Can Clayton lure new businesses?

A few new businesses are trickling into Clayton County. At a time when much of the attention is focusing on problems in the school system, it’s refreshing to learn new jobs are being created. Read my latest blog entry on Wordpress

Will CCPS do it?

While SACS decides the fate of Clayton County Public Schools, a judge decides the fate of the four remaining board members.

Most of the board members who got us to this point in time are gone or will be by January, which should help make them less “dysfunctional” as determined by SACS. However, two remain from the old regime and recall efforts against A. Michelle Strong (District 1) and Sandra Scott (District 9) have not been abandoned.

“There was a lot of concern, but little action in both elections. We’re using that as a measure to decide if a recall will be successful or not,” says Maggie Martinez, Chairperson of the District 1 recall effort. “It would be prudent to wait on the final decision of the administrative judge and decide what to do from there. We will also factor in Michelle Strong’s decision after September 1 and the results of the special election.”

Some good news is auditors did not believe school officials intentionally falsified attendance records as SACS suspected, although there was evidence of cronyism and other unethical behavior. More good news is 91 percent of our teachers signed on for another year, and the district was able to bring in 400 new teachers despite the accreditation threat, according to the AJC.

Hopefully these things, along with several newly elected board members and 2,300 pages of evidence, will be enough.

I must congratulate students who took control of their destiny by taking part in Clayton State University’s joint enrollment program, as well as those student athletes who were able to move on. It is too bad that CCPS could lose top students, but if I were a student or their parent(s), I’d do what was in the pupil’s best interest.

Do you have children in CCPS, or did you remove your child? Do you believe this administrative hearing will be a factor in SACS decision? Do you think CCPS will keep accreditation or get probation? If you live in Districts 1 or 9, will you support a recall at this point?

Now my take on this is that the AJC and Kimberly did not allow us the opportunity to just start writing junk off the bat. I think they wanted you all to read the article, understand the article, then respond to the article. Stay on track and to the point.

And by the way, just in case you all were wondering as you start to post, no one wants to read an entire article from another news source here. Please be kind and only place the link to that article and NOT the article.

I live in District 1, and yes I support the recall of A. Michelle Strong. She has to be one of the most abrasive people I have ever had the displeasure of speaking with who held public office. You’d think she’d be just a little humble under the circumstances, but apparently not.

I am hoping against hope that this judge will do the right thing and remove them.

The people of the district put two consecute majority boards whose priority is the union they belong to…namely MACE before the children of Clayton County. SACS should remove Clayton’s status and though some will suffer in the short term, I believe many more will benefit in the long run. Unions are from a past era and exist to protect employees who cannot compete. Funny that principals have no contract, but teachers do.

Sorry to interject facts into this MACE bashfest but the majority voting bloc during the recents SACS debacle has been comprised of members of GAE not MACE.

Care to explain how this GAE majority voting bloc had the “children’s best interests” at heart when they were having secret meetings with Elgart weeks before Elgart started his so called “investigation”?

Care to explain how Elgart has the “children’s best interests” at heart when he talks about “outside influence” but clams up completely when he is presented an email from the (GAE member) board chair to Clayton County GAE president Sid Chapman that says “It’s time for you to field a new slate of candidates Sid”?

Care to explain how Elgart has the “children’s best interests” at heart when he talks about “outside influence” but clams up completely when incoming board member Mary Baker has taken contributions from former chair Ericka Davis (GAE), Sid Chapman (GAE) and then openly and brazenly admits in the media that she’s already had discussions on what “role” Sid Chapman will play in shaping board policy?

Care to explain how MACE is “the problem” given the actions of GAE members and the GAE majority voting bloc?

“Outside influence” and Dr. Trotter? You might want to concern yourselves with the inside influence of Sid Chapman. You know the one who is earning years in the Teachers’ Retirement System by not teaching, thanks to a sweetheart deal between GAE and CCPS.

Didn’t know that did you? That’s because you have fallen hook, line, and sinker for Chapman and Elgart setting up Trotter as the boogeyman.

I’m not denying anything you say Attn: Clayton Parents because I don’t have the “inside knowledge” that you apparently do.

