Can Clayton lure new businesses?
A few new businesses are trickling into Clayton County. At a time when much of the attention is focusing on problems in the school system, it’s refreshing to learn new jobs are being created. Read my latest blog entry on Wordpress

New sheriff in town?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
So far there are five people who want to become your new sheriff and one who wants to keep his job.
Below is a brief overview of our potential choices that I know about (in alphabetical order). If there are any others, please share with us:
Victor Hill (no website yet) - incumbent; former detective in the Clayton County Police Department; former District 81 Representative; recently reported that he intends to get “re-elected on his record of “quality of life issues,” and vice crack downs.”
Kemuel A. Kimbrough, Sr. (http://kemforsheriff.com/) - an attorney who worked five years in a previous sheriff’s administration.
Sherman Lemon (http://www.claytonpolice.com/CriminalInvestigationDivision.htm) - 28-year veteran of the Clayton County Police Department, currently serves as commander of its Criminal Investigation Division.
Jack Rainwater (rainwaterforsheriff.com) - 14-year career in law enforcement; former senior investigator for the Georgia State Department of Human Resources; currently working in private security management; has lived in Clayton county since 1974.
Ernest W. Strozier (http://www.strozierforsheriff.org/ ) - a lieutenant and 15-year veteran with the College Park Police Department; over 20 years of law enforcement experience in total.
Garland Watkins (http://electgarlandwatkinssheriff.com/) - current Clayton County police lieutenant; one of the 27 fired by Sheriff Hill in 2005.
Some Clayton residents who are shopping for a new sheriff worry that the vote will be split amongst all of these potential candidates, and Hill could get reelected anyway.
What do you think about these possibilities? Do any of them interest you, or are you satisfied with our current sheriff?

I think Victor Hill is doing an EXCELLENT job. He’s not scared to go after the drug dealers/thugs. Because of Victor, the CCPD has stepped up their game tremendously. Victor Hill will get my vote.

I find it very difficult to believe that Sheriff Hill will be able to fool the voters of Clayton County twice. If he does, shame on us! Shiny paint jobs and glossy newsletters will never take the place of good honest law enforcement. I plan to vote for Kem.

What about the multi million-dollar drug busts because of Victor Hill? How about the prostitution and illegal gambling busts because of Victor Hill? Should I go on? Victor Hill has cleaned up Clayton County so much, and will continue to do so once he is reelected.

I am praying every day that Clayton residents do not go for Victor Hill’s okey doke a second time.
You discussed image a few weeks ago - what image is Victor Hill portraying of this county by saying he needs a military tank to clean up the streets? No dealer is going to be scared of that, all he did is make this county look worse.
I don’t know who I’m voting for yet but do know I will not be voting for Victor Hill. Thanks for this info, had no idea there were so many people considering running already, that’s good news at least this time we actually have a CHOICE.

I think his “multi million” dollar drug busts is exaggerated.
The only thing Hill has done lately is stick a bunch of campaign signs everywhere he could.

Let’s get informed and educated about our candidates, people!! Voters who vote subjectively to the likes of I’m voting for Victor because “he’s doing an excellent job as he’s not afraid of drug dealers/thugs” is irresponsible and ridiculous. Do your homework and let’s not make the mistakes we made four years ago with many of our elected officials.
I do know of the millions he’s caused in lawsuits, the ethics violation, lack of teamwork and unwillingness to put his ego aside, low Dept. morale, working outside the scope of his responsibilities, etc. What I AM looking for are things to objectively evaluate him and the things he’s done while in office that are significant and higher than the bar I have set for him when he first became Sheriff. Yes, he’s had occasional drug busts and the shutting down of massage parlors/gambling locations. While very good, I expect more than just this and he has not met my threshold for re-election yet.
What I do like about the other potential candidates is some of the extensive years of experience they have in law enforcement. My vote will be on leadership and background experience, vision for Clayton County, and someone who will not put their best interests or ego first before the needs of the County.

Let me inform you of something very important. Most citizens of Clayton County care more about drug dealers, prostitutes, thugs, gangs, etc. getting put in jail because of Sheriff Hill. We do not care about whose feelings Hill hurt in the process. As long as it has not cost us tax payers money, we do not care about the firings, lawsuits, etc. So when it is time to vote, trust me, Victor Hill will win again because we want the criminals out of our county, period.

It does not matter if one has 50 years of experience, if they do not have a backbone like Victor Hill has, it just doesn’t matter! Victor is not in the brownnoising business, and people (that do not matter) are upset because of that. If Hill has hurt your feelings, get over it, because the majority of us voters can care less.

KR - Hill HAS cost the taxpayers not just money but MILLIONS due to his lack of knowledge & experience when he wrongfully fired 27 officers at teh beginning of his term? Or did you conveniently forget about that?
Clayton’s taxpayers will be paying for that mistake for YEARS to come. He has cost us enough.
And speak for yourself & those you know when you say that “Most citizens of Clayton County care more about drug dealers, prostitutes, thugs, gangs, etc. getting put in jail because of Sheriff Hill”
Many of us ALWAYS cared about those things, and the couple of busts that Hill has made during his term do not make up for all he has cost us.

Yes, inform us, KR. Please share the crime, drug, and gang activity statistics you have seen between 2000 - present that will help voters assess how much more improved Clayton County has become since Victor Hill has been in office.
This is the information that will be most beneficial for voters to use in evaluating his effectiveness. Unless you don’t really know.

