Can Clayton lure new businesses?

A few new businesses are trickling into Clayton County. At a time when much of the attention is focusing on problems in the school system, it’s refreshing to learn new jobs are being created. Read my latest blog entry on Wordpress

Local elections: Out with the old?

This is the first time that I have ever paid such close attention to local elections. Although I voted in every election I could, this is the first time I felt my vote could really make a difference in the outcome.

These runoffs have become equivalent to watching a heavyweight title bout, with the winner(s) either taking Clayton County in a new direction, or maintaining the status quo.

I’m just curious … is anyone out there satisfied with the current status quo in Clayton County? The runoff candidates are: County Commissioner: Eldrin Bell (I) versus Lee Scott.
District Attorney: Tracy Graham-Lawson versus Jewel Scott (I).
District 3 Commissioner - Wole Ralph (I) versus Angela Redding.
School Board: District 2 (Lindsey McDaniel, III v. Wanda Smith); District 3 (Jessie Goree v. Charles Davis); District 4 (Michael King v. Milton Mack); District 5 (Ophelia Burroughs v. Jennifer Talley); and District 6 (Mary Baker v. John Askew). Sheriff - Victor Hill (I) versus Kem Kimbrough.

The race is not over for this winner or Clayton residents as Jack Rainwater waits to see who he will face come November

U.S. Senate: Vernon Jones v. Jim Martin.

I advance voted late last week and the good news is, at least in my area, the turnout was higher than in July according to poll workers I spoke with. That’s progress! Come back after the election to either celebrate or commiserate depending on who you vote for.

On another note - Clayton County Public Schools reconvene on Thursday. Given all our children have gone through lately, please show them some support by participating in CCPS’ annual “Day One” project. “The role of the volunteer is to welcome students with a friendly smile when they arrive, give them a pen or pencil, and offer words of encouragement. This should only take about 90 minutes,” according to Rhonda Burnough, Coordinator of Day One.

You may volunteer at the school of your choice. Please contact Burnough at 770-473-2760 to sign up.

Hi Kimberly, I see you just gave in to the inevitable and did this about the election. LOL. For the most part if i see an I by their name they will not get my vote this time. The only real exception will be the County Commissioner Chairmanship. I am sorry but Lee Scott is just too scary. Not to mention He looks like he might stroke out at any second. So I believe that while sometimes change is good not all change is helpful. If you give me the feeling you are crooked you do not get my vote.

I agree with the blog before me. With the exception of Eldrin Bell, all incumbents have to go this time. I’m not wild about Bell but Lee Scott would probably do more harm to the county than Victor Hill has. The county can’t take that.

We need to start a campaign to write in Bob Hartley for Commission Chairman. Frankly, I don’t like either of my choices for Chairman. Both Bell and Scott have baggage. Does anyone know what the process would entail?

I like the idea. Is it true whoever wins tomorrow is going to be it? Is there anyone running in November? I think Bob would be a fine Chairman.

Things are looking bleak in this county. I may just take my family to somewhere else!

I too, like you Kimberly, took advantage of early voting. I am proud to proclaim that any candidtate with an (I) by there name, I voted agianst. The Scotts have damaged this County something terribly as has Hill. The candidates, Tracy-Graham Lawson and Kem Kimbrough bring forward good idea’s and have excellent credentials. I have had the pleasure of meeting them both and they offer a vision for the future that I believe will turn this County around.

I would have liked to had the opportunity to meet persoanlly with Sheriff Hill and the Scotts but it seems that they never attended any Candidate Forums which offered me great concern.

I encourage everyone to vote. Regardless of your personal beliefs in the local elections, it is important for everyone to vote.

People, you have got to go with those already on the ballot. It is too late to start thinking about “write-in” candidates now. I don’t know how you write in a name with the computerized system we have now anyway. Don’t NOT VOTE out of frustration. Bell is the best we have to choose from for county commissioner even if we aren’t crazy about him. Lee Scott would bring the county down even more. The Scott’s need to move elsewhere. With the other candidates just vote against the incumbents. As for the question about these winners having opposition in Nov., yes, Kem Kimbrough would have to face a republican then. He’s a white man named Rainwater. I don’t know anything about him but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. I think Kimbrough is probably the best and I’ll stick with him and not just because of color. I’m way past voting like that and have noticed most of my friends are too.

