pleased to see that 12 candidates are running for this position, and are willing to bring their talent and experience to the school system. Certainly, only one will be elected but we can not loose perspective that all this candidates can also help even if they don’t get elected”.
After the November 4th General Election, Martinez says she will work to bring all these leaders together in a roundtable discussion to determine how can everyone can work together to help the students, parents, teachers, and principals regain accreditation.
Many may already know Martinez through her community involvement, but she extends an open invitation for residents in District 1, and across Clayton County to come out and meet her one-on-one this weekend. “I will be at Dollar Queen at 11139 Tara Boulevard (besides Publix) on Saturday, September 20th, 2008 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. to meet and greet parents, students, and community stakeholders and to answer questions and concerns about accreditation and the No Child Left Behind Act.” Everyone is invited to attend. Martinez will also talk about how this community must work together to comply with SAC’s mandates for re-gaining accreditation.

King is not the only one that needs to be watched.
Trinia Garrett doesn’t know WHAT’s going on most of the time. Alieka Anderson needs to be removed as temporary chair IMMEDIATELY. Both of these women, along with Goree, are enamoured with Thompson and don’t understand he is part of the problem. I sure hope the other 3 who will be joining tonight are not enamoured with Thompson as well.
I’ll be at the meeting, but my expectations are very low.

I do not care what the new BOE has to do to attain accreditation. Apparently the old BOE could not understand the 9 mandates. If SACS has to train all of these new people and has to attend every meeting and has to led them by the hand. Michael King is going to ask his colleagues tonight to terminate superintendent John Thompson. I fully support him and am glad to finally see him do something worthwhile. Thompson need to go. I hope the other Board members see the mistake of hiring him.
All talk, no do (as was the case in losing our accreditation). He took no initiative or had the smarts to see that it’s not what you tell SACS, it’s what you SHOW SACS. Anybody with an ounce of brains and cares about performance would know this. He’s nothing but all dressed up with nowhere to go.

Sorry - but that is not a good move. Primarily because you have to buy him out - big money. The wasted time finding another superintendent is time we DO NOT have - and we do not have until next Sept. Remember the teacher contracts go out for signing in the Spring. That should be their goal. Also that would not fly well wth SACs - trying to run the system without a Superintendent. Put Thompson to work and make him earn his money.

Michael King is self serving and obviously this is a grandstand move . He’s knows he has been looking completely like a hole surrounded by a sphincter muscle. You can best believe that someone has been advising him on his past asinine moves on the school board. Its blatantly clear that he doesn’t know what he is doing.
While I agree that we need to get another Supt. in place for him to jump the gun like this another non thought out idea. If King were smart you would wait for everyone to get sworn in and meet with SACS first to make sure what the best way to go about getting a new Supt. in place while still meeting the remaining 8 mandates.
On another note I want to know when there will be a forum/debate with the District 1 candidates. We have 11 candidates running as one has dropped out and I am very concerned who will be seated for our district. Personally I already see some candidates blowing smoke up the behinds of voters and I want to put them in the hot seat and answer some tough questions.

Black Rain,
I disagree. Why would anyone still want him to run this school system after seeing what he’s done and giving him an adequate chance to earn his money already. Your point about running out of time is correct. We have no more time for him. We’ll still have an interim. He isn’t the only choice. If Thompson stays, his leverage of becoming permanent becomes greater as Sept. approaches and what does that do for us? It puts us further in the hole. Just look at his track record. Pay now or pay later - and if it’s later, the debt is much much heavier with a loss of accred. for three years potentially included. His contract has to be restructured, he’s already considered as someone who can’t do the job. We’ve seen what he has to offer. I could have done what he has.
Put a capable interim in place and start the natonal search now. Any transition team will be able to pick up where he left off. There are plenty locally who are capable and would still provide a much greater ROI.
The payout for him isn’t the important thing here. Most times you have to invest upfront to get your return. Our last board made a huge mistake. We’re now having to deal with it but it would be a much bigger mistake and more costly to keep him on.

Looks like they could get out of Thompson’s contract since it was not voted on legally. No pay for no performance, either.
We don’t accept “I didn’t know” from our schoolchildren. How can we accept it from our “Savior” superintendent? That has to be the most embarrasingly stupid excuse ever!