The last thing Clayton County citizens need is a scared, weak, brownnosing new sheriff who will let the thugs run all over this county. And who pays the insurance premiums, KR? Expect taxpayers to pay more because of it.
And according to GBI Crime Statistics from Vic’s first day in office through 2006: Murder, Robbery, Assault, and Burglary have all increased. Some as much as 95%. Maybe if Victor would pay more attention to his responsibility of ensuring warrants are delivered and his side-kick Jewel Scott in prosecuting these thugs, these numbers may have decreased.
By WTF?
January 7, 2008 11:47 AM | Link to this
Idiocy, not jealousy, reigns supreme in Clayton!
Who do you think pays for the insurance? An insurance fairy? No the TAXPAYERS.
Why do you think the county is paying out the arse for insurance? (a) because nobody else will insure us thanks to Hill’s antics, so we have to take the only offer we are getting; and (b) insurance always goes UP when a claim is filed, and thanks to Hill’s power trip Clayton had to file one helluva claim.
Brainwashing is already in effect I see.

Truth of the matter is Hill is very personable and comes across very intelligent. From the many 1 on 1 convos I have had with him I like him on a personal note. As far as him being our Sheriff going forward I can’t support him.
He got bad legal advice and fired Sheriffs Deputies. He was very antagonistic in wanting reinstate said Deputies after a court order and has since pulled a George Bush in not wanting to take responsibilities for his decisions.
He has cost the county millions and the tab is running. Our last county insurer dropped Clayton County and all but one picked up CC to insure us again.
Our taxes haven’t gone up with this latest budget but best believe they will with the next one. Why? Hills lawsuits.
Finally please don’t fall for the banana in the tail pipe/dog and pony show drug busts. Don’t you realize all of this is happening around election time? Am I happy for them? Sure are!!! But truth of the matter is I am tired of the County looking foolish.

If Hill were doing his job, more warrants would be served and more criminals would be off of our streets.
We NEVER hear him talking about that, and that is a huge aspect of his job as sheriff. But serving warrants does not garner as much media publicity as buying a tank and showing it off on the 6:00pm news.
As far as “proof” of the insurance debacle, instead of asking strangers on a message board for proof, why don’t you try going to your weekly County Commission meetings held every Tuesday at 7pm and you would see and hear the proof for yourself instead of just blinding following Hill?
The proof you request is in the minutes of the BOC’s meeting dated December 18, and read as follows:
Approved a renewal of the county’s Package Liability Policy which includes Public Official Liaibility, Law Enforcement Liability, General Liability, and Auto Liability for the period of 1/1/2008 - 12/31/2008. Five (5) companies were approached for quotes. Only the incumbent, CV Starr/Everest, returned a quote that offers a premium for the same coverages included in the expiring policy. The recommendation is to renew this policy with CV STarr/Everest effective 1/1/2008 at a premium of $679,320.00.

KR, wHAT,
I have lived in Clayton County for close to 30 years and until recently, I have never been afraid to go anywhere in Clayton county at night. In the last 2 years or so, Clayton county’s crime rate has increased to a higher percentage than ever.
We have a sherrif who is more interested in getting his face on the TV and a district attorney who only had 5 years of law experience and that was as a divorce attorney.
Clayton county is now experiencing the biggest back log of serving warrants than has ever been known. There could only be 2 reasons for this: 1. the sherrif’s department is not doing there job or 2. the crime rate is going up.
yes, Victor has busted up massage parlors that he thought were linked to prostitution, but not 1 person in any of these busts were prosecuted. Lots of money and man hours involved in these stings for nothing except to get Victor’s face on the television.
Just because you hear about a “big” bust on the news does not mean these people are off the streets. If they don’t get prosecuted what good does it do. If the sherrif’s office does not have sufficient evidence to back it up after the bust, it’s just a waste of money but again, we get to see Victor on TV. Follow some of the busts that the sherrif’s department does and see how many of these actually end up being prosecuted.
I don’t think you will be very happy

The crime rate has gone up in Clayton because the rif-rafs, drug dealers, rapist, gangs, thugs moved here from Atlanta. As long as Fulton County tear down the projects, they will continue to move to Clayton and we will continue to have crime. It will take a whole army to get rid of them.

Being new to the county, I have listened to the media on every aspect of the sheriff’s department. What I do have a problem with is the county not working as one but moreso working to make their own personal gain. All of the lawsuits that everyone has spoken about was manipulated by one person, Eldrin Bell. Because Eldrin Bell, can not run the county in the whole the way he wants he turns the media on the things that Hill is doing because Hill is not playing nicely. Lately, I have seen more presence of sheriff cars than local police cars. Sheriff Hill and Jeff Turner are doing something about the county. Let them do it. I would reelect Hill.

Are we serious? We can’t be. I truly hope this is not a true representation of the mentality of those who will be voting this next election.
Seeing more sheriff vehicles, not being afraid of drug dealers/ thugs, being Captain Hotdog on TV, and accepting the increase in crime as OK because of the influx of Katrina/ Atlanta thugs is really why we should elect him another term for Sheriff?
Does anyone have something more substantial to offer as to why I should vote for Victor Hill? Something measurable?

Brown,
you are absolutely right about the county working together. That problem is county wide, the school board, the sherrif’s dept, the commissioners, all branches and aspects of Clayton county government.
However, being new to Clayton county, you may need to find out the history with Victor Hill and the county commissioners. Victor has been ambivalent towards the county commissioners before Eldrin was elected. I had the unpleasent experience of being at a county commision meeting where Victor and Charley Griswell got into it. This incident was started by Victor and it actually ended up on the news that night, that was is 2003. So it is not just the current commissioners but previous ones also. Victor wants to be Napoleon and will not let anyone tell him what he can and can’t do.
Victor should remember that he is not Napoleon and that he works for us.
Victor cost this county millions of dollars in his first 3 hours on the job.

Kem Kimbrough is an excellent candidate for Sheriff.
I went to law school with Kem years ago. He impressed me then and continues to impress me today. His dedication to law enforcement was evident to all when he continued to serve full-time as a law enforcement officer even while carrying a full load of classes at Emory Law School. In contrast, most of the student body could barely meet the demands of a full classload alone.
Kem stayed true to his Clayton County roots after graduation. Quite simply, Kem loves Clayton County. He has its best interest at heart.
Kem is and has always been a fair person, treating everyone with respect. Kem was and is a consensus-builder, which is what I believe Clayton County so desperately needs.
Kem is educated, well-respected thoughtful, and knows the law. He will follow the law in enforcing the law. Kem has experience in the administration of the Sheriff’s second to none. He served as the Chief Legal Advisor and Chief of the Jail under the previous administration.
Kem Kimbrough as Sheriff of Clayton County would help restore credibility to Clayton County and stability to its governing institutions. I think the good folks of Clayton County would do themselves an enormous service by electing Kem.