But I can say for certain that what I’ve seen and heard of John Trotter over these past years doesn’t absolve him. He’s been worse than the “boogeyman” in some respects, has promised to destroy CCPS because he didn’t get his way & has made moves to make sure that happens, even though he lives in Fayette County and his children don’t even attend school here.

There are other threats to CCPS that’s for sure. But Trotter seems to consistently be “in the mix” re: CCPS. He is also a threat & we should never forget that. I still can’t believe 2 people associated with him were elected to the school board & p.s. - I don’t believe Anderson is one of them, it was Goree & somebody else.

Oh & to address the blog’s actual questions.

If I had a kid in CCPS, I would have made certain they were in another system by now, even if I had to use my pension monies to pay for private school. My kids are worth everything and I would not allow them to be used as test dummies for CCPS while they try to fix their problems. I feel for any parent who has no other choice but to keep their kid in CCPS.

I do believe this administrative hearing stuff will affect SACS decision, but really depends on what the decision is. If the fools (i.e. the four remaining board members) are not removed, they board will still be “fatally flawed” and “dysfunctional”.

If they are removed God willing, I think we’ll get probation.

At the risk of getting flamed, I am also one who hopes CCPS loses accreditation all together. I think this county needs a fresh slate from the bottom on up. The only way to do that is to get rid of EVERYONE currently in the system.

I live in district 1 and have been waiting with baded breath to sign a recall petition. Strong scares me and I feel for any children she teachers. Just glad she’s doing it in another county.

By yaya

August 19, 2008 5:59 PM | Link to this

At last- this link can be posted, I was wondering what was up with that?

Being able to observe, first hand, part of the hearing today was quite informative. Seeing and hearing Ms. Strong remembering items that she said in board meetings which weren’t in the minutes and not remembering when she went to dinner with John Trotter was enlightening, to say the least. I believe that’s called selective amnesia?

Of course, the Board is totally harmonious now. Is that harmony when they almost didn’t send in a response to SACS because of some of the information in the report? Was it harmony or even melody that they very nearly ditched that report?

I wish that I knew what the final outcome of this hearing will be. I wish that I could predict what the SACS committee will report after their visit and questions last week. I only hope for the best for our deserving students in this county. The students, taxpayers, homeowners did not start all of this debacle; but, we can all only hope for a suitable outcome.

Seems like poster “What!” was quickly reduced to simplistic name calling because facts and logic were simply too much for What!’s limited skill set.

Again, how is MACE “the problem” when the majority voting bloc during this entire debacle has been members of GAE, not MACE?

Of course “What!” won’t address that, because addressing that means that What! can no longer blame MACE for everything from baby’s rash to grandma’s gout.

Isn’t it odd that SACS head Mark Elgart seems so concerned about who Michelle Strong eats dinner with, but when Mary Baker takes money from Clayton County GAE president Sid Champman and then openly admits in the media that she has had discussions on “what role” Chapman will have in shaping board policy Mark Elgart seems to have no concerns whatsoever?

Does that sound like Elgart has concern “for the children” or does it sound like Elgart has concern for protecting CCEA President Sid Chapman’s personal petty fiefdom?

Y’all know Sid Chapman right? He’s the one who is earning years in the Teachers’ Retirement System by not teaching, thanks to a sweetheart deal between GAE and CCPS; a deal that Elgart seems strangely silent about for someone concerned with “outside influences”.

Outside influences? You might want to be more concerned with the inside influence of Sid Chapman and CCEA.

My testimony reads like this:

I admit it, I was the one who was working behind the scenes to get Sandra Scott’s husband that job, in a position that did not exist. That is why I was working with Erica and Rod and Gloria.

I also admit that I was receiving a “Salary” from CEP while my Exec. Director Haynes, was puching CEP onto the schools. I also admit that when I allowed Rod and Erica to bring Gloria in, I allowed Rod to bring in that disgusting person to guard her as a payback. I thought I had it all worked out.

I also admit that I was working with all of the board members behind the scenens to determine who received insurance contracts with my buddy Robby, and who received sanitation contracts with my other buddy.

and lastly, I admit that my home has 3 mortgages on it and that I am desperate enough to do all harm possible if I can only get another contract and payoff going in my direction. I know Sid doesn’t do these things, he only works with the schools and keeps his nose clean and draws his honest salary, but I will continue to try and lame blame on anyone else but myself.