Thompson couldn’t have saved accreditation if he’d have turned himself WHITE. The county’s whites had STACKED THE DECK against him and the former all black school board. Elgart had to take accreditation. The white folk in Clayton had bought and paid for Accreditation Removal.
The stage was set back in March 08, when Sonny and the Legislature approved Legislation to “Remove Board Members if a School System Loose accreditation. You, white Claytonites couldn’t get the blacks to RECALLED or get the other board members to RESIGN. There was nothing Thompson could do!
Now, Elgart have to give accreditation back SOON the FEDS are watching this FATALLY FLAWED act of discrimination and BLATANT violation of No child Left Behind Act of 2001. All the talk about firing John Thompson at this time is exactly why we do not have accreditation. Someone please stop and look at the big picture. Everytime leadership is unstable, acceditation is jeopardize.
When Nedra Ware and the other witches drove out Dan Caldwell, Clayton was left without stable leadership. We were placed on probation by SACS. When Norrese Haynes and his witch hunt drove out Pulliam, we lost accreditation.
I suspect the same thing will happen again when we drive out the next superintendent. The board of education needs to understand that their 3 primary responsiblities are 1) budget 2) working with the superintendent and 3) creating policy for the school district.
Interim Superintendents in Clayton equals a dysfunctional board. I vote no for another weak interim superintendent like Gloria Duncan.
Michael KING is another Nedra Ware and Norrese Haynes. He believes in his own grandstanding opposed to working together to save accreditation.
MR. KING, we need you to SHUT UP, stop doing interviews and work to get this accreditation back.

I caught a portion of the meeting last night, only the part that I was interested in, namely the run-down of the action plan. It is obvious to me that regaining our accreditation will take time, but I am still confident and hopeful. I feel as if last night was a very big step toward progress. However, I am on the fence about Thompson. Even though, he was very expensive and so far has delivered a poor showing, terminating his contract could be costly and replacing him with a satisfactory candidate could take too much time. We will not get accreditation back in 2009 without a permanent superintendent with an appropriate contract.

Michael King is starting out bad. He wants to bring Gloria Duncan in as intermim superintendent until we can find a replacement. Why do we need to do that. If you want a new superintendent, then go on the hunt and find one. We don’t need anyone from the old era back here. Either you keep what you got or at least keep him until a new permanent replacement can be found. I for one doe not want to see Gloria Duncan or any of the old establishment back here. The number one job for the superintendent and this board is ACCREDITATION. All this pi$$-poor B.S. about getting rid of Thompson and giving The Buffoon, Mr. King a chance, is ridiculous. Work on the accreditation for my kids and all the 50000 kids in the county system, nothing else. Play your stupid a$$ political games somewhere else in an arena that does not involve those who cannot vote for their own future.
And John Trotter - at least your late day posts are beginning to show your psyche’ - Great White Hope - K.I.S.S. If the voters only knew what you and Lee Scott really thought of them - you both would be tarred and feathered. I guess - in the hood - that’s —- well —- it would not be pretty.
You gotta remember that when Thompson came in - nobody in responsible positions were acting like adults. The board can now modify the contract and go forward to gain accreditation first and work on a future superintendent second. The work for accreditation has to be done by local officials - much of the search process for a replacement new superintendent is contracted to a outside entity. Start both.

I am not an ignorant parent. I thoroughly explained my point. Terminating his contract before we find a replacement could cost the county time and money. I am pulling to save accreditation in time for this year’s graduates to have accredited diplomas. If we do not have a permanent superintendent with an appropriate contract in place by Sept 2009 then accreditation will not be reinstated, the school system will have to reapply, and the system’s graduates will have unaccredited diplomas for the next three years. By my math, (please correct me if I’m wrong) Thompson’s current 14-month contract will end in July 2009. We do not have to rush this.
Also, about the teachers, I could be wrong again, but I thought that I heard Dr. Sims say last night that the faculty was supportive of Dr. Thompson.
And, before anyone attacks me and accuses me of supporting Thompson, let me just say that all I am trying to do is plot out the quickest and most painless course to regaining accreditation which is the same thing the board members are trying to determine. Let’s stay objective at this point and not rush to decisions.
Oh, and BTW, Jessie Gorree is moving to keep him because she is a Trotter-ite!