Total number of crimes in 2006 = 2093 2005 = 2301 2004 = 2706 2003 = 2120 2002 = 1780 2001 = 1907
But this is just total number. You’d better prep yourself by looking at the change in types of crimes rather than just the total number.

KR, who do you think pays for the insurance? Duh! That would be the citizens of Clayton County. I’ve been a resident of Clayton County for nearly 10 years and I must say that with each election, the citizens have supported individuals that have lacked proven leadership - and that includes Sheriff Hill. I’m supporting Kem because he is a team player and he understands the laws that govern our state and county.

The bottom line here is that Victor Hill has made Clayton’s Sheriff Department the laughing stock of the state. A tank? A tank we can ‘breach doors’ with? You don’t breach doors with a tank. Fred,
That’s the problem. Victor Hill isn’t a team player and doesn’t play well with others. It’s not about having a backbone as some have said, its about being competent and doing the job that the residents of Clayton County have entrusted him to do. And it’s about putting Clayton County first, not himself. If he were to collaborate, the County would be much more effective.
And if that were the case, I would probably feel different about him as Sheriff. But from what I have seen and heard from his Dept. since he’s been there (and from those who have worked with him in his previous positions), he’s not close to being what he’d like for all to believe. He can take his dog and pony show somewhere else. Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior and I’m not willing to vote for him unless he proves otherwise.

The Good Ol’ Boys network has long since gone from Clayton County. I’ll agree that they set forth a path to destruction or at least did nothing to deter it. That was the past and now we’ve got to fix the mess. I’ll afraid that Victor is NOT the man for that job. I’ve met Kem a few times and one thing I like about him is that he seems to listen, really listen. Some peolple are not motivated by money. Some people do things simply because it is the right thing to do. Right now, Kem has what this county needs. By the way, not to devalue law enforcement experience, but it takes a different skill set to supervise people and budgets than to be an officer. So the question you should be asking is which candidate has the executive and administrative level of experience that it takes to be an effective Sheriff.
As evident by the current administration, the learning curve can be steep and very expensive to us…the taxpayers. Being on the news every other night might make him look good, but it makes the county look bad. As a result, those who want to sell there homes can’t. Those who want to send there kids to public schools can’t. Let’s do what we can to get this county back on track. We shouldn’t have to be ashamed to tell people were we live. So, the question for you now is…do you want see Clayton improve or continue to deteriorate?

I was starting to like Kem, but because of your remarks, I’m starting to sway in another direction. From what you say, I don’t think Kem will be the best candidate.

Sounds like Kem should be running for Chairman instead of sheriff. That way he can do as much administrative stuff and keep up with all the finances, etc. I think I’ll go with Sherman Lemon. Looks like he has the experience needed to be sheriff.

Come on people stop fighting. Use your energy to better the county with the right people in the right jobs. And don’t forget as county residents you have a responsibilty to the county too keep your property maintained, raise your children, be a positive influence in your community. If you see something that needs doing do it.
If the police need to be called call them. The police can’t serve warrants with out information. Criminals don’t go to jail without being sentenced.
You only get one vote per election choose it wisely. Make educated decisions.
What you choose today is want you live under tommorrow. :)

If you find Clayton County so distateful and do not live here, then why are you wasting your time blogging about Clayco on Clayton.Talk? This seems weird to me. Shouldn’t you be heading for a swanky power lunch with your friends at Bone’s or some other over-priced restaurant? Dang it! You too must be afflicted with the Clayco Addiction. For those who have lived in and experienced Clayco for a substantial number of years and then depart for Peachtree City, Pickens County, or Pike County (the new up-and-coming Clayco Refugee Camp for the expatriates), many find that they have the malady called the Clayco Addiction. They break out in hives and the shakes when Clayco is mentioned. They keeping peering back to Clayco even though they live in much bluer zip codes. “What’s happening with…Or, I hear that…” Perhaps they miss the “realness” of the Clayco folk. Perhaps they actually miss the Victors of the world. Could it be that they really wish that they had a strong and effective and heck-bent-for-leather sheriff (a “Thugs be gone” Wyatt Earp type) like we have in Clayco…Lil Vic himself. Darn, Lee. You made miss be late for my power lunch at Butch’s.

Say What, I was thinking more big picture when I posted the previous message. Kem has law enforcement experience. He worked on the streets and in the jail and was great at both. At different points during his tour of duty, he was: a deputy, a transporter, an internal affairs investigator, jail administrator, and legal advisor..if that is not law enforcement experience, I do not know what is. When he left the department, he was a Major which is right under sheriff and chief in the officer hierchy. Do the research and be an informed voter.

I’ve read this entire blog and must say that my vote will be with Kem Kimbrough as Sheriff. Clayton County NEEDS a sheriff who has BOTH street knowledge and “book sense” as some folks would say. Victor Hill’s ego seems to be too big for Clayton County, and he’s one of the bafoons that I’m tired of making us look absolutely horrible.
I LOVE my community and my neighbors. I live in a nice subdivision in Clayton County, and I’m here to stay. I am involved with my kids’ schools because, regardless of the SACS mess right now, we still have GREAT teachers and principals at some of our schools who teach and lead with PASSION. And as a parent, I am determined to do my part.
So come these next elections, I’m ready to get rid of all incumbants ACROSS THE BOARD (school board, county commission, sheriff’s office) and bring in people who are qualified for the job.
My vote stands with Kem Kimbrough.