I just wish that this election was over already… I am more than sick of hearing the constant stream of advertisements from “Friends of Scott” on radio and TV… not to mention the GAZILLION pieces of trash littering the roadsides in the form of campaign signs.

I am more than happy to report that I voted against the Scott political machine and Victor Molehill on Friday in advanced voting. (the poll was doing a brisk business, I am happy to say.)

As far as Caribbean Queen getting another term to practice her brand of DA work - that would send a clear message to the criminal element of Clayton County that we are open for business. when she talks about tempering justice with mercy, what on earth does that mean? Isn’t the DA’s job to prosecute? Shouldn’t she leave the social programs to the social workers and the mercy to the judges and juries? She is way too soft and the criminals are loving it!!! Four more years of Jewel Scott would spell the end of civil society in Clayton County.

Case in point, there have been 3 house burglaries on our little cul-de-sac over the past several weeks as it is and others with whom I spoken have seen the same in their neighborhoods or have been victims themselves. (I hope they take a crack at our place - I’ve got a big, mean Rottweiler and a .38 waiting for them.) Even if they caught these thugs, they probably wouldn’t get a case brought against them since Jewel is working so hard to maintain her bogus 100% conviction rate on rapes & murders.

I really hate to imagine what would happen if the “evil triumvirate” (Scott/Scott/Hill) is elected - since I can’t afford to move, my property would become a barricaded fallout shelter, complete with booby traps and a moat!

After watching Lee Scott’s commercials about Eldrin Bell and the fact that Bell allowed a stripe joint to come into Clayton County while we are already dealing with bad elements. I will be casting my vote for Lee Scott. I have already seen what Eldrin Bell has done with the county as far as trying to get richer off of CCPS land deal and a crime rate that is going up and home values going down. Eldrin Bell has used this county for his cash cow for to long. I know Lee Scott is a hot head (maybe it is because he is also feed up with the way this county continues to be run) but I have had a chance to talk with him and he has some good ideas for moving this county forward. So out with the old and let’s try the new because we all know the old chairman is not working for the people. VOTE FOR LEE SCOTT

I cannot believe that Victor Hill is getting another run for the office! He is costing the county millons!!! But no one seems to care! Please answer a question for me - You are willing to protests and march and act ignorant when it comes to the School Board, but when it comes time for your voice to be heard and counted by VOTING, you don’t show up to the polls. **Larger turnout needed to decide school board contests, sheriff’s race in beleaguered county

By Maureen Downey The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 07/28/08

Every Clayton County voter who cast a ballot on July 15 has to return to the polls on Aug. 5 and drag along five friends. The outcome of the runoff will determine whether Clayton overcomes its many woes or sinks deeper into them.**

Even with the future of the county in the balance, only 21 percent of voters cast ballots in July. If Clayton residents want to salvage their county’s reputation and its schools, more of them must participate in the runoff election.

First up for Clayton voters are five school board contests. One problem is that many candidates in the runoff are educators or school employees. Ideally, parents should be the dominant voice on school boards rather than current or past school employees.

Here are The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s endorsements in critical Clayton races:

SCHOOL BOARD

District 2: Lindsey McDaniel, who runs a teenage mentoring program, would be an asset to the troubled board. The winner will face Republican Della Ashley in November.

District 3: Two former public school employees are vying for the seat —- retired Clayton County educator Jessie Goree and Charles Davis, a retired Atlanta Public Schools maintenance supervisor. Goree’s knowledge of innovative education practices makes her the stronger candidate.

District 4: While Milton Mack is also a teacher, he’s the better choice in this contest.

