Can Clayton lure new businesses?
A few new businesses are trickling into Clayton County. At a time when much of the attention is focusing on problems in the school system, it’s refreshing to learn new jobs are being created. Read my latest blog entry on Wordpress

State takeover of the Clayton BOE?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The newly formed “Lovejoy of Clayton For Accreditation” is a group of residents taking this fight into their own hands, and all the way to the Capitol.
“The last time we were put on probation by SACS, it was related to academics. This time, it is administrative. Leave the children out of it, they are not political ploys,” says Lovejoy City Council Member and co-organizer Marci Fluellyn. “This is an adult problem and adults need to fix it.”
LCFA would like Gov. Sonny Perdue to intervene and allow the State to take control of the Clayton County Board of Education until a full board has been elected and properly trained.
“The goal we have is for the State to step in, run the board while they are being trained and when they are capable of handling it themselves, turn it back over to them,” says Fluellyn. “In the meantime, give us our accreditation back and handle administrative issues in an administrative way.
On September 9 at 7 p.m., an open forum and Q&A will be held at the Lovejoy Community Center (11622 Hastings Bridge Road, Hampton) with Dr. Judith Simmons, Deputy Superintendent; Derrick Manning, Assistant Superintendent of High Schools; and Dr. Anthony Smith, Chief Academic Officer, who will provide facts regarding our children’s academic future. Corrective Superintendent John Thompson will also be in attendance to meet with parents and answer questions. Residents will meet immediately afterwards to decide what the next move will be.
“That is one thing we want to do differently than other groups, strategically make plans for other actions that will put us closer to our goal,” adds Fluellyn. “We will keep striking while this iron is hot.”
LCFA asks Clayton residents to demand that Gov. Perdue remain involved with our accreditation fight, and continue putting pressure on all legislators and school administrators to successfully resolve all nine SACS mandates by emailing Gov. Perdue or writing: Governor Perdue c/o Heather Teilhet, Director of Public Affairs, The Office of the Governor, State of Georgia, 203 State Capitol, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. Check the Lovejoy website for LCFA updates and information about an upcoming rally to save accreditation on the Capitol steps.
Will you support a state takeover of the CCBOE? Why or why not?

Yes! The newly seated school board is already having illegal meetings that fly in the face of what they are supposed to be doing. I would welcome the Governor coming in and taking control ASAP!
Our board members just don’t get it. They need to go and take Thompson with them.

I agree they need to come in until an entire nboard has been elected and seated. While they are there maybe they can pry the reins out of our less than esteemed superintendent’s stupid little hands. I get the feeling he told those poor fools that it was OK to close the meeting the other day.

Quorum - the majority of a number in a group.
The BOE was told in the past, they needed 5 members present for a quorum. For some reason they did not see the correlation to 9 total members. 5 is a majority in relation to 9 and also 8. 4 is a majority of 7 and 6. 3 is a majority of 5 and 4. 2 is a majority of 3. Since the board only had 4 real members, 3 members present, formulate a quorum.
On a separate note - the closed door meeting was still illegal.
Gov. Perdue – shame on you for being afraid to act six months ago and take over the Clayton system to save accreditation on behalf of the students in Clayton County. You like most old Democrats are too afraid of being called a racist by local black politicians to stand against corruption and incompetence — instead the parents of the 75% black student majority of Clayton should be screaming racism in your decisions to put the least of these (the children) at the bottom for your list of concerns. Let’s see – either stand up and do what is right by 45000 black students – or grovel at the feet of a dozen corrupt black politicians. You should be on the same train as the ego-morons on the last school board. And while you are leaving – take Lee, Jewel, Victor, Dowell, Bray, Griswell and Trotter with you.
Before you leave - do what is right now, put the state in charge of Clayton BOE.

Yes!!!! I totally agree that the Governor should take over the board until the new members are elected and trained. It seems like the Governor does not care about the kids in Clayton County, the state should have taken over the County school system when this whole thing started.

YES! We need some serious stability. The State stepping in would give us that until the new board is completely filled and trained. We cannot afford for this to not happen.
Thompson needs to go now as well so this would also allow time to recruit for a new superintendent.

I sincerely hope that Gov. Perdue will provide the support needed. It is unfortunate our children have to suffer for the selfish, self-centered acts of stupidity by the school board. They are all “legends in their own minds” and did not have our childrens best academic interest in mind. I am hoping there will be dialogue on what options parents have to send our children to other counties to pursue their educations.

I am a firm believer that less governmental intervention is a good thing. Having said that, I would not oppose a short term takeover by Sonny et.al. if there is a definite timetable for withdrawal. That timetable needs to be long enough that local governance can be installed and trained, but short enough that the citizens of this county will understand that this is a priority issue. I do not wish for a long term occupation of this county by the state.