Call me “brainwashed, hoodwinked, falling for the banana in the tail pipe, whatever” but I like Victor Hill. He is a kick a* sheriff! He was absolutely right when he said he had a right to choose his own adminsitration. Unfortunately, he went about it the wrong way and I think that’s what a lot of people have trouble letting go of. As for Clayton county being a dump, there is crime everywhere. Their are molesters, rapists, carjackers and murderers in every county. There are a few counties that have managed to keep their crime rate low and that is because their housing costs are so high that you have to have a six figure income to qualify. This is how you keep the common folk out your neighborhoods, but then eventually they become victims of crime. It amazes me when people get on the news and say “this is such a nice neighborhood, you don’t expect things like that around here”. Well wake up people crime is everywhere.

At least under the past good ole boy networks, you did not hear about Clayton county in a negative light every night on the news, and the governement entities within the county were not fighting each other all the time and no one cost the taxpayers millions of dollars like the current “network” has done.

should the voters just forget that Hill cost taxpayers literally millions of dollars? I wouldn’t have denied him the opportunity to choose his own staff, but Hill didn’t even research how to go about it properly before he did what he did.
Whether he goes or stays (and I hope he goes), taxpayers will be paying for his mistake for years to come.
And Clayton’s businesses and taxpaying homeowners are the ones who will pay big, not the renters.
We’ll be paying for his “mistake” for years to come and our children could be paying for it if they stay in Clayton.
One question: if a white sheriff had done the same thing, would you all be as forgiving? Just a thought.

Sheriff Victor K. Hill is a great Sheriff. He has cracked down on crime. He has displayed a message to the criminals telling them that Clayton County is no play ground and with all due respect, he is not tolerating the nonsense. People, do you want a sheriff of command or a sheriff of command and execution? Sheriff Victor Hill does not only look good on paper but he does what he intend to do.Sheriff Hill, you have awaken Clayton County and keep up the good work. People, it is good that there are other candidates for sheriff, but pick the one who are going to get the job done.It takes more than experience to become sheriff. If experience is all that the candidates have to offer then the citizens is in for a rude awakening. The number one question should be for each candidate, what is your vision for Clayton County? For the people of Clayton County, I hope you choose a sheriff that includes the citizens in their vision. Sheriff Hill, you have already displayed your vision.Good luck to all candidates!

I checked back on the blog today and realized that there seems to be a bit of confusion about Kem Kimbrough’s experience in law enforcement and his becoming an attorney. I’ll just take a moment to clarify.
Kem worked as a law enforcement officer before coming to law school and also WHILE he was in law school—an incredible feat considering the time demands of each. After law school, he REMAINED in the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department as a Major (I think he was a Captain, then promoted) and assumed the duties as the Sheriff’s Legal Advisor. Before that, he ran the jails, apparently doing an outstanding job of keeping them clean and safe.
His experience as a law enforcement officer and as an attorney are not mutually exclusive.
Something one blogger said struck me as quite compelling—don’t we want Clayton County to be a desirable place to live? Don’t we want to be able to sell our homes for a good price? Don’t we want our schools to be great (or just accredited)? Each aspect of life is linked. If Clayton County gets a bad reputation for one reason or another, then it snowballs. Isn’t it time to read good things about Clayton County in the newspapers?
The slogan on Kem’s website is “Because Clayton Deserves Better.”
It is so true. You won’t go wrong voting for Kem Kimbrough.

Kem sounds like a smart, capable person. I also know Lemon’s as a capapble fine admisistrator. He also has spent many years trying to make this county better. I am so delighted to se viable candidates to replace the current sherrif. People should understand that even though in the past there was mismanagement of this county it is our responsibility to try to improve it so our children will have a better life. The sherrif is supposed to serve warrents nad the DA is to prosecute casses. For all the grandstanding about drug arrests etc., not many are being prosecuted and many that finally do make it to court do not hold up in trial. That is not the way it is supposed to work.

Not a drug dealer or user. Just someone who has seen what drugs do to communities, and know that a few busts won’t scare them for long regardless of what Hill & Turner are trying to convince people of. And FYI - tanks don’t scare them either.
If scare tactics worked that easily, there would be no drugs on the streets anywhere.
By BossLady

Drugs are the roots and underlying factor of crime. If you take a look at the stats (all counties) the robberies, murders, carjackings, auto thefts are people trying to pay the dealers, hooked on something and trying to settle drug accounts.
Victor Hill or any law enforcement department cannot follow around criminals and tell when they will strike. Crime is up everywhere and getting these drugs off the street is a good place to start. Make Clayton a county where they won’t want to do business anymore, which I think is the point of Mr. Hill.
I also, do not live in Clayton County but am concerned about all places where there is a problem.
How many times have you heard them say I am not going to Douglas County for nothing? This county prosecutes all crime and give the maximum time. Clayton’s DA whoever it is need to reallly crack down.