District 5: Social worker Jennifer Talley offers a fresh voice as well as the bonus of not being a teacher. Retired Jonesboro High English teacher Ophelia Burroughs has a higher profile in the community, but the school board risks being dominated by educators. Given these two strong candidates, voters should opt for Talley to provide balance. The winner will face Republican Diana Nicholson in November.

District 6: Mary Baker has been paying close attention to the school board for a decade and understands its role and its mission. She deserves a seat on the board.

COUNTY COMMISSION CHAIRMAN

In the runoff for County Commission chairman, Lee Scott is attacking incumbent Eldrin Bell with the name-calling and innuendo that became his signature in his previous bids for public office. Scott offers voters little substance, which is why he avoids public forums that would expose him. He relies on inflammatory mailings and billboards to sell himself and disparage his opponent.

Venom and vitriol fuel Scott’s political machine. That combination has helped him propel several unqualified people to elected office, including his wife, Jewel, who is district attorney. Clayton voters ought to reclaim their county and derail Scott’s hate machine. They should stand by Bell. Because no Republican filed, the winner of the Democratic primary takes the seat.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Voters ought to oust District Attorney Jewel Scott, who was never qualified to hold her job in the first place. Instead, voters ought to support Juvenile Court Judge Tracy Graham-Lawson, whose legal experience is far more relevant to the challenge of getting criminals off Clayton’s streets.

When Clayton voters elected Scott four years ago, she brought no criminal trial experience to the job and has botched high-profile murder cases. A former prosecutor, Graham-Lawson’s been a juvenile judge for 13 years. In her 10 years as an assistant DA in Clayton, Graham-Lawson amassed an impressive conviction rate.

A Duke graduate, she was a police officer and firefighter before earning her law degree at the University of North Carolina. As a judge, she’s created a Second Chance Drug Court for high-risk offenders and established programs to keep kids out of jail and on the straight and narrow.

Voters ought to rebuff the efforts of Scott and her husband to consolidate their power in Clayton using racially charged politics and misrepresentations of their accomplishments. Because no Republican filed, the winner of the Democratic primary takes the seat.

SHERIFF

In the dictionary, Clayton Sheriff Victor Hill’s photo ought to appear alongside “deranged.” From posting snipers on the roof after he laid off 27 deputies to blatantly disregarding a federal court order, Hill has turned into more than a loose cannon. He’s a nuclear bomb in free fall.

Despite his bizarre and costly behavior, Hill won 49 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary in July. He’s in a runoff now with attorney Kem Kimbrough, who has experience as a major in the sheriff’s office and who can return sanity and stability to the Sheriff’s Department. Kimbrough is a graduate of Morehouse College and Emory University School of Law.

If voters want to avoid lawsuits, they ought to support Kimbrough. Hill’s become such a risk that Clayton County commissioners sought legal protection in May from future liability for his actions. Commissioners warned that Hill’s “objectionable actions, policies and practices concerning management of the county jail and sheriff’s office personnel negatively impact Clayton County’s reputation and endanger the citizens of Clayton County and the state of Georgia.”

After Hill violated a federal court order in 2006, the frustrated judge said, “This litigation is a disaster for Clayton County, for the sheriff of Clayton County and for the citizens.” U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash went on to add, “I guess the public is the biggest loser.”

And the public will be the biggest loser again if Hill wins the Aug. 5 runoff. If voters want to stop losing lawsuits, their choice must be Kimbrough. The runoff winner faces Republican Jack Rainwater in November.

I agree, you CANNOT trust Lee Scott or Victor Hill. Victor is just a ‘little” man with a complex about his size. Therefore, he tries to make up for it by being a tyrant. We, taxpayers, can’t afford for him to stay in office as he will drain our pockets with continuing law suits. Lee Scott came into the county with his wife planning to “take over” things. We cannot let this happen. He is a bully to his wife and everyone else he deals with. Remember this when you go to the polls tomorrow and vote for Eldrin (regretfully), Tracy Graham-Lawson and Kem Kimbrough.

A cautionary note to Blacksoul and anyone else who tends to paint groups of people with a broad brush -

Chris Rock may have made that generalization about black men over 60, but he also expressed sympathy for OJ Simpson’s murder of Nicole Brown Simpson. (although he didn’t actually condone murder.) He’s a comedian and making a general observation should not be taken as fact.

