Can Clayton lure new businesses?
A few new businesses are trickling into Clayton County. At a time when much of the attention is focusing on problems in the school system, it’s refreshing to learn new jobs are being created. Read my latest blog entry on Wordpress

What’s love got to do with it?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I guess I’m getting old, because I am starting to equate Valentine’s Day with other nonsensical holidays created to get us to spend money.
Like many, I’ve seen my fair share of Valentine’s Days and had no one to celebrate with. So while I am thankful for my soul mate, I’m just not feeling it this year.
My husband was surprised when I told him not to buy me anything. I suggested if he really wanted to get something, a card would be nice.
A co-worker overheard and asked how could I not want anything. I explained that I know my husband loves me and even if I was unsure of how he felt, candy, flowers or anything with Valentine’s Day written on it wouldn’t reassure me anyway.
Plus it is not like he doesn’t buy me any of those things at any other time. He’s pretty good at surprising me with a bouquet of flowers every now and then, and I love that.
But let’s face it, a dozen roses purchased for Valentine’s Day is equivalent to paying off a bill, maybe two depending on which bills you pay. Further, like for most Americans money is tight for us right now and it just feels like a waste of money.
I’m sure many feel this way about other holidays like Christmas, and although I would not compare the two that is a holiday we go all out for. Although bills come first at that time as well, and gifts are secondary.
Do you care about or celebrate Valentine’s Day? If so, what’s the best gift you have ever received?
Will you be upset if you don’t receive something from your loved one?
If you will celebrate, have a happy!

I completely agree with you. My significant other and I decided that while a small token would be nice, neither of us are overly concerned with giving or receiving much.
I spent the last 2-3 years almost completely miserable, so being with a fantastic woman is good enough for me.
Like you said, if the love is real, the gifts don’t matter; and if it isn’t, the gifts still don’t matter.

I’ve never understood why we should need a day on the calendar to remind us to put our significant other first and to show them appreciation and love. If we truly love them, we do these things anyways.

I could not agree more. I told my husband to buy a little something for our daughter, but not to bother with me.

It’s just another bogus “holiday” created for people to spend money.
I totally agree with your comments.

Its also another holiday to spread “loooove all over schools, have parties and not educate! It should not be celebrated at all in the public schools. If your family wants to celebrate, do so at home.

I agree with everybody so far. Crass commercialism that began with just kids giving very small cards, small candy kisses, etc. Maybe a male young lover giving an inexpensive trinket. Now, ‘they’ advertise ‘give her a diamond’. Lawdamercy. I’m ignorant about what they do in the schools nowadays. Is it not just another day, but maybe some of which I mentioned in my first sentence? If it’s much more, it’s definitely a waste and should be curtailed post haste.

I definitely would not expect my boyfriend to give me a diamond (unless he is proposing, Sam if you reading this HINT HINT) or any extravagant gift as a way to prove your love. Yes, I like flowers delivered to my job on Valentine’s Day. But if I don’t get them, I’ll survive.

I agree with you. I am very lucky to be with my husband for 18 yrs, He is alway bringing me roses. He knows i love to bake, he is alway walking in with baking items. He is very thoughtful. And most important he loves me. I feel sorry for the people that have to wait for valentines day to receive something. Beside it’s always better when it comes from the heart, not becasue you have to get it for someone…

I find this holiday very commercial, but I still get my hubby a little something, even if its just a small box of chocolates. Nothing too expensive and he does the same for me.

I am happy to see that most women are starting to see that these holidays are over-dramatized in order for everyone to go out on a spending frenzy.
One day or one gift on a particular day will not determine if he/she is truly in love with you. My wife and I spend money throughout the year on whatever it is that we want at that time. I don’t need someone or a date on the calendar to tell me when I should do this.

Valentine’s Day should be everyday not just on the 14th of Febuary. I suprise my Lisa with flowers, Victoria Secrets and anything else that I know she loves all throughout the year, to let her know how special she is to me. She is one in a million for sure.

If you are true lovers, you don’t need Valentines Day, you know your in love already. But then the stores wouldn’t get there cut. They sure can make you feel guilty if you don’t spend. We have all been programed by therwe commercials.

Well now clayton residents! Look what your school board has done. Lets see if you have a spine and do something about it, or will you just ignore it? $50 bet says you will do nothing!