To all you Victor haters out there: Have you not heard, do you not know that these blogs do not vote? You can hide behind anonymity (as we all do but Bob Hartley — but Bob probably wants the publicity because he probably plans to run for school board since he was defeated twice for two different house seats: “Put a brother in the house!”) (Didn’t Ericka Davis just sit there impassively and watched Bob Hartley “PERSONALLY” attack Sandra Scott but if anyone else even deigns to mention her name, Rob Johnson’s name, or Yolanda Everett’s name — well let’s also throw in David Ashe’s name and Eddie White’s names — doesn’t she get apoplectic? Consistency. Thou art a virtue!) Yes sir, these blogs don’t vote, and the bloggers only get one vote each — if they do indeed live in the county. It’s not going to be any “vote early, vote often.” I’m missing my Vidalia onions right now. Can’t find them at Publix right now, and do indeed love to eat grilled onion sandwiches — with mustard, dill pickles, fresh spinach, lightly toasted whole wheat bread, Heinz ketchup, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Frank’s Hot Sauce, and the usual spices sprinkled on the grilled Vidaila onion (at least 1/4 inch thick). Wait a minute, I hear the Jackson Five playing on that rad station (94.9). David Letterman and I are fans Tito. We think he is cool as a moose. Hey, Vic, get the Jackson Five back together, bring them to the Performing Arts Center, and let’s have a re-election party. I will give thanks for the Vidalia Onion Sandwiches (sort of like Jim Woods’s Tomatoe Sandwich Rallies of the past). I can hear the melodious victory sounds now…”Give me one more chance…” “ABC…123…” The voters are gonna give Lil Vic “one more chance.” The Lord do work in mysterious ways. Yes, He do. Yes, He do. Forgiveness, Baby! Forgiveness! A Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Yeah, that’s what we need in Clayco. We don’t need no Mark Elgart (the SACS Czar) from Alpharetta. Let him take care of his own house in Fulton. Didn’t they go through three superintendents in about three or four months? The one from Minnesota lasted only about three months. I don’t think he could handle the egregious micro-managing and went back to Minnesota. Hypocrisy. Wow. The Georgia Accrediting Commission. Good alternative to the snooty SACS? GAC has been around since 1904, and the Georgia Statutes (OCGA 20-3-519) recognize the GAC (like SACS) for the Hope Scholarships. The Lord do work in mysterious ways. Yes, He do. Yes, He do. Forgive my typos, but the onion sandwich is calling! The Rev.

I lived in Clayton for 12 years, and moved out in summer 2006. It has really become somewhat of a slum simply because the people who care about their homes and community safety are now outnumbered by people who desire to resurrect their way of life in the begone housing projects of Atlanta, New Orleans, Mexico, etc.! The continuous roadblocks, aggressive warrant-serving, and relentless traffic stops may deter some criminals. And the reportedly POW camp-atmosphere in the jail may deter even more. But there’s more to law enforcement than that, and there needs to be a broader apporoach to this catastrophic crime problem. First of all, the Sheriff’s Office and Police Deartment need to be combined. Streamlining makes things much more effective and efficient. Then the Sheriff needs to listen to the citizens; form citizen committees and actually listen to what the people who live in Clayton have to say. Hire more officers, get the illegal imigrants out, and instead of putting everyone on probation, make the District Attorney do what her job is supposedto be about-locking up criminals! A full jail equals less crime, Ms. Scott! In the saga that has become Clayton’s crime problem, Jewel Scott shares much of the blame. Her lackluster performance is directly tied to Hill’s ego. And if you want Hill out, then you need to vote Jewel Scott out as well.
While Mr. Hill is aggressive, I think his arrogance is getting in the way of effective leadership. In any case, whether it be Hill or anyone else, the next Sheriff better listen to the people, and seek to make criminals do time as opposed to walking through the revolving door of the probation system. My opinion? Keep Hill accountable and if he reduces the ego, let him stay; on the other hand, get Jewel Scott out of office! She lets murderers get out on bond.

In defense of Victor Hill, it’s alot more than just taking drugs from those transporting it that has to occur. Prosecution, proactive efforts, policy revision and enforcment, etc. are all important. How we address it goes from local up to Federal authorities. That is why it is imperative that our County Leadership learn to collaborate with eachother and communicate effectively as one - in purpose. We are all linked to the efforts of improving the county. But, this is the one area I am oppossed to Victor Hill. He likes to be a one man show. And because we have an ineffective DA, things don’t work properly.
Whether you know it or not, Atlanta is a major and key drug distribution center for Mexican Drug Trafficking Organizations. They’re strong and the control they have in the area is no doubt going to increase as they look to expand unless we put forth some significant proactive initiatives. Letting those from drug busts go without prosecution is nothing to be OK with. But prosecuting them is not the answer to stopping all trafficking either.
We must be ONE in purpose.

It really urks me to hear Clayton County citizens being upset with Sheriff Hill for firing police officers. I’ve been living in Clayton County for 11 years. The crime was getting worst. If Clayton County was all white, white citizens would have canned the police officers that were fired by Sheriff Hill long before he took office. They do not tolerate poor performace. We as Blacks allow the city government to keep poor performers in our school systems, in our law enforcement agencies, and in other areas of our city government. White people don’t have a problem firing or ousting city officials who do not perform. I’m sick and tired of our Black city officials sitting on their behinds collecting checks (ie Eldrin Bell), because they know we as Black do not put pressure on their behinds to perform. Kudos to Sheriff Hill for taking a stand for us. Sheriff Hill I’m speaking directly to you……”whatever you do, do not leave us. We need you in Clayton County. We need your leadership. Criminals need to fear our city government. I know you can’t clean it up all at once, but never give up trying.” Enough is enough. Thank you for caring enough about me and my family to take a stand aganist crime in Clayton county. I can’t give you one name of another Sheriff in the state of Georgia, but I can bet you that most metro Atlanta citizens can tell you the name of Clayton county Sheriff. The one thing they say is He don’t play!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brenda,
They know Victor Hill’s name because he is an idiot. His name is the punch line to so many jokes it’s pathetic. He is not known for his accomplishments. Check out his employment history, it’s a joke. He never had a good review in any of the police departments he worked in here in Georgia and South Carolina.
Also, Victor Hill is not part of any “city” government. He is part of the “county government”
I’ve lived in Clayton county for 30 years and the crime started increasing around the mid 90’s. In the last 4 years, it has sky rocketed.
Ever since Tweedle Dee (Victor Hill) and Tweedle Dum (Jewell Scott) took office. What good is a bust without prosecution. It does not deter the dealers from coming back, if anything it attracts them. Well, we “might” get busted but we won’t get prosecuted and go to jail vs Dekalb county where they “might” get busted and but if they do, they are prosecuted.
4 years ago the citizens of Clayton county voted out of office the most succesful district attorney, Bob Keller, with the best win/loss record in the state of Georgia. He was also longest sitting district attorney ever in the state of Georgia.
He lost based on the color of his skin because it was obviously not because of experience.
Please when we vote this year, look at the experience, the type of leadership and the character of all the candidates. Don’t look at the color of the skin. Don’t allow someone with poor character and little experience get elected to these positions that effect every aspect of our quality of life.