My best friend is a 66 year old black male and he’s been married to a white woman for over 20 years. Hardly one who hates white people.

On the other hand, Lee Scott has CONSISTENTLY used race-baiting tactics, including using the confederate flag in inflammatory campaign ads, and other overt references to “us”, “our people” and other code used for racially divisive politics. He has even sent campaign propaganda to households with a registered white voter and registered black voter with it only addressed to the black voter.

I can understand that there are people out there, sadly, that fall right into that trap. It takes a certain level of intelligence to read through some of these deceptive ploys. Many residents here, unfortunately, do not possess such capacity.

Therefore, thinking, caring, intelligent residents of Clayton County CANNOT ENTRUST THIS ELECTION TO THE DUMB MASSES. Take time off of work, or whatever you need to do to get out and vote against the power-hungry, exploitation of the Lee “I am the walrus” Scott, Caribbean Queen and Victor Molehill.

I like Eldrin Bell too! Briefly, I worked for the CCBOC, and although he can come off as somewhat uppity, he responds very quickly to issues brought to his attention by citizens. Whether, he has done his best or not, I believe he has at least tried. I also believe that he has the public interest at heart, unlike Lee Scott. Scott’s interest in getting his wife elected was obviously so that he could get his record expunged. And, as a real estate developer, I am sure he is interested in what properties he can pawn off on Clayton taxpayers for a healthy profit. Conflict of interest won’t matter because his wife is the DA and would never put him before a grand jury for unethical behavior. You have to get to the core of the candidates motives.

To glynda,

Glynda the question you should be asking is:

Why did Victor Hill, Lee Scott nor Jewel Scott not attend ANY of the voter education forums held by various county organizations over the past 3-4 months?

Oh excuse me, Victor attended one last week.

Lee Scott is still a no-show and I still have no idea what he’s a “proven leader” of or for.

Jewel Scott prefers to deliver racial rhetoric in her mailings instead of facing her constituents, unless you count her standing on the median at Upper Riverdale Road & Tara Blvd. blocking traffic & waving to people trying to make their way to work as a way to “educate voters”

I would like to point out that displaying religious literature at the polling place constitutes illegal influence. Not ALL Clayton County residents are Christian, and those who are are sent the message to vote for the “most Christian,” not the best-qualified, candidates. I am referring specifically to the prominently-displayed booklet “God’s Plan for a Happy Marriage” at RD6 this morning. I have filed a complaint with the Secretary of State and contacted the ACLU. On behalf of Clayton County’s Muslim, Buddhist, Baha’i, secular, and Jewish voters, as well as all other Christian and non-Christian voters who believe in free and fair elections, I protest most strenuously.

Robin Kemp:

Although, I recognize your right to your opinions, your anti-Christian views turn my stomach. If you are not a Christian, then don’t look at the literature. Or, be more proactive and publish literature supporting Muslim, Buddhist, Baha’i, secular, Jewish, and in your case atheist values. Christians would not deny you the right to distribute literature. All you are promoting is hatred in another form. Instead of using racism, you attack religion. In reality, all you really want is to make yourself feel important by creating scandal. Doesn’t Clayton County already have enough problems?

Complaining is always easier than being proactive. You want to take on the cause of all of those religions, but you are only doing them a disservice.

She named off five things in one sentence and used one comma. My sides still hurt. She could not possibly sound more ignorant! Even her stats make her sound foolish. The murder rate has jumped from 20 to 110 since 2004, and she hasn’t increased staff, and has only lost 4 staff since then. Look at all she’s accomplished!

Now that is classic!

Usually, thinks need to hit rock bottom before they begin to rise to new highs…just think about the stock market. Hopefully Clayton has hit bottom and is ready to rise. Everyone should now see that voting for the “black” candidate isn’t a winning strategy. I’m black and I’m ashamed to know people who vote on the basis of color only…both black and white. When we people educate themselves and figure out that these candidates take advantage of your blind trust….they make more money and you continue to suffer in your misguided trust.