I don’t think Thompson can get the job done. This man is not worth the money and not qualified to save a school district in trouble. Below is mandate 9 from the SACS report and you tell me if that describe Thompson..
Additionally, it is critical that the school district, its Board of Education, and the community support and build collaborative relationships with the new superintendent, his or her staff,
and other stakeholders. The school district must conduct a legitimate, professional search that results in securing the services of the best available candidate as the next superintendent of schools for Clayton County.

Restructure Thompson’s contract to relinquish power but keep him as interim. Begin a national search for a permanent NOW regardless.
The entire hiring process of Thompson was NOT legitimate and continues to haunt this District. At a minimum, he needs to go through the process again and be hired accordingly. Ammending his contract only adds to the problems if it wasn’t done correctly in the first place. If, when interviewing he’s the best candidate…fine. If not, we hire the new one. Everything about Thompson’s hiring is questionnable and no matter what is done, it’s still shady unless we start from a clean slate. But I have a feeling there will be a few more qualified who apply this time around with the new board we have and new community leadership.

How did Dr. Sims determine the faculty is supportive of Dr. Thompson?
Even though Dr. Thompson makes me happy when thinking of his leaving, getting rid of him would mean more trouble for CCPS. We saw the problems this past year trying to attract qualified people to the position. It would just be more difficult if we get rid of Thompson before the end of his contract. We need to look ahead at how best to position ourselves to get back SACS and then to move on from there with new leadership.
Stupidity like that being proposed by Mr. King is what got us in trouble in the first place. Make CCPS a place qualified people want to come to for more than just the pay.

I agree with Huh? and MojoMist. I don’t like Thompson anymore than anyone else, but I don’t think we need to be hasty about his termination. All the options need to be weighed carefully before that decision is made. That is why I am glad that none of the other board members were ready to make the call on that. Thompson will be submitting to them a proposal for modifications to his contract next week. If he cares as much as he claims to then the changes he proposes will be appropriate and reasonable. Let him stay on until he can be replaced. If he refuses to cooperate with the board in amending his contract, then terminate immediately, but let’s all work together to find a solution. The board hasn’t even been fully trained to the state’s standards yet.

Appoint a permanent white superintendent with the experience and expertise to lead the black school district and establish the proper conditions for effectiveness. The first step to renewal and transformation of the school district is securing the proper white leadership.
It is imperative that the white community is satisfied, staff, and Board of Education aggressively and appropriately seek and secure the service of a qualified and capable born and reared in Georgia white superintendent of schools.
Additionally, it is critical that the school district, its Board of Education, and the community support and build collaborative relationships with the new white superintendent, his or her staff, and other white stakeholders, business owners.

We just need a qualified person that knows the laws for superintendent, and that cares about our childrens education without ego. We should have looked here in the first place.
I don’t know why the school board went looking for a reject way up north.
Right now, we have to keep quiet and save our children. This county is in such a mess and, we need help from all our elected officials to get back on track.
Let’s elect the right board members and the right Sheriff. This is a big part of helping the county grow. Do the right thing and elect most qualified. Most of all, check out the background of these people before we vote them in. Yall can say think color if you want, we will have another 4 years of what we had if you don’t educate yourselves. I am still checking out one particular guy for Sheriff Kem. His background is crooked and I am not pleased with his past performance. Lies and dirt. Do your own homework!!!!

I can’t sign on to give-em-the-boot but, I saw the stuff about Rainwater. You guys are dogs. I know this is Kem’s lap dogs doing this. I also have a copy of his file from the sheriff office Kem you know you are the biggest of liars. I live in your neighborhood and am not voting for you. You ain’t all that.
You need to tell you supporters what really happened at the sheriff office so they can deciede whether they want to be embrassed with you when the truth come out. Kem, I had no idea you were such a dog. I think you are putting all that mess out to cover up your adultry and lies. Yea, by the way what is this mess other race and you are llooking for black votes? Count me out.