As one of only two people who showed up on Friday to attend the meeting where school board appointments were going to be discussed, I must say I am very disappointed in the citizens of Clayton County. I do not have children and I was there, yet it was not important enough to the “angry” parents to attend.
Instead of using the channels we have available to us to resolve the situation (which was created by the elected officials), there is talk of marches, protests, and appeals to SACS. While I am dismayed that the behavior of our school board created a situation where SACS had to follow through with the most harsh punishment available, it was the right thing for the organization to do.
If you want to march, march in front of the school board’s meetings; protest the secretive actions of the current board and its advisors by attempting to attend the meetings, even if they turn you away; let the “leaders” know that you will hold them accountable. Work for change at the levels where it is most readily available. We have many seats on our school board that now need to be filled. The public should have input into the process of appointment of board members and the training of the body (even if it is simply allowing the public to attend to verify the board is upholding its duties).
With that said, I am seriously concerned by the apathy which exists within our voting public. I am in favor of vigorously working for creative solutions that will resolve the problem, but we must be proactive at all levels, not just the one where we have the least responsiblities.
The previous board thumbed its nose at the public, and at the state-provided assistance it was given, which was intended to prevent this problem. After refusing the help we were previously given, we are now calling for the state to come in and fix everything. Just months ago our board saw fit to run off the help it was given. Where were the marches, the protests, the letters of dismay to the governor seeking the board’s removal?
I would like to see changes to the law that enable the taxpayers to act more swiftly to remove local elected officials whose actions are jeopardizing their taxpayers. Because of the actions of the school board, all homeowners and property owners lost value overnight. For property owners who do not live in the district where their property is located, what redress to they have?
By WTF?
September 2, 2008 11:02 AM | Link to this
Sherrie I agree with you on all points except one. I don’t care about the “homeowners” who own property in Clayton but do not live here. They are probably renting to unsavory tenants who are adding to Clayton’s problems. If those homeowners cared at all, they would live here or show up at these meetings, etc. to fight for their property values, but they aren’t around either so forget them.
I am more concerned about the homeowners and decent people who actually live in Clayton on a day to day basis.
On that note I will say that CCPS does a HORRIBLE job of keeping the public informed about meetings. Many times I found out about meetings after the fact. If I hear about them beforehand it is through this blog or some other website. CCPS does not want the public to have input, how can we find out when and where these meetings will take place before they happen?

WTF:
What about the business owners? The ones who have business property outside of their district? They provide jobs for the county and its residents, but cannot vote for issues that directly affect them.
Also, as far as homeowners who rent their properties, you lump them all into one group and assume the worst.
I agree with you about the poor communication from CCPS to the public. However, the meeting on Friday was announced in the AJC online (how I heard about it) and made Fox 5 news (you can see the clip that ran prior to the meeting on their website).

Great. We’ll get officials from the state with a 47th ranking in SAT scores to take over. And I’m sure there will be no politics involved with Kathy Cox. (Evolution? We don’t need no “evolution” in a science curriculum. That’s one of them words fornicators use)
How about Sonny appoint some officials from another state?
By WTF?
September 2, 2008 11:35 AM | Link to this
Sherrie, I did not see either, will pay more attention in the future for online meeting notices, thank you.
Wasn’t talking about the business owners at all, but I do agree with you on that note.
Unfortunately, I have enough rental properties in my neighborhood filled with rejects to be able to lump them all into one category. Most rental properties in my area (those that are filled anyway) are renters with children who are not bringing any value to my community, only making matters worse. So I have no sympathy for those who rent their property and live elsewhere because they aren’t living what I’m living and they obviously did not care enough about this neighborhood to make sure they rented to someone who would care about their neighborhood.

We should not have to rely on any outside agency (website, newspaper, or television news) to inform us of BOE meetings. Clayton County Public School System has a a website… the BOE has a tab under that website. Meeting information should be posted there. Furthermore, they send out calling post messages for everything else, why not school board meetings?
I am all for a temporary state takeover of the school board. It puzzles me as to why the governor waited until the eleventh hour to take any action. Had those members been removed earlier, all seats could have been filled during this summer’s election.

It’s about the people of the County you should be looking to, not the Governor. It’s a local issue. This is what recalls are for.
But for those who think the Governor acted too late, think about this:
In February, he appointed two Special Liaisons to serve in an advisory role and offer guidance.
He asked for state agency assistance in three separate audits recommended by SACS.
He requested that Secretary of State Karen Handel, in her capacity as the state’s chief elections official, audit the election of the members of the Clayton County school board to ensure that such elections fully complied with Georgia law.
He signed SB 480 which allows students from schools that are accredited “currently or within the last two years” to receive the HOPE scholarship
He signed HB 1302 which puts into place an extensive code of ethics for members of the Clayton County Board of Education and established a local ethics commission to review the actions of the school board and receive ethics complaints against board members.
He proposed legislation that would have allowed the voters to remove an entire school board of a system that loses accreditation.
He referred complaints to be heard by a State Administrative judge.
That’s not enough? Clayton County has turned into a place a lot like the people of New Orleans were during Hurricane Katrina - relying on others and expecting someone to bail them out and then when it doesn’t go as expected, blaming someone else for their problems.
Did you see what happened with Gustav this time? People listened, took responsibility for themselves, did what they needed to do in a civilized manner, and lives were saved. Consider this your Katrina, Clayton County. I hope you have learned just as those in New Orleans did after the first time.

I do not think it is fair for SACS to expect so much out of the new board. This is why I am in agreement with the state taking over. The new board needs to be properly trained and organized. We lost our accreditation because the state did not intervene, most states intervene before it happens, and they keep their accreditation. This shold have been done in the first place. We should have never hired a corrective superintendent, that was not what SACS asked for, they asked for a permanent surperintendent. The board can remain, but they must be trained thoroughly, then the state shall release them when they feel they are ready.

The board members cause this problem. The Governor should have step in earlier to remove them since the citizens could not. No recall six months b4 elections and seven seats was up for re-election.