I’m still disappointed(sp?) in the voter turnout, but I think the slight up-swing from the primaries is definitely a positive. This should be a new beginning for Clayton County but I am concerned for previous remarks made and even here after the recent response to the election results. Jewell Scott was quoted in regards to Tracy Graham-Lawson and she referred to Tracy as a “hanging judge” and a “shill of the old white power structure”. Why is this not considered a “racist” remark? How can we move forward if some will not leave the past. We all recognize the attrocities inflicted upon blacks in the south and it will take all of us to come together to put those issues into perpsective as we move forward. Sometimes I long for those days after “9 11” when on September 12, 2001 and the days that followed shortly there after. The days when we were not black or white, liberal or conservative, replubican or democrat but AMERICANS! AMERICANS TOGETHER. How soon we forget.

August 6, 2008 1:44 PM | Link to this

The rise of White power in Clayton County. How does a slate of white candidates win in a predominate black county? Disunity, lack of vision and just straight up buffoonery by black elected officials.

The July 15th primary saw a 20% voter turnout county wide. 9% of that 20% was the black vote. 91% of blacks did not vote county wide. Let’s not kid ourselves. Race is a factor in America in 2008. Can a black slate of candidates win in a predominantly white political theater? If so show me where. Were there qualified black candidates? Sure there were. The challenge facing the citizens and the newly elected white officials is to distribute fairly the contracts and vending opportunity for ALL citizens. Another challenge facing the black community is unite. There are so many splintered groups in this county that don’t work together and thus work against each other. A divided community is a conquered community. The final challenge is how to get the other 91% of black voters to exercise their political muscle?

The extremely small splinter of voters who were united picked the leadership of this county. Victor Hill was a clown! Jewell Scott suffered because she is the wife of the most disliked and controversial political figure in the county. Gail Davenport fell out of favor with her constituents and Keven Thomas sealed his fate by allowing the consolidation measure on the ballot. Whats next? Look for the up-coming commissioners races, the judges races and of course the municipal races to add to the minority’s majority. I’m not saying white candidates are bad choices for Clayton County, but a 91% deficit in black voter turnout is.

Victor and the Snotts just mailed me a check for $50,000 for the equity I lost in my property value from the time they took office. Just kidding, but it sure seems a little peaceful right now. I sense a rebirth of Clayton….It’s going to be great to see Lee Scott ugly face removed from around our county. Death of Black Power- Why don’t you see if you can hitch a ride with the rest of the racist, hater, losers. You’re as bad as Lester Maddox, Richard Byrd, or Strom Thurmond ever were. Some of us are trying to live Dr. King’s dream. Some of us are intelligent enough to understand what he was saying. Apparently, you aren’t. So why don’t you leave and go somewhere else so Clayton County can rise again instead of living in the past. Just because you’re black or white doesn’t mean you’re qualified to lead. The losers in this election have proven that.

By huh?

August 6, 2008 2:15 PM | Link to this

Actually, Jewel Scott suffered from her own incompetence and inability to do the job she was elected to do. Not to mention the outright lies (i.e., 100% conviction rate among many other lies) told in her campaign brochures. Being married to Lee Scott did not help but that’s her problem not ours.

Thanks for that reminder. The Scotts and Victor Hill need to take Kevin Thomas & his wife Michelle (loser of the Clerk of Court race) & hightail it out of here.

As a black person, I’m actually happy that the apathetic voters (most of whom are probably black, but I’m sure other groups are mixed in there) didn’t show up at the polls. They probably would’ve voted based on billboards instead of qualifications & that’s what got us to this point in time.

Having a mixed bag of blacks, whites & hopefully political parties will be good for this county. We all don’t have to be the same color to get the job done and make Clayton great again. I for one am sick and tired of being ashamed to tell people where I live.

As part of his presentation, he encourages teenagers to submit questions anonymously and finds himself inundated with thoughtful and sometimes surprising questions.