Just observant, Black Rain. Although I’m new to the spectator sport of Clayton politics (heaven knows, the smart ones have declined to enter that arena as a participant, me included) there have been some very obvious patterns emerge.
“Black grandstanders” like Michael King, who feed on the vitriol perpetuated by the likes of Glenn Dowell (I wonder if his degree is fake too) have become a permanent fixture on the scene. If it wasn’t King, it would be somebody else.
On the blog, we’re frequently treated to the eloquent and inciting prose of one John Trotter (aka attn Clayton parents, King of the Asterisk) which I actually find entertaining and informative at times. I honestly believe that he has inflicted the damage that he the ability to inflict and now his game is to just toss a verbal “Molotov cocktail” here and there. Methinks you give him too much credit for influence that he really doesn’t have.
And of course our willing media - namely the AJC - which never shrinks from an opportunity to cast aspersions at good ol’ Clayton County, the whipping boy of metro Atlanta.
Again, I ask, who will lead all of us - black, white, yellow and brown; male, female, young and old - with vision and confidence? What type of person or persons will be the one(s) to begin the healing process, unify all factions, and create a vision that we can believe in and stand behind?
I’m anxious to see who will emerge from this CCBOE mess with that “mantle” and really affect substantive change. From the first mention of his name, to this day, I simply do not believe that John Thompson is the one. His term should end with the current contract and in the meantime, a search for a permanent replacement be initiated.

HEADACHE MASTER - aka Dr. Glenn Dowell - It is exactly your racist diatribe that will keep people from voting for Obama. If, once in a while, someone new comes on this blog, as you and Dr. Trotter seem to think, then surely you will turn them off with the garbage you spew forth, and a mention of Obama from you could finish him in Clayton County! Think before you speak, sir. Your ignorance is showing.

The white folk in Clayton had bought and paid for Accreditation Removal. The stage was set back in March 08, when Sonny and the Legislature approved Legislation to “Remove Board Members if a School System Loose accreditation. There was nothing Thompson could do! Now, Elgart have to give accreditation back SOON the FEDS are watching this FATALLY FLAWED act of discrimination and BLATANT violation of No child Left Behind Act of 2001.
We Blacks know the real deal. We don’t have to attend every board meeting to know what you’re whites up to; we’ve lived it all our lives, of course you have knuckle negroes who believe everything white folks say in the newspaper and on TV!!

Even the so-called Most Religious White Boys are Lying Crooked Thieves—for instance the Saddleback Church White Boy came on NATIONAL-WORLD TV and told the WORLD that John McCain was in a Sound Proof room while he questioned Obama!
He LIED!! A Presidential Candidate John McCain—said believe me I didn’t hear or see a thing—Yah Right, Everyone knows he’s a LIAR—he cheating on his 1st wife lying for well over 9 months.
Another example of a LYING White Man—President Bush stood on his high horse and told the WORLD that Iraq had WMD’s, then he figured he looked too White doing it—then he employed an UNCLE TOM to bail him out—-
Bush had Colin Powell go in front of the UNITED NATIONS and LIE to the World. Look-a-here White Boy, I’m tried of telling You about Yourself—and I see your Head turning Fire RED. Go try to feed someone else that chick crap you were speaking on earlier—I DON’T BUY IT!!!!!

Kimberly, have you noticed that most of the sane people have quit posting here. This “person” has turned your column into a joke. Catlady, there was quite a large turnout at the meeting. The crowd spilled over into the lobby and that was standing room only.

PHJ - I will talk to my editor about having these posts removed & watching out for them in the future.
Any blogger who is offended by any post I urge you to use the COMMENT REMOVAL REQUEST section in the upper left hand corner of this blog, just above the “Access Atlanta Blogs” area.
I can tell my editors all day long that people are complaining about these types of posts, but it will be taken more seriously if they hear directly from YOU as readers/bloggers that you don’t like them and find them offensive.
I do hope that the sane posters will continue to visit and contribute to this blog, and I appreciate & thank those who come here with intelligent dialogue, thoughts and ideas which is what we need most in Clayton.
We’ve already got more than enough of the racist b.s. being spewed (on and off of this blog) from blacks and whites and don’t need any more which is not part of the solution but part of the problem in Clayton County on so many levels.
Catlady - It was a very large turnout, the board room was filled to capacity & I understand it holds 250 people. There were at least 100 people (standing room only) in the lobby watching the meeting unfold on a closed circuit TV set.
It was great to see all those people show up for the meeting, I just hope we can continue to show up to do what is necessary to retain accreditation.
Hope you all have a blessed weekend.

personally I just figured that Migraine Man had ran out of fingers and toes to count on. Or hadn’t been at the board meeting. I was there and not only was the lower part of the boardroom totally filled. BUT So was the balcony. And the lobby was so filled at one time that you could not walk through to get to the bathroom. And from what I could see and hear about 99 percent of the people there did not appreciate Mr King’s grandstanding and antics. I agree with the fact that he is not required by law to say the pledge of allegiance, but it does make one wonder about him. He did not attend the executive meeting before the regular meeting Just sat up there like a lump. Was busy doing his own thing and not paying attention to what SACS or the other board members were saying.Making illegal nominations. Not to mention making very foolish sounding questions. In SPITE of him I found the meeting informative and came away with a positive feeling