The reason why Sonny waited until after we lost accredition is the law he signed. It states the state can remove an entire school board that loses accredition. He could not remove them until we lost It. If you have a beef with that I suggest you take it up with the State Senate who wrote the law. Having said that the State needs to step in and add some temporary board members, who shall find Our less than esteemed supernatants contract illegal and declare it null and void

FYI - the State Board, to which Sonny appoints all of the members, is in SERIOUS violation of the Georgia Open Meetings Act - just check it out for yourself. They have NEVER stated why they are meeting in closed/executive session, never executed affidavits, don’t post any minutes or summaries online and don’t give them out or put them online. They routinely violate the Open Meetings Act by talking about things in closed session that are not listed as an exception. So, the Gov’s liaisons are supposed to help the Clayton County Board!? Ha! And how is the Gov supposed to takeover?! With who? Who is he going to put in place? He knows NOTHING about education!

SACS doesn’t expect anything from the new board. It was the old board that it took issue with and called “fatally flawed”.
We lost our accreditation due to the actions of the old school board - not because the state did not step in. As Hurricane Clayton pointed out above, the governor did everything possible to help us with this crisis.
We all need to place the blame squarely where it belongs: The Clayton County Board of Education and in particular, the “final four” who refused to resign when SACS voted to pull our accreditation months ago.
The question now is where do we go from here? We need to get rid of that idiotic blow hard Thompson, and let the state take over. Pay his contract out and just GIVE HIM THE BOOT!

If the problems was the school board when Sonny Perdue appointed his people, then he should have removed the board members then. They were out of line then and the sure as hell was out of line when they were ousted. As parents with kids, we should be able to vote to remove them. After, it is our kids we are talking about. They look to us for protection and showing them the right way.
Again, this is another emrasssement for this county. When will the negative media stop.!!!

The one thing I’m afraid of is more of the same types of behaviors. I actually spoke to the governor one week before the removal of the final four and he was very concerned about where we would go from there. He vowed to remove the members if Judge Malihi found “just cause” and did he ever find more than enough! The governor was also concerned about an appeal- but I think that the comments in the judges report pretty much rule that out- talk about definitive and complete. And if our county pays for one whit more of the defense of those women that lied on the stand I will get really angry. No, wait, I’m already angry enough. I do think we need state intervention on some level. Obviously, we still have problems and a couple of board members will never be free of that “outside influence” you know who… My theory is that if that document of 2,000 or more pages had some guidance from people who know about SACS -and I’m not talking about Gloria Duncan or John Thompson, but someone on the level of the two people that the governor had assigned to us at one time- there would have been a huge difference in the decision.
Has anyone noticed that channel 24 does not exist anymore- and I haven’t really seen any announcements on the CCPS web site. Yes, I know that the 1st Monday and last Monday are meetings- but remember there’s no public input on that anymore- another thing we can thank Dr. John Thompson for. As painful as it will be to pay out his contract I think we would much better off without him and the people he has brought on board. Does anyone know who the new director of Human resources came from?

I think, right now, we should just focus on filling the empty board seats with the right people and getting them trained. That should take no more than six months. After that, Thompson should amend his contract to restore authority to the board. If he is not willing to do that once the new board is ready and fully trained. Then, Governor Perdue will have to take action. Mark Elgart was very specific that Thompson’s contract prevents the board from being fully functional. Thompson needs to recognize that and be willing to make the sacrifice. If he’s not, then he doesn’t really mean it when he says that he cares about the children.

Of course by you know who you are referring to CCEA President Sid Chapman who gave money and endorsements to several incoming board members and has already had meetings with them to discuss what role he will play in shaping board policy.
But with the GAE President and a member of the GAE board of directors both ClayCo administrators, it may be more acccurate to call it the “inside influence.”

I think the focus should be on what is going to be done to get the accrediation back not what happen in the pass to get Clayton County to this point. When Mr. Thompson was hired the accrediation issue already existed and I do believe that he has the best interest of the children in mind. He has already said that he is willing to give the power that was given to him by the Board back to the Board members. It is too much complaining going on and nothing being done to resolve the issue which is the reason why Clayton County is in this situtation right now.

Michael B. King has no integrity or character, all he is worried about is how much he can get his cut of the pie at our children’s expense as he is very self serving and serves only One Master and that is Lee/Jewel Scott on their payroll.
But I have heard there might be some evidence coming soon to prove these facts about this so called School Board member Michael B. King to show that he is nothing but a Crook.
And I was told it will be given to all the News Media, as I was thinking this must be some powerful stuff.
We all know that he did try to over throw a City Government and that is in writing on his on letter head as a Attorney as I also head that was floating around.
As far as I am concerned it does not matter to me what Government that’s he was trying to over throw because he committed a criminal act of treason by Federal and State law.

What can be more “inside influence” than the fact that John Trotter and Noreese Haynes - MACE officials - were taking the poor starving 4 BOE members to dinner and discussing MACE strategies. Oh yeah - they couldn’t remember.
What can be more “inside influence” than the fact that John Trotter was given way too much access to the back rooms of the BOE building, areas for only the BOE and employees, while BOE was in session; that MACE was given free reign to use the Clayton School email system; that Trotter was having sidebars with Noreese during BOE meetings and that Noreese would leave Executive Sessions just to confer with John Trotter. But I am sure John was only giving legal opinions - tho he is not a lawyer, and that he was not instructing Lil Noreese as to how to best make advantage for him and MACE. Yeah, Right.