It’s ok for us to differ. You see an idiot, I see a man who standing up for crime in Clayton County. Go ahead and call it like it is. The crime rate in Clayton County went up when we moved in. Yep! I know it. But now one of us is trying to clean it up without being a good ole boy. Sheriff Tuggle could care less about the crime in Clayton County. Less face it, it was N words killing N words. As long as we didn’t take our mess to the other side (white side) of Clayton county, he didn’t care. As long as we left our junk in Riverdale and Jonesboro, he didn’t care. What I see in Sheriff Hill is a man who tells criminals and his deputies, I don’t give a rats &*# if you call the media on me, I’m going to clean it up. I see a man who has seized drugs and closed down Spas that probably were exploited women. Excuse me for taking up for him. Clayton County has real crime. DRUGS,MURDER, GANGS etc. Unfortunately, Clayton County’s crime is a bit different from Beverly Hills, where the Sheriff can be a down home picture perfect guy. You know in Beverly Hills, crime is running the red light. Look if you think some intellectual little law person can come in the Clayton County and clean it up, you are going to get him and his deputies killed. You talk about Sheriff Hill being arrogant, he better be. The gangs and drug dealers don’t respect authority. Whomever on this blog talking about Kem, you are killing his or her chances. You are making him/her sound like they need to be running for office in Alpharetta or Beverly Hills. We need a brother with some back bone and some ba^^s. Look them dealer and gangs and the eyes without blinking. Thats what we are talking about. Take that boy scout stuff to the north side.

As a Clayton resident and state law enforcement officer, I have to go with Victor. Although he has cost the taxpayers some money (most of which is covered by insurance through ACCG), he will get my vote. I have personally seen him in action with my squad from way back when he was a regular street cop. Unfortunately, Kem Kimbrough is a friend of mine and although he is probably the most “ready” candidate for Sheriff, as a law enforcement officer, I will have to vote to keep Victor in.
As for officer morale, it is improving according to some of my buddy’s who work at the jail and on patrol. However, that always happens when someone new at the top comes in and shakes things up. It happened in m,y state agency anmd happens everywhere in law enforcement. As far as the 27 deputies that got fired and ultimately won the lawsuit agains Victor and the County, Victor went about it the wrong way, but ALL sheriff’s in this state clean house. It just doesn’t get the publics attention. With that said, many of those same deputies previously said that they wouldnt work for Victor if he was elected, WELL, he was, so they had to eat those words. One of them was my sister in law, but she shouldnt have been vocal about who she would or wouldnt work for when she needs a paychech just like the rest of us.
Just my opinion, from a seasoned law enforcement officers perspective. Peace!

Victvor Hill, Jewel Scott, and the whole school board are living proof of what happens when the ignorant and weak minded are allowed to vote.
An educated and informed voter (unlike walking small’s tiny cadre of paid cheerleaders) is the KEY for preventing the CORRUPT AND INCOMPETENT occupying public office!
Quit letting your jackleg preachers do your thinking for you. Be educated and informed on election day AND THINK FOR YOURSELF!

JDawson,
Finally! I truly appreciate your feedback and you are the FIRST person to share meaningful dialogue with substance in support of Victor Hill - which I have been waiting for. I agree with most of what you have shared and do understand he received some very poor legal advice in the beginning (which I hope he’d admit he would have done things differently). Given your perspective, I am interested in knowing why Victor Hill would be your choice as a law enforcement officer and what he brings to the table.
I don’t mean to put you on the spot and you certainly don’t have to share, but I am looking for something other than “he has a backbone” to use in deciding my vote. Thank you in advance.

My only question is why does a county sheriff need as many stars on his uniform as Eisenhower had when he was making the world safe for western civilization as we know it at Normandy?
When Victor rolls up in his tank to an adult toy store, I don’t even want to think about what the D in his “D-Day” will stand for LOL

The grass-roots are growing and Police Lt. Garland Watkins is expereincing a swell of citizen-voters.
Lt. Watkins, Registered candidat for Sheriff, has a long and untainted history in law enforcement.
He recently has been speaking at many events as an invited guest and has received numerous accolades concerning his future vision for the Sheriff’s Dept and Personnel once he takes the helm.
When he spoke at the organization I attend, he stressed the points that we want in a Sheriff. Consider Lt. Garland Watkins as our next Sheriff.

Napoleon Hill should be run out of the county. He has cost us taxpayers untold millions of dollars. He has little leadership ability and has an ego that’s never been seen before in this county’s history of elected officials. Busts? Those dens of inequity massage parlors? I had never seen more than one car parked at any of them; most of the time the parking lots were empty. Busts? Closed one poker parlor because the idiot owner offered him some chump change. Now he’s gone and bought lawn care equipment. Do you know of any sheriff’s department in the whole country that keeps the grass cut on “our major thoroughfares”? That latest “quality of life” issue is explained in Little Napoleon’s latest newsletter; a newsletter paid for by us taxpayers; a newsletter with his name all over it, just like the signs, billboards, and large letters on the department’s cars. Truthfully, I’m for the consolidation of the sheriff’s and police departments; but not with Victor Hill’s ego in charge of it all. We get what we deserve when we vote for him or the incompetents at the board of education. We need someone with management skills and meaningful experience in law enforcement. That leaves Victor Hill out of the equation.

Ex-spook,
Voting based on color and advocating others to vote only on color = ignorant and weak-minded. We all know that was the agenda for most in 2004. No sense denying it. Just admit it was a mistake and let’s move on so it gets fixed.
And as far as the White House is concerned, there’s Congress. Where’s the checks and balances for our DA and others in office who make decisions for the County? Big difference.