“Because ‘ignorance is no defense’ to a violation of law, the education of our teenagers is an urgent priority.”

Over the past three years we have received hundreds of calls from people once their son, daughter, grandchild, neice, nephew or significant other has been arrested. This has to stop and we must educate ourselves and our children about Georgia Law. What can start out as a misdemeanor charge can end up as a felony, due to ignorance of the law. Do not find yourself guilty of not providing our teenagers with the knowledge they need to pursue higher education. A criminal record can impede their goals and aspirations.

Death by Black Power

We need to stop this race mess. We have blacks and whites that were elected last night and are more than qualified to do the job. This county should not be about Republican, Democratics, black or white, that’s just a party. I understand Rainwater is not Republican but he used that to get on the ballot to help make a difference in this county to get the Scotts and Hill out.

Now more than ever we should pull together to bring this county back.

We need to be civil and respectful to each other during this last leg of the elections. It takes more energy to hate than it does to love and understand a person. Let’s show the nation that we are civil and can be on the road to recovery now that the trash has been taken out. I will support whom ever is elected even though I have my preference.

How fast can we get rid of the Scott billboards?

By John Stewart

August 6, 2008 6:27 PM | Link to this

To ALP:

Let me speak to you from my personal perspective of being one of Jamaican heritage. Mrs. Scott used her Caribbean heritage to solidify her foothold in the county as she knows that Clayton County in recent years has the fastest growing Caribbean population in Metro Atlanta. Lee Scott did the same thing by specifically mentioning his father was from Jamaica in political literature.

I am not sure if you know of the history of the Scott’s in Clayton politics but they have became “Horse Leeches” upon the county. If you check your history you can directly link the Scott’s back to the current Accreditation crisis that we still face as it was Lee Scott who financially backed the candidates who are the center of the first fiasco in 2000 and the one currently. The Scott’s have continued to use race to further their political careers and those who they back. I am ashamed of this specifically being a Jamaican and knowing our National motto “Out of Many One People” That many in Jamaica consists of Black, White, Asian, etc. So for her to be a party to using race to gain office is reprehensible.

I fault Jewel Scott for not being ethical in the holding of her office and not being qualified in the sense she didn’t know how to run the office. She was unethical in expunging her husbands record of a felony. This should have been differed to another attorney to do. She was also unethical in contacting District Atty. Paul Howard to influence him when her son was charged with attacking and Atlanta police officer. Mrs. Scott was ignorant in the duties of her office as she had several opportunities to charge school board members with maleficence however she never did. The reason why is because she was ignorant of Georgia law. This was blatantly evident after District Atty elect Graham-Lawson mentioned she would go after the board members in question at a political event that was covered by the press and only a week later Mrs. Scott mentioned that should would convene a Grand Jury in an obvious political ploy to charge board members.

For those reasons I say Mrs. Scott was unqualified and unethical while in the office of District Atty. I am equally ashamed that she would use her heritage to remain in office as she was not qualified for it. You know as being a person of Caribbean decent that if we try to do anything, we try to be the best at what we do and want to be looked at in that light alone. Mrs. Scott was not the best.

Kem Kimbrough worked for the former Sheriff Tuggle. What was he supposed to do - quit his job when Victurd took over? Unless you’ve asked him why he participated in “snipergate”, how can you judge his actions that day?

With a family to support, it may have been his only option.

I like his idea about assigning permanent deputies to a specific location within the county. That way, the deputy knows what’s going in that area especially with regard to serving warrants, etc.

Hi Clayton Taxpayer.

Rainwater as best I understand had to wait until the run offs were done. Now you will hear a lot more from him and about him. He has also provided a cell number where he can be reached if you wish to ask questions or speak to him.

I was given this last week by his manager 404 438-3001. I hope that is right.

I spoke to him after the run off and he is ready for Nov as well as Kimbrough is.

I am voting for Rainwater also. I feel he is grounded doesn’t have an ego, and not looking for fame nor title and keeps a low profile and very well rounded in the position he is seeking as sheriff. This is what we need in this county. We have been to much in the newspaper and the media. We need to get back to the business of running this county and progressing in our lives.