To moreofthesame and others who may not know:
CCPS has set aside an entire night for public input, the Thursday (last Thursday of the month) before the regularly scheduled monthly meeting (first Monday of the month unless it falls on a holiday). I, as a citizen, prefer this as it allows more citizens to speak whereas there was only 30 minutes alloted for public speakers which meant with the 3 min limit, only 10 citizens would be allowed to speak. The new format allows as many people who sign up to speak. Additionally, it allows the Board an opportunity to respond or have district staff address any issues/concerns before the next meeting. I believe there are staff members present at the public comment meetings to write down names, contact information and the specific issue so that a response can be sent to them. Previously this was not done. So to that aspect I think it is a good thing as you at least get some type of response.
Also, per district, personnel, Channel 24 is out due to damage from a lightning strike last week. I found this out by calling, as it was not on the website as you stated.
I have mixed emotions about the State of Georgia taking over the system, as the State DOE is not doing a good job statewide in my opinion. I just pray that our community come together as one to be a part of the solution instead of sitting idly and only complaining.

What could be more inside than having dinner with John Trotter? Let us count the ways.
Try Ericka Davis and Yolanda Everett violating board policy by attempting to put CCEA President Sid Chapman’s attempt to abolish the teacher’s right to remove disruptive students on a board agenda ahead of the Teachers’ Bill of Rights. (A proposal, that unlike Sid’s had gone through the legal process of being approved by a subcommitee for inclusion into the agenda)
What else could be more inside? Try Ericka Davis using a government computer to email Sid when the heat from the land deal and other misgivings got too hot and saying “Sid, it’s time for you to field a new slate of candidates.” (This email has been featured on several websites, including this one)
What eles could be more inside? Try the GAE President and a member of the GAE board of directors both being administrators of CCEA.
What else could be more “inside”? How about Sid Chapman, thanks to a sweetheart deal between CCEA and CCPS “earning” years in the Teachers Retirement System by NOT teaching, but by sitting in a union office all day.
Does John Trotter earn years in the Teacher Retirement System by working in the MACE office? No, but Sid Chapman, because of a sweetheart deal earns his by “talking the talk” but NOT walking the walk that those who actually teach do.
And let’s not forget about GAE’s access to email, Sid’s completely unfettered access to the schools for almost an month last school year so he could recruit on teacher planning and/or instruction time, and after CCPS told SACS no more recruiting would occur on school property, forcing a couple of hundred new teachers to hear a CCEA solicitation pitch directly from Sid at Jackson Elementary School this year.
I’d say those are all pretty much textbook examples of inside influence.

My one issue with the “illegal” meeting was the presence of a representative from the Georgia School Boards Association. If this was an illegal meeting, then I would think that a representative from the GEORGIA School Boards Association, then same people who train ALL school members across the state, would have stopped the meeting from happening. I do question Michael King’s intentions. Why would you give the media something else to write about?
Regarding a previous post on the public not attending this meeting, I read this blog and others everyday (and some times many times a day), and read both the AJC and News Daily online. I did not see any mention of this meeting. Do we the public really need to attend a meeting where the remaining school board members are trying to figure out what they can or can not do for the next few months?

Why should Trotter earn anything from the teacher’s retirement system. MACE is a for profit “union”. In other words it is the way John Trotter earns his living. I wish Sid Chapman , GAE and NEA sue Trotter for slander. It is not the fault of GAE that Trotter got fired from Clayton County and could not get a job in another school system. Otherwise, we will have the new board doing the same stupid things that the old board did. On Aug. 29, Scott said she will appeal her removal. Strong could not be reached.*
The comment above from today’s Clayton News Daily was really scary! Scott will appeal her removal. I thought we were through with this. Please tell me she will not be represented by either the CCPS Staff attorney or the ringer they brought in at a really nice hourly rate who has at least a few decks of race cards to throw out. Did anyone really read the judge’s report, especially the part about Sandra Scott? ON a second note it was reported that there will be a public meeting tonight and it’s public just in case they appoint a new board member. Sounds like there’s a plan and I, for one, will be there. I don’t believe there’s an announcement about that public meeting on the CCPS website or Channel 24, oops no, that was hit by lightning this weekend. Hmm did anyone have lightning this weekend?

Thomson must have received his doctorate in Alternate Reality . So can we call him “The Wizard of Ooze”/ Or don’t look behind that curtain cuz we really didn’t lose accredition. So this part is addressed to our less than esteemed superintendent do the right thing and resign. Not that I feel he knows what the right thing is. This lady in Lovejoy must not have beem here during the probation time 6 years ago. She obviously knows nothing about that situation. If she did - she would not have made that stupid statement about the probation being about academics. It was purely administrative - meaning a problem with the BOE. Due to this glaring false statement, ya might what to check this lady’s relation to MACE.
The probation several years ago was brought about by a MACE-led voting block, that was more interested in proving they had power than in providing the students of this county what they deserve, a chance in life. Our recently deposed BOE had ths same attitude.
Seems the black BOEs of the past few years have accomplished what those same people claim the white BOEs were doing - namely the disenfranchisement of 45000 black students. Good Job, folks.

To those of you who still have your heads up your other hole, Garrett and Anderson are the ones throwing our children under the bus. They do not have a clue about procedures or policies as evidenced by their participation in this illegal meetings. King was right to report to the media. That is the only way we would know about these continued illegal meetings. Hopefully the members who take office will follow suit and not buckle to the outsied forces or the inside forces.

