Can Clayton lure new businesses?

A few new businesses are trickling into Clayton County. At a time when much of the attention is focusing on problems in the school system, it’s refreshing to learn new jobs are being created. Read my latest blog entry on Wordpress

S.O.S. = Save our schools?

And some thought former superintendent Barbara Pulliam was the problem.

For the second time in less than five years, Clayton County public schools may lose its accreditation.

If this happens again, certain board of education members should be recalled because they obviously are not doing the job for which they were elected.

Another loss of accreditation will definitely hurt our kids’ future and further affect already declining property values.

According to news reports, students who graduate from districts that are not accredited will be ineligible for many college scholarships, including HOPE. This can also affect a student’s chance of being accepted into some colleges at all, further limiting their possibilities.

A loss will also affect teacher salaries, making it virtually impossible to retain and keep quality educators (which allegedly is already an issue, why make it worse?)

Do the children of Clayton who want to get an education need any more obstacles in their path?

Like it or not though, Clayton’s BOE is not solely to blame.

More parents need to be proactive about their children’s schooling, and stay on educators and the board members they elected to do the right things.

I recently attended a PTA meeting. Including moderators, there were 23 people in attendance. Eleven of them were kids.

Parental apathy tells your child’s educators and elected officials that they can get away with whatever they like because nobody is paying attention or cares, and there will be no consequences for their actions.

But this situation is primarily about political infighting, personal agendas and some board members’ inability (refusal?) to work together to improve CCPS.

Is it time to clean house at the board of education and elect people who are actually committed to education?

I attended the first board meeting after Caldwell was removed and remember distinctively Nedra Ware standing up, waving her arms, and shouting, “There’s a new sherrif in town now!” It was like a Jerry Springer episode. Even though some of the faces have changed since then, the attitudes and behaviors of most have not.

But it’s like you said, Kimberly. Apathy from parents, students, and the community as a whole. As long as no one is endangering taking away HOPE money, no one really cares. In a school of 1400, our PTA meetings rarely exceeded 50 parents.

Quite frankly, if you look back at when the trouble started, it all began when MACE got involved! There goal was to move people into the community and take over the school board, and that’s what they have done. If you look at their website, it’s purely hateful propaganda that reflects there actions on the school board. Get rid of them, and things will become respectable again.

I don’t live in Clayton County, but I hope the county will do something about the wave of crime and the school system that is on the verge of losing its accredidation. It is sad to see people on top who don’t work together and be a leader. I say look at What Cobb County is doing in General. Cobb County has it all together in alot of ways. The demograpics had changed some, but the leaders are still doing their job to keep the place great. Cobb County has good schools too. We had one Superatendent who did things that the people didn’t approve of. When he stepped down and someone else stepped in, things approved. I was looking at a special section from the Maraitta Daily Journal. It was about the celebration of 175 years of Cobb County. One city mayor was selfless and gave the person who did the work credit. The reason why Cobb is so good, the leaders work together and do the job. By the way, I live in Cobb County. If Clayton starts working together and put the egos away, maybe Clayton can get somewhere.

Kimberly, I feel sorry for you. I have read quite a few of your articles & you seem to care about your community. Too bad you made the mistake of moving to Clayton. You should relocate to a better part of GA, that area does not seem like a good fit for you or anyone else who cares about their community. I wish you and your family luck in the future, you are gonna need it!

I have to agree with Alan. By “certain” I assume you mean at least Ericka Davis, Noresse Hayes & Rod Johnson, who should definitely hit the road.

Actually, if they truly cared about our children’s education, they would resign. But their egos will not allow that.

But all the others on that board, sitting around watching this happening without comment, need to go as well. NONE of them seem to be working in the best interest of our children or our county.

Good riddance to the lot of them (or who we can get rid of) in the 2008 election!!

I will not pretend that I know the all the answers to the problems here in our community. Nor will I pass judgment on those in power in our community. However I do know that change begins with self. We must first honestly evaluate our own motives to ensure that truth and righteousness are at the center of our motivation. But what is the next step to enact change? What can a concerned mother do to make a difference?