By Jesse McGlavin

August 7, 2008 11:29 AM | Link to this

Clayton Taxpayer,

I understand your point. However, sometimes in life one has to pick a path to travel. I would not be part of situation like “Snipergate”. I would quit rather that have my intentions, professional integrity and morals questioned. A person with Kimbros qualifications can easily lateral to another agency. I have nothing against Kimbro, but I am uncomfortable with the fact that he was part of Lil Mans regime. When faced with the opportunity to rid Clayton County of lil Man, I went with Kimbro. Now I have another alternative and I will exerciser that right and vote for Rainwater. What do I like about Rainwater? 1. No ties to Clayton County “Political Machine” 2. Highly qualified after a life time in Law Enforcement 3. Stable family Man 4. Great vision for the Sheriff office and the means to move it forward. 5. Hard working community servant in Clayton County.

The choice is clear! Jack Rainwater is the better man for the citizens of Clayton County. I hope the voters will continue to make the right choices in the upcoming election so that we can once again be proud to claim we live in Clayton County.

P.S.

Don’t let the fact that Jack Rainwater is running as a Republican throw you for a loop. Jack Rainwater was our last hope if, for whatever reason, Lil Man won his primary and run-off elections. Jack Rainwater made a calculated decision to switch over just in case. Was it a risky move? absolutely, but we are electing someone who will protect the county from thugs and hoodlums while providing fair and impartial rehabilitative opportunities to those unfortunate few who did make a wrong decision. We are not choosing a political party!

Vote Smart, Vote Right, Vote Rainwater

I agree with Upset on titles and ego.

Kimbrough is very well spoken and has a law degree. All that is wonderful but, that does not mean that because he is a smooth talker he is best suited. Everyone have a choice, and mine is Rainwater. He has no baggage, no ego and, nothing bad to say about anyone. He just want to take care of the people of this county and I applaud him for taking a stance. This is a black and Democratic county. Rainwater is Native American running Republican because he had to because the Democratics had flooded the vote and Victor would have gotten out again. For those of you that keep thinking Rainwater is a racist, Believe me, I have seen and been around him. He is not. His wife is black and he surronds himself with all race of people. I urge you all to vote after you have educated yourselves about these 2 guys. Then make a choice.

This is not about Republican nor Democratic(thats only a party). This is about who we feel can do a great job for this county.

Yall remember, Victor was humble also until he got in office then he turn into Satan. Because he knew once he was in, we could do nothing about it.

During the Nov. elections, you can vote Republican and Democratic. That is the only time you can do that.

I read that the majority of people in Ellenwood voted for the Scotts & Hill. Unbelievable! I thought the people in Ellenwood were smarter than that. I live in Ellenwood, so don’t hold that against everybody that lives there. I voted Graham-Lawson, Kem & Bell.

First of all lets set the record straight — it is a disgrace in a county where the school system is being threatened with decertification less than 1500 registered voters appeared at the polls for elections. There were more people at the meetings shouting at the camera than voted.

In recent years we have promoted politicans based upon the number of signs they posted or personality. When they disappointed us, we continuedto vote for sorry politicans.

It is time people learned the issues and voted accordingly.

Congrats Kem.

Rainwater is my choice and I am Democratic. Sorry I am about the old school, loyality, deducation to the people and your job. This man his been around in law enforcement a long time and knows the ropes.

He never braggs about what he has done or doing. FYI, he worked on the task force of the missing and murdered children. Our kids are very important to us. Rainwater also was a coach on the soccer association in Lovejoy for many years, and the President of the soccer association for 2 years to name a few things!!!!

He has no baggage as stated above, and no ties to any of this mess in Clayton County. In other words We have a fresh clean person that want to do a good job for us.

Believe me, Victor has done his checking also and, I know Rainwater is one of the only ones that does not have bones in his closet.

Rainwater Sheriff 2008.