Ummmm…Vonnie…I guess I’ll have to be the one to break the news to you. There is no old board. Sooner has come and they are gone.
I’m beginning to believe that everyone associated with the CCPS (with the exception of teachers and students) is drinking some kind of funny kool aid. The school officials are promising that every senior will graduate next year with an accredited diploma???? Is this the same kind of promise they made about our accreditation being safe????
Their plan includes working toward reinstatement, seeking accreditation from another agency and a lawsuit????
I’m tellin ya folks…the entire school system is in serious trouble. We need to demand Thompson’s resignation, we need to fire this half-assed lawyer Julie Martin who must have the same degree in Alternate Reality as Thompson (thanks Whatever), amd we need to beg the state to come in here and make some sense out of the chaos created by the former board and Thompson.
I met a woman yesterday who has a senior and a junior in Clayton County schools. The fear and worry in that woman’s eyes broke my heart. I heard her calling school after school begging someone to allow her children to transfer. I’ve never been witness to such a tragedy that affects so many innocent victims.

What Now you are right. The Lady in Lovejoy is a totally off track. Just look at the rally she has planned. Sounds like another snow job to keep those people getting a check for as long as they can fake it! The only thing we need to hear at this point is, what the invited guests will do this time that they did not do prior to our loss of accreditation, to meet the mandates! None of that has anything to do academics.

The bottom line is there’s been too much talking, too much complaining and too little action. We need to see this crisis for what it is. We live in a county where obvious education is not valued. This is evident with the parents, school board and elected officials. The citizens of Gwinett, Cobb and Fayette counties would never stand for this type of treatment. We are what we are. I have been patient and I’ve tried to whether the storm and stay strong in my community, but in the end we’ve been sold a bill of goods and left out to dry. As the song goes “you got to know when to fold em”. I will not leave my childrens future in the hands of self serving apathetic people. If they couldn’t accomplish nine mandates in seven months, I’m sure as h-ll not going to give them another ten to do it. I am embarrassed and I am angry.

Thank you Sharon. Why should we trust this team to do anything? We must save our children and our home values. Anytime Eldrin Bell says he is going to work with Thompson (which he has been doing since Thompson got here)taxpayers need to be alarmed! The last I checked the BOC has nothing to do with the BOE. When asked in the past leading up to this fiasco Eldrin kept telling us, the BOC was seperate and apart from the BOE.

I attended several BOC meetings towards the end of 2007 when residents were literally BEGGING Eldrin Bell to get involved with the BOE mess & every time he refused saying he could not because they were separate entities. All hail Maude,
Just when we thought we’d never see anyone top Michael Phelps, Maude comes on here and sets new Olympic and world records in mouth breathing.
There’s a reason Maude, that Sid Chapman can’t sue for the alleged “slander” that, thanks to a sweetheart deal between CCEA and CCPS, he is earning years in the Teachers Retirement System by NOT teaching: You can’t sue for “slander” when you admit to the facts of the slander ON YOUR VERY OWN WEBSITE!
D’oh!
And in other news, CDC officials, in full hazmat gear have descended upon Clayton County to investigate whether or not osmosis by Maude could lead to severe cognitive defects, and perhaps explain the county’s SAT scores.
And then that Maude!

What a mess the school board has made of our schools, our property and our county. They should be held liable for their actions! Instead, the school children and property owners are paying the price for the negligence of the school board. While I am concerned for the children in the county, I too am concerned for the property owners. We as property owners have paid county taxes for many years only to have our property lose it’s value. The housing market has already taken a big hit, and now the school board has ensured that Clayton County housing market takes an even bigger hit! I for one, would like to see the school board and it’s past members be held responsible for this mess and not it’s residents! Our county needs to be restored to what it once was…

Thanks for the notice Mr Okeeffe, but I’m done with Thompson. Until he change his contract there is nothing good this man can tell me. The board members should vote him out but I guess they can’t do that since he has all the power. I’m tired of people saying they care but won’t do the things to get us on track.
When I saw his name to attend the Lovejoy meeting I knew it was just another circus for this clown to perform. The state will not take over this school board as long as Thompson around.

To raja and Mojo Mist The board needs a quorum to vote on amending Thompson’s contract. I have been told that they will do that as soon as they have a quorum. I have talked to two of the current board members and one potential appointee regarding the contract and they all have said that will be their first order of business once a quorum is achieved .

Thank you, Mr. O’keefe, for that information. It is certainly good to know that it is the first order of business, and it is also good to know that Mr. Thompson is willing to cooperate. After I thought about it, I really felt that we were all being a bit hasty about the contract issue. I myself confronted Mr. Thompson on Thursday night about his contract, and unfortunately I allowed my emotions to get in the way of starting an open discussion about the subject. Part of the reason why I avoid meetings like that is my lack of prowess with public speaking. I hope everyone at least gives Thompson the chance to prove himself. There really wasn’t much he could do with the old school board intact. Cut him some slack, he may turn this around yet.