The road may be hard to travel but not impossible.

Don’t want judge those in power? When a person runs for office, he/she is putting their life out there for everyone to see … and judge.

And if he/she doesn’t do the job they were elcted to do, they open themselves up for more scrutiny and judgment.

No wonder Clayton is so screwed up! You people don’t even want to hold the officials you elect accountable for their actions, or lack thereof in this case.

The future of the County is only as good as the preparation of the next generation of. It appears that the fine educators of Clayton County need the “interested advocates” to take charge of the taxpayer’s best interest. The education of our children should not be pandered with and the way that the Clayton County School Board has neglected and abused their fiduciary responsibility is appalling. The taxpayers of this County have hired you to work for us and we once again have a disgusting report. Shame on all of you, your ego has nothing to do with your pleasure to serve, however my ego is to ensure that my and (our) children are afforded a functional learning environment. It appears that the only way for this to occur is that YOU ALL be recalled. Obviously Public Service is not your calling. Do not utilize our tax dollars for your personal arrogance and insidious ego trips, the price which we have to pay is to great. See you at the “recall”. Let’s get the petitions rolling. The power belongs to the people who wish to utilize it. Times UP.

I notice everytime something goes wrong like for instance with the (school board) we always want to blame someone else for the mishaps. The bottom line is that we as parents need to get educated about our children’s future. How many of us as parents take time to go to and visit school board meetings to voice our opinions or listen to the issues that are affecting our children’s education?

I contend, not many. Thus, the members of the school board should be held accountable for their bickering however, if we as parents educate ourselves about the policies and procedures of the board and step up to the plate a lot of this can be avoided.

Let’s bring peace to our county and school board and as concerned parents start attending school board meetings so we can be advocates in our children’s lives.

Holding a person accountable(Accountable:Answerable, Responsible) is different from passing judgment( Judgment:to form an authoritative opinion) Advancement will not be made by passing judgment. Only through honest communication (Without taking others opinions personally) and holding those in office ACCOUNTABLE can we begin to gather ideas about how to solve the issues at hand. Thank you for starting this forum, especially since the Clayton News Daily no longer allows free speech. #1-the whole school board needs to go.

2-the central office needs to dump all those scripted programs and the so called consultants back where they came from. Then maybe we can go back to having a quality education. 3-central office needs to clean house, they are overloaded with folks who prod the school administrators into becoming dictators. Maybe they need to get back into the classroom themselves as teachers, instead of telling teachers that everything they do is wrong. 4-parents need to get involved, take an interest in their child’s education, and start teaching their children respect.

Rachel Smith, Are you kidding me. Under Dr. Pulliam’s reign, or property values plummeted, CRCT failure rates reached over 30% failure, budget increased $100,000,000 dollars, (that is One Hundred Million) and our SAT scores are worst than any other in the Metro area and just about the worst in the state and country. Dr. Pulliam was out for her and her sorority sisters and family members. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER; Your hear me? She never supported the teachers or the administration. She Never addressed the children’s behavior problems in classrooms and NEVER cared about Clayton County in a whole. I personally heard her say that southerners are stupid. I think that’s the problem. Everything that Pulliam did and the board has done has been about race and what’s beneficial to them. If we won’t to fix this, we need to be a community, to be one, not just whites, hispanics, and African Americans.

Second time in five years??!! Where are the parents and black leadership of this County? Do they not care? They should be calling for their jobs, insisting that they resign, and the churches asking members to go out on the streets petitioning for recalls? If it wasn’t for Haynes teachers this year wouldn’t have the ability to remove disruptive students from the class without them being brought back in the class moments later. If people really care about CCPS spend some money and do some open records requests and see the corruption of micro-managing at the hands of Davis and Johnson. Emails don’t lie!!! As a student of CCPS, I am upset and outraged about what is going. This is absolutely ridiculous. I am a junior at Jonesboro High School and third in my class. I was really worried when I read in the AJC article that students in school systems that are not accredited are not eligible for the HOPE Scholarship. It is not fair that a bunch of grown people, who want to fuss and fight among each other, have the ability to hold me back along with all CCPS students. Most of our students rely on HOPE in order for us to have the chance to go to college. If we lose accreditation it basically makes my diploma (which I have worked so hard for) worthless. I hope that this can be worked out or I will be begging my parents to transfer me.