Oh yeah, Sorry Virginia, Lee, Jewel, and Victurd, I was not as good as I used to be. I was not on my “A” game since my CEP deal fell through and I owe all of these “I.O.U’s”.

Always,

Johnn

RTeacher,

It may very well be that some of the points made are redundant for you. But can you guarantee that no new readers ever come to this blog?

If not, then facts and logic dictate that it can indeed be instructive to new readers of this blog to become aware of some of the dynamics that are not reported in the AJC, in their ongoing efforts to bash MACE and act as though they actually have some relevance in Clayton County.

However RTeacher, if you’d like to add something new to the debate, how about explaining how MACE is “the problem” when the majority voting bloc during this entire debacle was comprised of members of GAE?

When you’re done with that, maybe you can explain how the citizens of ClayCo should have any respect for Elgart and SACS, when Elgart whines about who Michelle Strong has dinner with, but suddenly becomes mute when CCPS officals herd hundreds of new teachers into Jackson Elementary School to hear a solicitation from GAE Clayton head Sid Chapman immediately after telling SACS officals they will no longer allow union officals to solicit new members on school grounds. (And no, this is not rumor or innuendo, this was reported in the media, which shows just how brazen Sid Chapman and the GAE officals who run CCPS-including the state GAE President and a member of the the GAE board of directors-are when it comes to ignoring the SACS mandate on limiting solititations and “outside influences”)

Let’s see, hundreds of new teachers being required to listen to a sales pitch by Sid Chapman of GAE (with MACE and PAGE officials not invited?)

At the risk of being, God forbid, “redundant” who is it ClayCo really needs to worry about; “outside influences” or the inside influence of CCEA and Sid Chapman?

PAGE met with teachers at JHS the day after CCEA met with them at JES which is across the street. Did MACE do anything for New Teacher Orientation?

Even without Accreditation, it will not effect HOPE or students getting into college. It will not effect teachers either.

All the testimony today was about MACE, which is a for profit union. So, don’t try to take a tax deduction for your dues!

Once SACS takes Accreditation, and the Governor removes the Board, the school system can return to “normal”. After all, it is not the students, staff, or teachers causing the problems.

I could really care less what age, race, creed or color those 5 people were who managed to get this board brought before a judge.

Those 5 residents were able to do what the majority of residents of this county could not - hold these fradulent board members accountable for their actions. I thank them, wish I could meet them in person so I could shake their hands & say thanks to their faces.

Bottom line - if these four board members had done the right things during their tenure, there’d be nothing anyone (white, black or otherwise) could do to them. That’s their own stupidity coming back to haunt them. I’m just thankful someone was able to get the governor to listen & that he found a way to get this in court & I pray the next step is that they are banished from the BOE.

And one more thing - these four board members KNOW they’ve done plenty of wrong to the system, the county and our kids. The one smart thing Rod Johnson did was resign before it went to a hearing so he wouldn’t have to testify. These defiant 4 should’ve followed suit & I’ll enjoy watching them implode. I mean come on, 2 of them have already been voted OUT. RESIGN!!! GO AWAY!!! BEAT IT!!! DON’T LET THE DOOR KNOB HIT YA, ETC.!!!

Thank you again to those 5 & I hope the administrative judge throws a library full of books at these four losers.

Throw a dictionary at Sandra Scott, maybe if she gets hit in the head with some knowledge she’ll learn how to talk & act in public.

Attn Clayton Parents It must have been hard for you, waiting it out through the real news between primary and run off, to get another chance to make your same, old, boring points ad nauseum. You just like to see your words in print, because as long as I’ve been on this blog, no one has ever agreed with you and nothing has changed. The bottom line is, THERE IS NO POINT TO YOUR POINT!

Sandra Scott is the poster child for the dysfunctional Clayton County BOE.

Did you hear Lois Baynes-Hunter’s pathetic snivel about how she came on the board while it was on probation and, “God willing” she’ll leave it on probation? Does she really believe that’s a good thing???