to By Parker Yes this is the same OKeeffe. And I was as dismayed and disappointed last Thursday as anyone. I based my support on the information I was presented with. That is all I could do. I did not know that when SACS came to interview former and current board members they would be so concerned with shifting blame away from themselves that they would by that selfish act prove the very dysfunctional status we were trying to refute. I did not know that SACS had voiced their objection to Dr. Thompson’s contract to the point that without a modification to that contract we had no chance. Had I been aware of that requirement I would have been working to assure it happened. I was also under the impression that we were only required to make substantive progress. This impression was made on the following statement I received from Dr. Elgart. “What has been stated is that all nine recommendations must be addressed by September 1st however if a recommendation is not fully completed the district must be able to demonstrate substantive progress towards completing the recommendation.”
I will continue to support the efforts of Clayton County Schools to reinstate and retain accreditation. I do this because I believe that every child deserves a quality education. While there is always room for improvement Clayton County Schools is what we have. And unlike others I am willing to actively work to improve it.
As far as to whom I spoke with The Board members were Ms. Anderson and Ms Garrett The potential member was Ms Goree. I don’t have contact information for Mr. King and he has not been available. However from what I understand of his stated position I believe a modification of the Superintendent’s contract will be high on his list of priorities.
I rarely post on blogs as usually I end up regretting it due to the uninformed and hatful comments that result. But I felt that this board meeting was important enough to post.

Yes, you don’t post often and this was a wonderful occasion and a timely one, although I had read the News Daily and had already made plans to attend. Just as I made plans to attend the administrative hearings as soon as the address was posted, it is very important to show solidarity or even a mix of opinions. Interestingly enough, it seems that Mr. Trotter is also concerned about an ouster for a certain superintendent. I guess he couldn’t outwardly influence the man and that’s the most positive thing I’ve heard about Dr. Thompson since he arrived.
By huh?

While I thank you Mr. O’Keefe for posting that information about the meeting (as I said before I usually find out about these meetings on blogs or Clayton websites like the boot, rarely from CCPS itself or any of its “officials”)
But I have to ask since you mentioned the “uninformed” on the blogs - you said “I did not know that SACS had voiced their objection to Dr. Thompson’s contract to the point that without a modification to that contract we had no chance.”
Where were you when SACS AND the 2 liasons appointed by Sonny Perdue said that Thompson was unqualified & should not be hired at all? The contract was the least of their problems w/Thompson.
The 2 liasons quit in part due to Thompson’s hiring. I know you are very active in the community & with CCPS, & I thank you for that. But its ironic that you call those on this blog uninformed when you didn’t even know that Thompson was deemed unacceptable from day one.
I’m just saying ….

Here we go setting up Trotter as the straw man again. I don’t know what he thinks of Thompson, but I know Dr. Trotter is in favor of giving teachers more support for discipline. But I guess by your logic we should let discipline continue to spiral totally out of control since Trotter is in favor of it.
Are we that committed to bashing Trotter that we throw our support behind a superintendent whose qualifications seem to be putting ego over students and parents, using leverage to extort an inexplicably stupid board into giving him a contract that basically said “%#@! you” to the entire county and giving him “credit” for not being quite as ignorant as the worst of the worst?
Now there’s an unqualified endorsement.

To: huh (Now there is an intelligent nom de plume) Where was I? I was getting my information from the source instead of second hand information and the blogs. (See Below)
Mr. O’Keeffe,
SACS never approved or disapproved of the corrective superintendent strategy. What has been stated is that all nine recommendations must be addressed by September 1st however if a recommendation is not fully completed the district must be able to demonstrate substantive progress towards completing the recommendation. Therefore if the search for a permanent superintendent is not completed by September 1st we would expect to see significant progress.

Huh? is dead on the mark on this one (and no don’t go smearing Huh?’s good name by saying that now makes Huh? part of the MACE camp LOL)
But it doesn’t matter what Elgart may have put in writing to cover his a$$. SACS made it crystal clear what they thought of the Thompson appointment. Yet this board (and this is one you absolutely can NOT blame the “majority GAE voting bloc” for) in an ineptitude of Biblical proportions (they must have thought the phrase read “a stupidity that surpasseth are understanding) decided to deliver a giant “#$% you!” to SACS, the governor, parents, students, teachers AND taxpayers and give Thompson a contract with powers Victor Hill could only dream of.

Last night’s BOE meeting was a mess, but I cannot blame Anderson or Garrett as they are new and are still in training. Neither has held elected office before, so you cannot hold them to the same standards as experienced politicians. They are green and it shows.
However, Micheal B. King continues to act the fool by following his own personal agenda instead of trying to assist. He was elected to help the CHILDREN, not HIMSELF!! He refused to vote several times last night. As a BOE member your voting choices are Yes, No, or to abstain. One cannot, not vote! He needs to climb down off his high horse and put the CHILDREN FIRST. Goree was another who didn’t go into Executive Session, but she didn’t camera play. She cares and it shows.
The District 4 voters made a BIG MISTAKE when they voted him in. He did nothing whatsoever at last night’s meeting, except shuck and jive for the media cameras. Clayton needs help, not some opportunist or crony trying to milk his 15 minutes of fame….

The current Board is not even trying to do things out of order. They are just new and are unfamilar with Roberts Rules of Order. However, the attorney on the board doesn’t have ignorance as an excuse. He needs to help the board, not try to torpedo them in his first week!
The main citizen concern needs to be with Micheal King and his uncoorperation. He can object by his vote, but to totally NOT participate is just wrong. Ditto for the newly posted Goree. Now is not the time to grandstand. The Board needs to work together and not add fuel to the fire by being dysfunctional now.