Where is SACS when it comes to examining the evidence that Rod Johnson KNOWINGLY hired an accused CHILD SEXUAL PREDATOR as a “bodyguard” to work for Clayton Schools?

Where is SACS when it comes to examining the Open Records request that has CONFIRMED that Rod Johnson’s wife has been illegally “double dipping” from Clayton County schools, drawing her salary while away at the state capital during the General Assembly session?

SACS is actually entertaining the accusations of a man, Rod Johnson who is so DESPERATE to deflect attention from his own misdeeds he actually accused a fellow board member of taking a “ten million dollar bribe”? (And by the way, since the AJC reported the accusation, why haven’t they reported that Rod Johnson TOTALLY and PUBLICLY recanted?)

I don’t think most Clayton parents give a rat’s a$$ what kind of cheesecake a board member may have ordered…but you think they just MIGHT care about the evidence that Rod Johnson KNOWINGLY hired an accused child sexual predator to a position that could involve DIRECT contact with children?

Let’s see: Cheesecake; CHILD SEXUAL PREDATOR. Which one do you think Clayton parents ought to concern themselves with?

Sounds like Clayton parents might neeed to investigate just what exactly is motivating SACS, because it sure isn’t any “concern” for students.

It looks like to me Mr. Johnson knew his “behind” was about to be hung out on the line and wanted to take Mr. Haynes down before the allegations against him surfaced.

Also, T. Williams you keep hollering “John Trotter”. “Get a life,” John Trotter did not tell Rev. It is time for the voters in Clayton County to stand up and demand the resignation of each board member. Why would a board member ask SACs to come in for an investigation? Now, we truly see that board members are only concern about themselves, not the children of Clayton County. It is time for all to go. What about the board member that spent the taxpayer money to buy ribs, cheesecake, roomservice and high hotel bill…is this the same board member that went on for hours about textbooks? I am definitely voting against my board member, we need professional, business people on the board. Concerned Parent 2,

Yes I would say Duncan and Johnson are both to blame. But I would put to you that Duncan is to blame mainly for succumbing to the pressure that Johnson put on her.

I believe Johnson was behind this, in order to “keep tabs” on Duncan’s every move. The goal, according to those in the know, is that Johnson tried to foist an organization chart on Duncan that gave his wife a major promotion, and the bodyguard was just part of the intimidation tactics.

If this isn’t the case, what other legitimate reason would Rod Johnson have to “patrol” the CCPS central office with members of the Sheriff’s Dept.? Yet ANOTHER case of “double dipping” as Johnson was illegally drawing a paycheck from the Sheriff’s Dept. and the school board. (About the time the speculation about Johnson’s role in the bodyguard case started hitting the blogsphere, Johnson suddenly was no longer working in the Sheriff’s Dept. Coincidence?)

Trust me Concerned parent 2, there is much more to the Rod Johnson backstory than the AJC is reporting. The AJC reporter covering the school board has been made aware of things such as the Open Records request that has confirmed that Johnson’s wife was “double dipping”.

It will be interesting to see if this is reported on, or if the obvious editorial bias against MACE is such that she is forced to sit on the story.

t williams,

Once again you fail to refute ANYTHING said about Rod Johnson. And once again your facts are WRONG when it comes to Dr. Trotter.

The AJC reporter (and the Clayton Daily News) has already written about his role in KNOWINGLY hiring an accused child molester.

An Open Records request has already CONFIRMED Johnson’s wife has been “double dipping” from the board of ed while serving in the General Assembly.

And the owner of the “Give-em-the-boot” website has a resturant full of witnesses to prove that he is NOT John Trotter.

Since you have no FACTS or LOGIC to support your feeble attempts to clear Rod Johnson, I guess that’s why you have resorted to “the politics of personal destruction” when it comes to Norreese Haynes.