Sisters and Brother: All we are saying is give peace a chance. Remember the Summer of Love, 1967, Haight Ashbury, a flower in your hair? Let this be the Summer of Clayco Love. Yes, Lil Vic may have made many mistakes. Haven’t we all? “For all have sinned [past tense] and come short [present, continuous tense] of the glory of God.” Do we have short memories? Do we not remember other politicians of different persuasions who systematically discriminated against some people for non-meritorious reasons? Does this make any discrimination right? No, by no means! Let’s hold hands and sing. Everyone now…Synamon (Look At Me; I’m Important — From Detroit) Baldwin, Bob (I’ll Keep Running Until I Finally Win Something; “Put A Brother In The House!”) Hartley, David (Please Give Me A Real Estate Job In The School System) Barton, David (Why Am I Still Living In Gwinnett?) Reed, Rod (Come, SACS, Come; Aren’t You Glad That I Brought You SACS) Johnson, t williams (and 18 other lovely personalities), Black Woman in Clayco, Attn: Clayton Parents, Give-em-the-Boot Continuous Poster, Eldrin (I’ll Make My Career Hatin’ On Lil Vic) Bell, “Dr.” Lee (I’ve Got The Money To Run For What I Darn Well Want To Run For) Scott, John (Dr. Evil Svenghali) Trotter, Wade (One Day I’m Gonna Quit Hidin’ Behind Political Skirts) Starr, Mike (Gail B.) Glanton, The Peskie Judge Teske, Glenn (See My New Bentley) Dowell, The Riverdale Roughin’ Ruffin, Rick (Lil Charley) Scoggins, and all my fellow reprobates…Let’s hold hands and sing, “Give peace a chance,” and when the elections come around again, let’s knock the h-ll out of each other! After all, we don’t have a country club or any other communal/social outlet. One of these days, perhaps Clayco will have Steeplechasing, a museum like the one located on the the Highs’ old property on Peachtree Street, a Piedmont Driving Club, a garden club, perhaps even a Jack & Jill chapter. Boule, anyone? Gridiron Society, anyone? Elections, anyone? Yeah, that’t more our style! Nos somos pobre em dinheiro mas rica em espirito!

The good news is, most of my executive staff is stabbing me in the back and supporting Kimbrough. The other half is supporting Watkins.
Because of how I act and mistreat people, i’m on an island all by my tiny self.
My staff are like pretty SEASHELLS surrounding the island waiting for me to take a swim so they can nip at my toes.
But since i’m iiin-viince-eee- baal (with that hilarious voice of mine)it won’t hurt a bit! Nothing matters!

Marc, my brother: As you know, the church (eklesia) is located in our hearts, and it is headquartered, of course, in Heaven. But, I think that I know what you are asking. I believe that you want to know of a specific geographatical location where some of the saints gather on, say, Sunday morning for fellowship and worship. Well, right now, we are checking our a few storefronts. (Didn’t Rev. Dollar start off in the Jamestown Shopping Center in the East Point area? Hey, it ain’t where your church begins but where it is currently journeying.) Our official name is The Hosea Williams Church of World Peace & Reconciliation Beginning in Clayco. We love honoring one of God’s beloved rascals who did much good throughout his days from 1926 to 2000. (Most Americans do not realize even to this day that Reverend Williams earned a Purple Heart fighting the Nazis.) You might ask: “Can anything good come out of Clayco?” Good question. The hooty-snooty religious leaders of Jesus’ day asked the same about Nazareth, didn’t they? Marc, my brother, Clayco is perhaps the New Nazareth. The people are “rough and ready” (the old name, I believe, for Jonesboro), but more pure in heart than the love WITH dissimulation which flows freely from the press releases from SACS (located in the toney Lullwater/Emory area), the Commerce Club, the Capital City Club, the editorial desks of some of our high-tone journals, or press secretaries of politicians. Clayco…The Target Too Easy To Miss! When you beat up on Clayco, you salve your conscience. Marc, who are my brothers? All my brothers whose parents did not have the money to send them to Pace, Woodward, Marist, Lovett, Westminster, or MaCallie (sp?). No, my Clayco brothers (black and white) went to Brown in West End, Roosevelt/Southside off Boulevard in Cabbagetown, Therrell, or Doug, and ended up in Clayco. Their children go to Riverdale, Jonesboro, Mr. Zion, Lovejoy, Morrow, Forest Park, Mundy’s Mill, and North Clayton. Real people. Real problems. Real love. Real character. They don’t need no Alpharetta/Lullwater Mark Elgart (the SACS Czar) messing with the HOPES of their children. They also don’t need him to try to change the personalities of our red-blooded board members (Sandra Scott, David Ashe, Eddie White, and others) and turn them into tight-a_ rubber-stamping (as long as you get my brother-in-law the light fixtures contract, I’ll do as you say) board members like in so many school systems. I want Sandra Scott raising hll about Rod Johnson’s legislator-wife double-dipping during the legislative session — and let’s see if Interim Superintendent Gloria Duncan is going to stop it. I want Norreese Haynes raising h_ll about the eight or so million dollars which was wasted on the now infamous land deal. That’s money that could have been used for the Children of Clayco — perhaps even to purchase them band uniforms (instead of wearing the pitiful-looking tee-shirts). Remember Hosea Williams. Everyone wants to honor him now, but the power-that-were at the time wanted to wring his neck! The Good Master asked the people which of prophets that they were then honoring did not their ancestors murder in past. Our board members may not have attended Charm School off of East Paces, but they have good “horse sense.” That’s more than I can give to the head-nodders on the other school boards who perhaps imbibe on wine and cheeze with Mark Elgart at his SACS Seminars. Isn’t it time for Clayco to consider one of the alternative accrediting agencies? Perhaps SACS is too blue for us. Our blood runs red in Clayco. Reconciliation, my Clayco Sisters and Brothers! Peace.