FYI. Be and get informed:
Someone posted this on another blog:
“It’s the same Michael King that doesn’t have a stake in the community by not having any kids in it. This is the same Michael King who said he will not sign a letter (as of this evening he said this!!) to appeal the SACS decision (this will allow Clayco to remain accredited while on appeal). So basically Mr. King is giving the parents of the 4th district the big %$^ by not giving parents options to take their kids out of an accredited school during the appeal. ”
“I heard when a parent asked King if he will sign a letter with the other board members to appeal to SACS and guess what his answer was? NO!! This man has no vested interest in the county. No kids in the school system. District 4 this is who you selected. Y’all better check into him.”

UPDATE: As per co-organizer Marci Fluellyn, please read below re: the Sept 9 LCFA meeting:
“Due to the conflict of interest regarding the agenda for the meeting including the discussion of the state taking over the board, the superintendent’s office has advised me that they will not be attending the meeting. They will however, still provide fact sheets regarding student’s options to share with the parents in attendance.”
FYI - last I heard, the fact sheets were to include a list of colleges that WILL accept students from unaccredited schools.
In addition, instead of holding a rally at the Capitol, there are plans to march/rally at the SACS offices in Decatur. Dates and times for this rally will be forthcoming at the Sept. 9 meeting.

Qualification was in April this is September. They knew they were running. They knew the job required necessary skill set to hit the ground running especially Anderson. She is an educator for God’s sake. Garrett runs a nonprofit do they have a board? Yes, they need time, but come on how much time do our children have? It does not take a rocket scientist or a year to grasp Roberts Rules of Order. Garrett and Anderson who both claim to have professional experience in meetings should not be new to Roberts Rules. Stop making excuses for them. That is why we lost our accreditation - the board and the superintendent kept making excuses and trying to explain everything away. Stop the nonsense and address the nine mandates. Just Do It. There is no need to appeal to SACS. Just answer and satisfy the mandates. What is it you bloggers do not understand? King should not sign anything. Why should he be a part of an action that will not save our accreditation.

What can we do to have Clayton County dissolved into another neighboring county? We have nothing going for us anymore as far as I can figure. We have to do something… Perdue can’t takeover until 2010 and by then all of us homeowners are screwed… equity gone forever… Bowen homes residents set to take over… As a citizen of CC since 1983 I am ready to just walk away from my house because it is not going to be worth a fraction of what I paid for it… why should I flush all my money down the drain and be responsible when no one else has to be?… just make us part of Fulton or DeKalb or Henry… whoever will have us and our tax dollars…

To the organizers of the rally:
Why would you go to the Capitol or to the SACS office to futher antagonize them? We have what SACS can provide(accreditation), so stop trying to fight an organizaiton that literally has its foot on your neck. Get a clue — they have the power. We have none. In addition to having little to no power, we have uneducated and under-educated people on the school board and running our school district. Why don’t you stage a march at the school district’s central office? Have you read the responses to the SACS mandates submitted by Thompson? Read them and you will see the responses were weak — quite weak! We met one out of nine — not eight out of nine — so why are you appealing. You didn’t come close to meeting them!!! How about showing some humiility and going back to the drawing board and developing responses that meet the mandates. You are wasting time and my tax dollars people!!!!!! By the way, hire a lawyer for the district who can read and understand the laws of this state. That would resolve half of the board’s problems!!!

Add Julie Lewis and John Thompson to your inquiry. Misfeasance: performing their duty inadequately or poorly.
How does Julie Lewis allow this confusion to continue at meetings and in closed session? How in the world is Thompson allowed to step foot in that BOE building still after meeting only ONE mandate - which by the way he had nothing to do with. He should be arrested for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the taxpayers.

To Jonesboro Resident. Thank You!
CCWHOA fought very hard to properly educate and direct the citizens prior to loss of accreditation. Throughout the process we have asked the hard questions and demanded real “evidence.” No one wanted to listen. The organization and the leadership was attacked repeatedly by the some of the same people blogging here. Perhaps now some will listen. The CCWHOA Education Committee will continue to attempt to move the larger community in the “right” direction to regain our accreditation. We will keep the public posted.

I don’t think we will win the appeal, but I think there is a good chance of turning this around by Sept 2009. We’ve got to stay positive and put the right pressure in the right places.
I don’t know what can be done about Michael King. District 4 voters were in a terrible spot. Both Mack and King were in league with Trotter, and Deverick Williams couldn’t even trouble himself to show up to the forums. Even if the entire district’s voters boycotted the election, the one who had the most family members to vote would have won.

There is no reason to attack the attorney, Lewis, she cannot control rogue, out of control board members. She is responsive to the community and works with citizens to improve policies and to better the district. As for Thompson, we need to move forward with him and support him and enable him to do his job. You idiots make me laugh everytime I revisit this story. I cannot believe you think Sonny Perdue should have anything to do with the problems YOU created. Do you really want things fixed? Here’s how, although you may not like it.
Step 1: Elect whitey/Asians to all 9 board spots.
Step 2: Allow whitey/Asians to rebuild from the ashes.
Step 3: Become an involved parent.
It’s that simple, and if you do it, you’ll have accreditation back this school year.
I am astonished that anyone would dare to point the finger at Perdue, Elgart, whitey, etc. You did this to yourselves. And you’ve got to fix it. If there are any brains left in the county at all, use them to put good people in charge of your schools. I know it may seem unpalatable to vote whitey into office, but if you love your children, you’ve got to do it.
I would hope that the state would turn its back on Clayton County. The county does not deserve help from the state. There are many taxpayers who don’t want to see their money handed over to Clayton, only to have it misspent again.