These women care more about eating than they do about the students of the CCPS. Baynes-Hunter is gorging herself on room service paid for by the taxpayer, and Scott lets Trotter pay for her supper because she’s hungry. Does she have a clue about conflict-of-interest?

These remaining 5 members are so incredibly ignorant. I can only hope that the same force for good that rid our county of Victurd and the Smuts will get rid of these goons as well.

Clayton Taxpayer,

Can you guarantee, with one hundred percent certainty, that no one new ever comes to this blog?

The points may be old to you, but there may be others reading for the first time who might not be aware of some things because the media doesn’t cover them.

And speaking of media, you say that nothing ever changes? Is Rod Johnson still a board member, or did he resign in disgrace because his wife was illegally double dipping and he KNOWINGLY hired an accused child molester?

And when did these stories hit the mainstream media and shame Johnson into resigning? Only AFTER they were repeatedly talked about in the blogsphere. So much for your talk that “nothing ever changes”.

But Clayton Taxpayer if you want to add something new to the discussion, why not offer an effective rebuttal to my points, instead of whining about the fact you’ve read them before?

Maybe because, for all your bluster, you haven’t been able to offer one. I guess some things really don’t change after all.

I’m not John Trotter; thus I’m not in a position to address the points you made in your post.

However, what you and everybody has consistently ignored in their quest to set up MACE and Dr. Trotter as the “straw man” to blame all of Clayton’s woes on is the following: How is MACE “the problem” when the majority voting bloc during this entire debacle has been members of GAE?

Bottom line is SACS or no SACS, you can’t have good learning conditions until you have good teaching conditions and you can’t have good teaching conditions unless you have support for discipline.

Tell me, since you seem to be such a fan of the status quo that MACE is trying to change, what has CCPS done to address that? (And no, central office telling school administrators to bully teachers by placing them on PDP’s when they refer fights to the office does not address discipline; it just cooks the books so the numbers look good.)

But I will say, again, that MACE & Trotter are not the only threats to CCPS.

ALL outside influences should be removed, including GAE, MACE & any teacher unions. That is probably virtually impossible unless someone makes it a rule/law that if you serve on the board of education in ANY capacity but specifically as a board member, you must cut all ties with outside organizations, especially teacher and education affiliated ones. But I doubt that will ever happen.

I will concede your point about teaching conditions. No issue here.

What you fail to see is the corruption on the school board regarding Mace members and those that have ties to Lee Scott. Mace members used their influence for Trotter; from CEP to sanitation contracts. They have got to go!!!

Trotter needs to take his non taking the bar exam, loophole master out of the county.

If you haven’t seen it already what has destroyed CCPS and Clayton County in general is GREED

GREED is what has destroyed the Clayco Board, plain ole greed. Instead of the board members viewing their positions of one of service to the community they viewed them as money machines.

We must never be afraid to go TOO far, for SUCCESS lies just beyond. Just beyond those White Folks in Clayton County trying to steal the Majority-Black Folks Money. Look at those BRAVE Ladies on the CCBOE standing up to those Clayton KLAN and Gov’s Republicans Conservative machine. Wake Up! Black Folks, do you know what conservative means, is means—White Folks have been running things a certain way for a long time—they want to Conserve those ways like they are. That means, you Black Folks will never a level playing field dealing with them. They want to Conserve old ways- those old ways that have kept you Black Folks Impoverished, Disenfranchised, Uneducated, and Disillusioned. These CCBOE members knows, It’s far better to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat. Black Folk in Clayton knows and have lived long, they have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions, even on important subjects, which they once thought right but found to be otherwise. Black Folk in Clayton knows, the common idea that success spoils people by making them vain, egotistic and self-complacent is erroneous; on the contrary it makes them, for the most part, humble, tolerant and kind. Look at the way the CCBOE is tolerating those ole KLAN.

Hi, this is addressed to ThemRealFolk, I don’t think you are concerned for the children either; because you have your own agenda and our cchildren don’t need that. By the way, I am black and proud, but I am not a racist. Actions speaks louder than words and the people who are standing up for the children are doing something about. Talk is cheap.

to ThemRealFolks why do you find it so hard to believe that a black person can actually think for themselves and not assume that every white person is racist? I’m not trying to be funny or sarcastic but - is this a southern thing? I’m seriously asking this question & anybody can answer it.