Clayton Taxpayer

You are correct. He should not have left his job for that reason. I was at a forum when he stated why he left and he said he did not agree with the climate in the Sheriff department, and that as an attorney he have the options to move around. If he had these options and did not like what was going on, why did he not leave then? Something is wrong there. I heard a different reason why he left and this was told by someone that was there when the incident happened. I will not say what because, Kem knows this is the baggage in his closet, and it will come out, I bet by Victor!!!

Let me first say that I haven’t officially made a decision on either candidate;

BUT, in defense of Kembrough, let’s keep in mind that Snipergate was on Hill’s first day in office. I’m sure that Kembrough, like all the rest of us in this county, wanted to give Victor a chance to prove himself. At the time, it was not clear that the terminations of 27 deputies was fair or unfair.

As far as baggage in his closet goes, if Victor Hill had anything on Kembrough, he would have most certainly brought it out before the run-off. Use your head and base your opinions on facts and logic. Not malicious rumor.

I’m not saying that there is not truth in it, but unless your friend worked in the personnel office and officially handled Kembrough’s seperation, he/she can’t say that they truly know the reason why he left.

Wow. nothing to blog about since the Scotts and Hill were eliminated. Hopefully, everyone’s planning how to undo all the harm they caused the county. Now, all we need is to get rid of the OVER paid and OVER hyped Dr Thompson, the remaining BOE members that refused to leave, and maybe, just maybe things will get back to some sort of normalacy, at least not be in the AJC EVERY day.

Why does Clayton not do these type of events? We not only have Ft. Gillam, but we also have the National Guard HQ in our county.

Published: Thursday, August 07, 2008 Wounded troops celebrated in Locust Grove

By Johnny Jackson

jjackson@henryherald.com

Some of the 54 wounded troops were moved to near-tears as they received an outpouring of support from members of the Henry County community early Wednesday morning.

More than 600 Locust Grove Elementary School students and teachers lined the streets as Henry County Police escorted the Fort Benning-Columbus, Ga., Wounded Troop Battalion through the small town of Locust Grove.

“We asked all the children and teachers to dress in red, white, and blue,” said Christi Peterman, the school’s principal.

The troops were not informed of the patriotic welcome before hand. Several of them got off the bus and out of the vehicles they were traveling in to greet the children.

“When we got to meet the men and women, we told them how much we appreciated them,” Peterman said. “The troops - you can tell how much it really meant to them.”

“It was very meaningful to me,” said Peterman, whose son recently served two tours in Iraq as a U.S. Marine. “The kids loved it,” she added. “It was powerful, and it’s something that the children will never forget.”

Several Locust Grove citizens took part in the patriotic celebration as well. The nation’s flag was hung from a Henry County Fire Department ladder truck, which extended high above the town’s Main Street as the caravan of wounded troops passed under.

“It was just a great event,” said Linda Hutchison, Locust Grove’s downtown development coordinator. “We welcomed them with flags and posters, and showed them how much we appreciate what they did.”

The Locust Grove Mayor’s Office issued a proclamation on behalf of the battalion, which made the trip through Locust Grove to deliver donations to the Noah’s Ark Children’s Care Home.

“The reason that they came was to bring donations to Noah’s Ark,” said Diane Smith, the assistant to Noah’s Ark director, Jama Hedgecoth. “They filled our hallway with donations [a moving truck-load of toys, bedding, food, toiletries and clothes]. It was amazing.”

The battalion was also honored during a ceremony attended by State Sen. John Douglas (R-Social Circle), Locust Grove Mayor Lorene Lindsey, Henry County Board of Commissioners Chairman Jason Harper, members of the Glen Haven Baptist Church, and many others.

“[The troops]said they had not received the kind of welcome that our community gave them anywhere else,” Smith said. “They were very, very touched by it.”

The troops were also given the opportunity to tour the Noah’s Ark Animal Rehabilitation Center.

“They were pretty amazed with Noah’s Ark,” Smith said. “And we were overwhelmed with what they did for us.”

Added Harper: “They were thinking they were going to be the givers,” he said. “The most moving thing is the students were allowed to celebrate. It really was a moment.”