People see you for what you are - pathetic and lonely individuals - so empty inside. I am sorry that you guys hate your respective heritages so much. It is amazing the lengths you two will go to try to disrupt those parents, black and white, who are becoming involved and will mean more to the re-establishig of Clayton’s reputation - than your self-serving racists antics ever will.
Also, though she was a major part - I said nothing in my post about Sandra Scott being THE reason accreditation was lost. Facts are facts - and I only stated her election to BOE was due to so few voters getting out to vote - she won the seat even though she got fewer than a 1000 votes. This is a small fraction of the registered voters for her district.
Uninformed and apathetic voters along with opportunists like yourselves, and Lee Scott and Victor Hill and many other (vote skin color) like-minded people are THE cause of our problems in Clayton.

In case you didn’t know, is change in electoral systems to improve how public desires are expressed in election results.

I, in no way, agree with Synamon Baldwin’s opinions, but she is involved. She is the countywide PTA president, or something to that effect. The problem is the people who do get involved are uninformed and ignorant or they just intentionally want to destroy this county. Those of us with the brains to see through the politicians’ cons and manipulations, but do not have enough income to move, have to step up to the plate so that our school system isn’t run by puppets and morons. That’s why I volunteered for the school council at my daughter’s school yesterday. There is really little else that I can do, but get involved and be a presence. The SACS Decision was based on the SACS interview of PAST Board Members Eddie White, Ericka Davis and Rod Johnson. Remember, this is the CREW that started this WHOLE SACS DEBACLE, their ANGRY PAYBACK to sitting Board Members.
Read the SACS Report You’ll see! They are the one who work for the White Man who loves the Dollar. SACS, Elgart even said in the Final SACS Report that Former Four Strong Black Women were doing a FINE Job over the Last Two Month, but he was looking at the situation over the last six months. SACS Elgart, the Gov and the Five ole white men intentional threw the NEW MEMBERS into a TAILSPIN. “CALL FOR A FEDERAL PROBE”

“It is both foolish and wicked to teach the average Black man who is not well off that some wrong or injustice has been done him, and that he should hope for redress elsewhere than in Georgia.
Collecting more taxes than is absolutely necessary is legalized robbery.” “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”

Let me say this again! Ya’ll obviously can’t read! Money is like a Sixth Sense without which you cannot make a complete use of the other Five.
So you think that money is the root of all evil. Have you ever asked what and who is the root of all money? Answer: the white man. I for one agree with those Greedy Ole White Men in Clayton!
To get my hand on that 60 Million Dollar Surplus, I’d throw a Community of Negroes and their Children Under the Bus!
Blacks don’t know what to do with that kind of money anyway! Those Four Negro Gals should have submitted to the Superior Being. Make sure Ya’ll get it right!

Hi Real is Real(Read),
mojo mist, black rain and this idiotic headshaka have not read the final review from SACS, it is obvious by their comments and ignorance displayed in this blog. The CCWHOA will have a public reading of the SACS Final Review Report and it will be announced on this blog. Call 404.396.2706 for time and location.
To the other bloggers who sincerely care about our children, our home values and are seeking real solutions, keep reading Kim’s blog and do not be turned off by the likes of black rain, mojo mist and headshaka, just to name a few. They will eventually self-destruct.

Synamon,
I am the real Mojo Mist. Not sure who was posting under my name.
“The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.”
That is where I stand. It is not about individuals, it is about our communities and county as a whole. I hope you and everyone in this county sees this the same way as there is not a lot of time. If not, we will be in a much worse position on 9/1/09. It is what it is and what’s been done is done. But where we are, is today. If we only speak of what happened yesterday, we’ve done nothing today. It’s time to move forward in an effective way.

We need o stop blaming the white man for our shortcomings. The black majority school board was just plain and simple off the chain! They brought this on themselves. There are many majority black school boards all across the nation and somehow they manage to save accreditation. We voted these fools in and now they are gone. Going forward, there should never be another empty seat in at a board meeting. It’s up to us, the victims of their stupidity to hold them accountable. The CCWHOA is at least engaged! Are you engaged in anything to bring about change in this county or are you sabotaging the efforts of those who do? Were not going to agree on everything on this blog but can we at least agree to improve the conditions in this county by holding those we elect accountable? If someone does not know Roberts Rules of Order, and runs for a seat where parliamentary procedure is expected , then shame on them for getting in over their heads. If you are a candidate or have been elected, take the initiative and learn them so you can perform the job in which you were elected to do. Public service is an honor. You won’t get rich serving the public of Clayton County in 2008! The mere fact is you can’t play the game like they did a few years ago so get it out your system! The the oath seriously. Take your community seriously and take your responsibilities seriously. The bar has risen and the old standard will not cut the mustard.

Just information for those who are still asking the question….
CCWHOA = Clayton County Wide Home Owners Association
I was at a meeting where they passed around the collection plate (bag) for donations so I have seen it first hand. If you have not been to their meetings you have not missed anything! Someone needs to look into their non-profit status and where all the money collected was used. I think some interesting things will be found.
Kim - Great article and great blog session! Some dirt has been thrown and some light has even been shed. It’s great to see everyone interacting.
I would like to see some blogs from the candidates that plan to run for the vacant BOE seats. Has anyone heard who’s running for vacant district seats? Qualifying begins Wed, Sept 10th at 9 am and closes on Fri, Sept 12th at 12 in the afternoon.