Kimberly,
It just goes to show that there are still people within our own race that will continue to call any progressive African American an Uncle Tom. I have been looked down upon and discriminated against, but I will not allow those brief moments in my life to change my character.
I actually believe that the person “vomiting” this distasteful racist information has either a person agenda or really needs therapeutic assistance. And if they truly are an African American, then this person should have shame on them.

The late day posters on this blog have are not to be confused with the regular Clayton folks - black or white. They are the product of two well-known racists, one white(JOHN TROTTER) and one black(GLEN DOWELL). These two and their hateful diatribes were set aside by the voters in this county.
On a separate note - if only we can find a way to remove the supposed lawyer Michael King from the BOE. NO, wait - the good ladies on the BOE might get fed up and take care of that problem themselves.

Anyone with some sense would totally dismiss the after hours rantings of whoever is making those posts. Notice how they never come on the blog during business hours when most of us are posting? Because they don’t want to hear any common sense they just want to talk their trash.
Ignore them, they aren’t worth the trouble.
I was at the meeting as well. there were a lot of people there lets just pray they continue to be interested in what’s going on and support the system in other ways like action within trheir schools and not just running off at the mouth.

This is sickening!
Why all the uncle tom, white, black BS? The power of progression is in your hands. Are you looking for someone to come in and save Clayton County? If so, Keep on waiting! Or, will you do your part to improve Clayton County? Any little thing will help. I urge you to stop the madness on this blog and return to some sort of sanity! There are many organizations in this county to keep everyone busy. The Concerned Citizens Coalition, The CCWHOA, C4, The Ministers Alliance, and a host of non-profit organizations that need good people. Get in the game to improve Clayton County. Momentum for change starts at the grassroots level! It is so counterproductive to spew forth hate, venom and mis truths about those who are engaged to wake the citizens up and fight apathy.

Kimberly, I have followed your suggestion. We all know these posts are from one or two people. They were former class clowns who grew up to be another type of clown. I enjoy your column and the meaningful comments, even when I don’t agree with the poster. Keep up the good work and I will keep requesting to have these comments removed. Maybe they will get tired and go away one of these days. We shouldn’t have to tolerate this blather.

I really don’t think these horribly worded rants and raves can be attributed to John Trotter. Although he is guilty of a vendetta with Clayton County, the man can write and this person or these persons lack that ability. They seem much more characteristic of someone who has been more recently hurt by the system-Sandra Scott(who teaches in Dekalb county, how scary!) or Noreese Haynes a student of U of Phoenix. Now I really shouldn’t cast dispersions on Dekalb County or University of Phoenix but, having observed both of these individuals in person and on video, they could just be the culprits on the blog. I do wish there were more thinking people here to debate the issues and really respond to what Kimberly proposes each Monday morning. I wonder what next week will bring?

You people come this forum and spew crap, but when spew crap into the fan it always blow back in your face. Then you get mad and complaint to Kimberly. Get Real and grow up, if you can serve it up you should be able to take it. You folks can say what you want and dip and dab in MENIAL details about nothing like you’re making sense about what’s going on in Clayton County. The matter in Clayton County is as clear as black and white, it’s OK for wealth few to dictate who and how county government is run, disfranchise voters.
Run smear campaigns on some and praise others; only to stop praising and turn praise to another JUST because of color and RACE, (like in the case of Sheriff; you go Kem over Victor, then Rainwater over Kem). You county crier are just mad when I come late and TELL you about yourselves. However, I know the deal with you—you mirror America, afraid to talk about RACE; can’t you tell Obama tried to you and America to talk about RACE but you refuse. So, you HIDE behind this forum and spew what you consider convert racism or code words, however, I see you coming. Our problem with me is I reduced or delete in its entirety all the rhetoric and small talk and hit you with the truth. I will continue to do what I do!

There is a way to stop Trotter, Dowell, Powell, and Haynes from spewing there venom here. Write the AJC and demand the newspaper moderate this forum, and approve posts here before they are posted or boycott the paper if they refuse. Its the only way to silence the above idiots, and loosers.