Brenda,
How dare you assume my race, beliefs and accuse me of being a racist based on the simple fact that I have lived here for over 30 years. Do you think that this county was all white until the mid 90’s? Do you think that there were no black people in the county in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s? What p** me off is people like you who make assumptions and accusations when you have no idea about what or whom you are talking about. And I can and will do something about what’s going on in my home, my county. I can and do vote, I do volunteer work in my community with kids trying to make some kind of change, to help the kids, both black and white, realize another way of life.
I also think we need a strong man, and I don’t care if he’s black or white, to help clean up this county. We don’t need anyone who “struts”(not structs) his stuff on TV. Strutting your stuff is not a sign of strength, in fact it is a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of a man who has an ego bigger than the county in which he lives.
And you are right, it is ok for us to differ. That’s our right to have different opinions. You see what you see in Victor Hill and I see a man who has cost this county millions of dollars and along with the school board, the district attorney’s office and the county commissioners have weakened property values substantially. I see my quality of life declining. I see 5 people in front of the Riverdale Walmart being arrested and put in a police car. I see front doors being dead bolted in the middle of the day on Saturday when you used to be able to and still should be able to keep them unlocked. I see 5 undercover police officers in my driveway where they have chased 2 guys in a car that just robbed a house in another subdivison around Christmas and they tried to get away by cutting through my side yard and ended up hitting my neighbors house head on. Trying pulling up to that and then you tell me what sucks.
And just so that you know, Stanley Tuggle lived in Jonesboro, off of Jodeco Road, so I am pretty sure he kept the crime out of Jonesboro.
I see a man who cannot garner the respect of his deputies. A good leader will be respected by his subordinates. e should care about what his deputies think and feel. By doing this he will gain their respect and person will be over backwards to do their best for a person they respect.
Victor Hill is the one calling the media. He loves it, it strokes his little ego to see his face on the TV. I don’t see a man who criminals fear. they might get busted but they are not prosecuted and they go right back out on the streets and do it again. It’s part of the game to them. He raided the spas and not 1 person was charged in those raids. And in 1 of those raids there was evidence of some of the women being part of a slave trade, but no one was prosecuted.
Also, I don’t care if you excuse me or not but I am sick and tired of people not looking at the whole picture, only what they see on the TV or only looking at a person’s skin tone and not researching the candidates.
And I also, like you, am sick and tired of our civil servants, our elected official, not doing their jobs and just collecting a paycheck

Good Morning, my Fellow Reprobates: I want to remind all my Sisters and Brothers about the Big Banquet which is being sponsored by The Hosea Williams Church of World Peace and Reconciliation Beginning in Clayco. We are trying to secure t williams and Synamon Baldwin as two of the main speakers (a little reconciliation so far, heh?).
The most prestigious award will be The Hatin’ On Clayton Award, given to that citizen of Georgia which our committee feels, through his or her actions and rants, have caused the most “damage” (we use this word lightly because we firmly believe in the mantra that what doesn’t kill us in Clayco only makes us stronger) to our Beloved Clayco. The nominees are: 1. Mark Elgart of SACS; 2. Rod Johnson, the “goof ball” who called for SACS to bring back its occupation forces to Clayco, especially when his hands aren’t clean; 3. Lyle Harris of the AJC editorial board who is always trotted out to hate on Clayco but he gives us great pub; 4. David Barton who audaciously blames his former opponent and her colleagues on the school board for plummetting house sales in Southside Atlanta (are they also responsible for the problems of Homebanc and Countrywide throughout the country?); 5. Bob Hartley who apparently will try to fan the flames of any Clayco controversy in hopes of becoming the “Chairman” of this new controversy, hoping that this will launch his political career which has never gotten off the ground; and 6. Dan Colwell who is apparently still licking his wounds in Peachtree City and still steaming and ruminating about how the ladies on the school board chose to go into a another direction and he was not in their plans.
Yes, it is time for peace and reconciliation! “All we are saying is ‘Give Peace A Chance.’” P.S. Someone tried to nominate Jim Wooten for the above award, but protests emerged from all quarters of the nominating room. The consensus was that Mr. Wooten has that Clayco Spirit. He is a Willingham Boy, and there is not a Lanier bone in his body.

Rev. Bourbon, Weren’t you preaching in Queens at one time?
Please let me know about definite plans about the banquet. I would actually like to meet you. Any Onion Sandwiches going to be served at the Banquet?
Why is that Superintendent Jamie Wilson leaving Fulton County? Is the Board quietly micromanaging him? Maybe they are just more “quiet” than our Clayco Board. It seems that Mr. Mark Elgart of SACS should check into that home board of his. “Quiet Riot,” heh? (Maybe my memory of this hard metal band is giving away my age.) Rev. Bourbon, I enjoy your “rants.” Right on, Rev.!

When it comes to the Hatin on Clayton award winner number three, Lyle Harris of the AJC editorial board, I can say only one thing: The blogsphere is doing its job.
In his last editorial, he trotted out the name of a certain organization (and individuals associated with that organization) as the cause of all of Clayton’s woes. (I’m surprised he didn’t blame the drought on that organization)
But notice the difference in his last editorial? Notice how he only spoke in general terms and didn’t “name names”? That’s because he knew the blogsphere is watching, and would call him to the carpet for his blatant failure to name, oh I don’t know, the board member who threw the ENTIRE system under the bus by calling SACS in the first place. You know the one who KNOWINGLY hired an accused child molester. You know the one whose wife has been ILLEGALLY double dipping.
No this time, (much as he probably couldn’t stand it) he couldn’t trot out any names because then the blogsphere would skewer him for the names he HASN’T called out, and the AJC editorial board would have even less relevance than it has now it Clayton…if that’s even possible
You know it just pains him that, much as the AJC might try to bury it, the ENTIRE story is coming out on who the REAL micromanagers are on the board, and ironically, their very own blogs are bringing the sunlight to it.