Please enlighten me as I’m not originally from these parts, I’m from the dreaded north where although it is not a perfect place & they do have racial issues, various races manage to co-exist relatively peacefully and hold various public offices & actaully do the job they were elected to do. Even if they get theirs on the side (which I believe ALL politicians do) the public doesn’t get shafted as we have here in Clayton and if someone messes up, they don’t start dealing from the bottom of the racial deck, or at least not as much as I’ve seen here in GA.

I also have to wonder what you think those “Four Black Female Cats showed those ole boys” exactly? From where I stand, those four women look more & more like liars & incompetent every time they open their mouths. & Lois Hunter sold her “sistergirl” gloria Duncan down the proverbial river by telling the court that she’s weak & couldn’t handle the job! Just Used her as a scapegoat to save her sorry butt, that’s a damn shame.

I’m sorry but playing the race card does seem like a final, last ditch desperate effort on their part & I doubt that sat well with the judge but guess time will tell.

Would you rather have a person of color in office who isn’t doing the right thing just for the sake of having a person of color in there? who does that help in the end? it didn’t seem to get us very far recently, just made this county look bad.

I’m not trying to fight or name cdall with you, I’m seriously asking these questions to understand the mentality here becaues sometimes, no most times, I just dont’ get it.

You FEW WHITE Clayton Residents, shows your prejudice everyday on the blog. Why aren’t you SILLYA$$ White Folk crying about THIS —- What amazing incompetence on the part of the State Board of Education!! How many of these bureaucrats have ever taught a class, talked to a real teacher about teaching, or even have their own children in public schools? Certainly education in Georgia needs improvement. Parents and students must take responsibility as well as teachers. But it is incomprehensible that the State Board of Education would know that such discouraging and disruptive results were assured and blithely went ahead with their pet project. Concerned Oldtimer,

Maybe you ought to step back in the classroom for a reality check; teachers are being treated with anything but respect in CCPS. Or are you saying when a student calls a teacher a B!TCH they must have deserved it because “if you act like a professional, you’ll be treated as one”?

Or do you want to pretend oldtimer that teachers are never cursed at or openly disrespected in CCPS?

And tell us oldtimer, is it a sign of “respect” when a teacher is placed on a Professional Development Plan (the first step to termination) after only the second student behavior referral for the year? Or is it yet another sign of abuse teachers at CCPS go through; first being defied and disrespected by students, then being blamed for it by administrators?

These are the kinds of things MACE fights against; the kinds of things that GAE and PAGE do nothing about, because their membership is dominated by administrators determined to put a happy face on things at all cost.

Remember the pep rally at the beginning of the year; paid for with YOUR tax dollars? Do you think that was a teacher’s idea or an administrator’s idea, once again designed to put a “happy face” on things?

If you want to live in the fantasy land that all children behave, all parents are properly raising their children, and all administrators support teachers in matters of discipline then you can say that there is no need for organizations such as MACE. But for people living in the real world MACE is the only organization that will speak honestly and forthrightly to these issues because they are the only ones who can because they don’t let the status quo (administrators) join.

Doesn’t mean that some individuals who may have been affliated with MACE haven’t fallen short (or let’s face it got drunk on their own power) once elected to the school board; but before you point fingers at an entire organization, you might want to step outside of that glass house and consider the actions of GAE members Ericka Davis (Micromanaging? Just because I send emails to CCEA President Sid Chapman saying “It’s time to field a new slate of candidates Sid” doesn’t mean I’m micromanaging) and Rod Johnson (Just because I KNOWINGLY hire an accused child molester to work for the BOE doesn’t mean I don’t have the children’s best interest at heart)

If you think the GAE majority voting bloc has acted “professionally” through this entire debacle, or had the students’ best interests at heart, you truly are living in a fantasy land. Unless you think that spending MILLIONS extra in the land deal was “for the children”. Or allowing Clayton County GAE head Sid Chapman (thanks to a sweetheart deal between GAE and CCPS) to earn years in the Teachers Retirement System by NOT teaching is somehow “for the children”.