I say the politics of personal destruction because what you have posted is about as relevant as Norreese Haynes favorite color or favorite football team: they both have NOTHING to do with the board of ed, while everything I have posted on Rod Johnson is DIRECTLY related.

Again refute what I’ve said about his role in KNOWINGLY hiring an accused child molester, or his wife “double dipping” on the taxpayers’ dime. Or you run the risk of Clayton’s finest arresting you for TWI (typing while ignorant)

My questions is : WHO CARES ABOUT THE KIDS IN CLAYTON COUNTY?

Not anyone on the board especially Davis, and Haynes.

Not the interim superintendant.

Only a handful of teachers in the entire system.

A few Principals.(1 or 2)

Clayton County School SYstem is a place that makes someone who isnn’t qualified at all rich, and gives them titles they shouldn’t have.

Most in management or board positions wouldnt have their position in any other school system.

The SACS complaint is a GOOD thing, sometime things have to get REAL bad beforee there is change. Otherwise this is just a school system full of ego driven fakers. AND THE KIDS PAY THE PRICE.

T Williams you are hilarious.

Let’s deal with the facts.

  • The owner of www.give-em-the-boot.com is not John Trotter. I attended the Garland Watkins announcement party and met him for the first time. Looks nothing like John Trotter.

  • The facts not allegations against Rod Johnson are directly correlated to the CCSB. I really hope the AJC reads this blog and gets the real story.

  • The court cases you posted about Haynes aren’t CCSB related but personal matters.

  • Johnson and Davis were behind the CCPS land debaucle by overpaying for land and not following proper procedures to bring it before the board to discuss its purchase. The question is who got kickbacks?

  • Please deal with the facts that “Attn Clayton County Parents” has posted.

  • T. Williams lets get emotion out of this and deal with the facts. One of if not the biggest reason that people are leaving CC is because of the school system. Truth be told is that when the county became majority black we just voted black and put anyone without checking out who they were into office. We need to put competent people on the school board that aren’t thirsty for power and have integrity. I’ll give you that Haynes is close to Trotter, but the fact of the matter is that Haynes has exposed corruption and has made it easier for teachers to teach with his Teachers Bill of Rights being implemented. The truth of the matter is that concerned citizens uncovered Johnson’s and Davis’ micromanaging and corruption. Now that its exposed lets do right by our kids and our teachers and get these folks off the board that only see it as a cash cow for their own self aggrandizement.

inquiring minds rember how facts are Norreese Haynes went to Clayton SChool personnel demanding more students for Community Education Partners. More students means more money. Right? John Trotter?

    t williams,

“Inquiring minds” would like to see you deal with FACTS. But instead of refuting ANYTHING that has been posted about Rod Johnson’s actions, you want to claim that EVERY poster who has noted it is really Dr. Trotter.

The fact is, giving the state of public education in Georgia, a LOT of teachers resonate with the message of “you can’t have good learning conditions until you have good teaching conditions and that MUST include discipline”.

And given the discipline problems in Clayton, a lot of VOTERS are resonating with that message as well. How do you think Haynes got elected in the first place?

Now I guess you’ll claim that EVERY voter who voted Norreese Haynes into office was really Dr. Trotter and EVERY teacher who has joined MACE is really Dr. Trotter.

What’s next, are you going to claim Michael Vick was railroaded because it was REALLY Dr. Trotter who ran the dog fighting ring?

Maybe you should call O.J. Simpson and tell him to come to Clayton County because none other that t williams has identified who “the REAL killer” is.

Maybe YOU are the imposter. Maybe you are REALLY Rod Johnson, seeing as, just like Rod Johnson, you have ZERO rebuttal for his role in KNOWINGLY hiring an accused child molester, and for Rod Johnson’s wife “double dipping” from the school board and the General Assembly.

Or maybe your simply an apologist for Rod Johnson, albeit a woefully unprepared one, as you have YET to refute any of the allegations exposed by the News-Daily, the AJC or the Open Records act that confirmed the “double dipping”.

Again t williams if you want ANY credibility show us evidence that is DIRECTLY related to Rod Johnson that makes a case he isn’t the real problem on the school board.

After you call O.J. of course…