For all the angst and consternation caused by SACS, people better wake up to the fact that once SACS has gone on its merry way, you’re still stuck with the reality that you cannot have good learning conditions until you have good teaching conditions, and that MUST include support for discipline.

Who’s talking about that these days? Nobody. Who should be talking about that? Everybody who is truly concerned about educating the students.

Yet in all their voluminous reporting of CCPS “fatally flawed” system did Mark Elgart and SACS even mention the first word about discipline? That should let you know right there how “truly concerned” they are for CCPS students.

The biggest problem in ClayCo is that people do not vote and then complain! As long as only 20% of the registered voters particpate in elections, the majority of the people will have no voice. We cannot blame one segment of the population, since only a few took the time to vote and made the decisions for the majority.

My child is still attending ClayCo schools. If you refuse to stand up for something you will fall for anything. That is what has happened with those parents that have moved their to other schools to play ball. When we retain our accreditation, these students will not be allowed to play this year. Ohhhh, so I guess they are just out of luck.

ThemRealFolks - My child had no problem whatsoever passing the CRCT. Did anyone consider at all that the testing standards were not too high, but that the curriculum being taught was not in line with the test? That is especially true with Clayton since your friend, Norreese Haynes, scrapped the curriculum planned for the 2007-2008 school year right before school started which caused the teachers to have to “wing” it (for lack of a better term). Even if Kathy Cox is to blame for the problems with the CRCT, people are entitled to make mistakes. It is when they continue to make mistakes over and over again, AND ignore their constituents, like your feline friends, that something must be done. The worst that will happen to them is they will lose their seats. Two of the four won’t be there after January, and the other two, if Judge Malihi decides in their favor, will NEVER get re-elected once their terms come to an end. Why cling to the sinking ship? Help your friends out. Advise them to resign so that they can preserve some dignity!

A comment came up yesterday at the hearings from the board attorney-if all these citizen’s of Clayton County are so concerned about doing something about these school board members where are they? So I have to wonder, how many people were aware that you could be an observer in this process. I’m glad the paper printed the address, do wish they had put Peachtree St, NW to help out the old GPS, though. It was very informative as an observer and I couldn’t help wondering what different witnesses’ motives were.

As a retired teacher with most of my years in Clayton County many feelings were released in hearing the testimony of so many individuals. With race being at the forefront yesterday I had to wonder, why? Yes, I am white and have even been called a W M F by a parent about 15 years ago, before all this board “mess” even started. I want to think that, like one of the petitioners, that I taught the child and not the color. I hope that no matter what the decision of the judge and ultimately the decision of the governor that we can just put all of this behind us and get on with the business of educating ALL students. I plead that ALL members of the board of education, both present and those to come in the next few months- please, put personal agendas and colors and bias aside and try to be honest and calm and effective and functional!

RE: BOE playing the race card … well desperate times call for desperate measures. I hope Perdue kicks them all out because unfortunately we can’t even get people around here to vote when it matters most, so I’m not convinced a recall will actually work. Unfortunately this county is very apathetic and it shows constantly.

As far as people not showing up for the hearing … if I didn’t have a job I would be there & I’ll bet there are others who feel the same way. For that lawyer to say we don’t care because we aren’t in the courtroom is a cop out and another desperate plea.

I wonder if by some miracle we do keep accreditation, if Clayton will take those atheletes back into the system because let’s face it, the system needs them for revenue purposes and plus aren’t they residents of this county and can’t be turned away? I would have done the same thing, put my child first because the powers that be in CCPS sure as hell haven’t been putting the children first.

If this county continues to be divided along racial lines, we will continue to be the laughingstock of Georgia & NOTHING good will be accomplished here.

to Share the blame personally yeah I’ll be happy when we lose accreditation, although I won’t be happy for the children who continually get the shaft from this administration. But losing accreditation will mean we’ve finally hit rock bottom and hopefully will have nowhere to go but UP.

Keeping these fools in power definitely will not benefit this county or our children either because they are only out for themselves and much of the testimony shows that. Come on, Michelle Strong talking about eating out with Trotter because it was a free meal, I know teacher don’t make that much money but come on! Sandra Scott claiming she TAUGHT anger management classes - I’ll believe that one when pigs fly! Lois Hunter saying Gloria Duncan is weak when she helped elect her to the interim supt. position. They need to go away, all of them.

Them people, themrealfolk, and powerpunk,

You are free to do and think as you feel. The problem is that if you truly feel and act the way that you portrait yourselves to be, I can assure you that you’ll be miserable and angry inside. You should really consider growing up and become educated on what really matters. Not only to you but to those around you.

I am more critical of blacks than I am of whites because, no offense, I care more about what happens to blacks. That is, I care whether we’re valuing education as highly as we should, whether we’re pushing ourselves and our children to be the best and not wallowing in excuses or hurling unfounded charges of racism. Having grown up black among black family and friends, I will admit there is an undercurrent of thinking that doesn’t have a name. Whether a person actually suffered from racial discrimination or not, there was an urge to “keep whitey on the hook”. In other words, we are never to allow whites to forget our historical grievances, whether an individual white person was guilty of discrimination or not.

My parents have taught me to take the opposite approach ever since I can remember. My advice to those who come on this AJC blog to cry and moan about slavery, institutional racism and such, I’d prefer they use it to “keep blacks on the hook.” It’s a better approach and much more interesting than telling whites how racist they are. Blacks need to be reminded, constantly, of our responsibility in this mess.

We all know, black crime statistics are outrageous, especially considering our proportion of the population. Rarely, if ever, do you hear black people expressing disgust for out-of-control crime rates or lecturing other blacks about their responsibility to stay out of the criminal justice system. Do we see black leaders denounce black on black crime? I haven’t.

Let’s perceive the void and decide to fill it. That makes a lot of blacks angry, and a few whites, too. But that can’t be helped. The beauty of living in a free country is that if you don’t like what I say or write, you can counter it with your own op-ed or blog or other form of communication. When I offer this advice to disgruntled blacks, they have an excuse at the ready. Big surprise, right? Making excuses is a reflex for many of us. How many times have we heard the powerful white benefactors have propped up so and so as to drown out the dissenters. Calling them “uncle toms”.

Whatever.

People who hate me will hate me. I can’t do anything about that. All I ask for everyone here on this blog is to examine yourselves before you start handing out excuses and pointing fingers at white folks. If you want a place to cry and moan about whites, don’t do it here.

My daughter is attending private school and my husband and I still plan to be on the first thing smoking as soon as we can sell our house. We are currently paying school taxes into a system that we cannot utilize. What a rip off! 400 new teachers hired….not impressed. Seriously, who would actually voluntarily sign up to teach in a school system in danger of having its accreditation revoked? It’s like accepting a job offer at FannieMae or Enron. The majority of Clayco’s teachers are in their first year and many hold provisional certificates. The 400 new teachers hired are probably not the cream of the crop, just folk trying to get their student loans forgiven or laid off mortgage workers who fell into teaching as a last resort.
Education standards in Georgia are subpar and Clayco is at the bottom of the heap. A lot of things must change in this county before things actually get better. The elections are just the tip of the iceberg; however, Bell is still in power. We are looking at another encroaching wave of project dwellers that will relocate here when the City of Atlanta “sprays the Raid”. All of these vacant foreclosed houses will still become Section 8 housing and the nightmare will continue. Sure, the police and DA will just lock them up and prosecute them faster but they will still move down here. This county is in dire need of an extreme makeover in order to attract quality educators and quality residents. Quality educators value their talent and the investment they’ve make to their profession. Quality educators desire employment in quality school systems with interested students, and active, interested parents. This county must attract a totally different demographic. Until that happens it won’t matter who is in office.

You sound like someone who always wanted to be a teacher but couldn’t pass the GACE. Please educate yourself before commenting on teachers. The students still have to be taught and you as a taxpayer in that county should feel lucky someone is signing up to teach the students despite what is going on with the board. Not every child can afford private school. I hate to hear people like you speak because you sound like an idiot. To teach in private school you do not even have to have any type of certification. I personally know a guy who has not even graduated from college working as a band director at a private school. I have a family member who is not certified at all working in an overpriced private school. It is not a requirement in all private schools to be certified at all. So what are you talking about? New teachers have to work too instead of downing them for taking on this task of working under this dysfunctional school board try congratulating them for taking on such a monumental task. Geesh!

Clayton County deserves to lose accreditation. First of all, they hired a “white suit wearing country bumpkin”from NC to lead a state that is already lagging behind the nation academically. Secondly, the principals in CCPS act like the teachers are the problem. They are not. By the way, where do they find their incompetent principals and so-called reading and math facilitators? They never share useful information, only what they have read in research. The nepotism in this system is unreal. The CCPS system needs a wake-up call. It is unfortunate that students, teachers, and other staff members have to suffer for the board members and the incompetent administrators.

Goandread an MAXX4955 read this:

The AJC article, An education flap in black and white by that (White Garden Tool), Maureen Downey is a prime example of Slave Master’s great-daughter looking at the World through White Colored Glasses.

In this Female KLANS eyes the White Man do no wrong. To this Lily White Klan Dixedarling; Sonny did no wrong putting the State in a 1.6 Billion Dollar hole, Kathy Cox did not wrong flaunting 66% of the State’s kids, All the Lily white Juries sentencing Blacks to Life to Death sentences only to be made a LIE by DNA.

Bush did no wrong lying to the world about WMDs and killing well over 6000 soldiers and US civilian workers, The Big Head Religious White Boy at Saddleback did no wrong Lying to the world last weekend. You white folk come out here on this blog and talk amongst and PLAY with yourself everyday.

Those Four Black Heroines of CCBOE defeated your 80something yr. old Former Slave Master (the same slave masters whom received BIG money off the FAMED Land Deal)! While Brock hires a no-so independent Audit to Cover-up for these Good ole boys. OK, I’ll stop I see your Head turning Ultra Fire RED.

Petitioner Dyane Simons, a retired Clayton middle school math teacher, told AJC reporter Megan Matteucci after the hearing: “I taught children, not color.” Yah right, old white lady; when you taught school 27 years ago, there were No Black student in Clayton County. WOW! You better gather those Four ole white boys and go change their DEPENDS!!!!

Hiring 400 teachers is not impressive at all especially when over half them are on the job training! Do you actually think your child is getting the best education possible when these teachers really don’t have the proper training? That is just like letting a doctor perform surgery on you who is learning by experimenting. They are experimenting with your children until they learn the techniques from so called facilitators in the school district. It’s time for parents to stand up and demand better for their children. You better believe that there is no way a superb teaching would quit their job in another county to come and teach in a county who is about to lose their accreditation or be put on probation by SAC. It seems to me that parents are cool with that!!! The few good teachers that are left maybe leaving next year because they are tired of all of the problems.

Wow, Teachlady, I guess the shoe fits! Actually, I have a very good job in the banking industry and my husband is an IT manager. My sister and I were both National Merit Scholars and she is a chemical engineer. We are both products of the public school system and I am a staunch advocate of GOOD public schools. Both of my parents are retired educators on the high school and college level. I am from a family who places a high priority on education and managed to become educated right out of Reconstruction and through Jim Crow. I could have been a teacher quite easily and have the highest respect and regard for the profession, I just chose another career path. I unapologetically say that I would not put our family dog in the Clayton county school system at this time and I feel sorry for families that have set proper priorities and still don’t have any other alternative.

Why do you assume that all private schools are expensive? It’s really all about where your priorities are and what you value. All private schools are not expensive and some even offer financial aid. I do agree that there are some bad private schools but you must do some research. We carefully researched a number or independent schools based on their academic results as well as tuition requirement. We also researched our zoned public elementary school and the academic results were horrible. Why in the world would I voluntarily enroll my child in a documented poorly performing school?

Why don’t the poor parents who have kids “trapped” in this system lead the charge and fight for it? The low turnout at informational meeting and rallies speak volumes about who is really ready to go “balls to the wall” for a quality Clayco education for their kids. It also confirms my point that the class demographic of this county must change in order for any progress to ensue. It’s really all about where your priorities lie and what you value. I’ve witnessed some of the nicest luxury cars pulling up to drop kids off at some the worse schools so I don’t entirely buy the “poverty” line. We make investments into what we value. I’ve wondered what advantages that child could have received with the proper investment of the $900 car note money, or the $100 weekly hair, mani/pedi appointment?
