Can Clayton lure new businesses?
A few new businesses are trickling into Clayton County. At a time when much of the attention is focusing on problems in the school system, it’s refreshing to learn new jobs are being created. Read my latest blog entry on Wordpress

Do you appreciate your child’s teachers?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The 15th annual 2007 Teacher Appreciation Week runs May 6-12, and National Teacher Appreciation Day falls on May 8.
It’s easy to say teachers receive a paycheck so there is no need to show extra gratitude. But educators are obviously not in that line of work for the high pay, benefits and/or perks. Most people want to be recognized for their hard work and a job well done, why should teachers be any different?
The teacher appreciation’s website suggests giving a small gift every day during this week. One friend, her child and a few classmates baked their favorite teacher a cake. Even donating much-needed school supplies to your child’s classroom would be a nice gesture and ease personal expenses for that teacher.
There are also plenty of ways to show appreciation free of charge! Send an e-mail or e-card of thanks or better yet, thank educators in person! Have your child create something unique for the teacher, such as a drawing or a poem. Also, don’t forget the Sunday School teachers if your child attends!
Yes, I realize Clayton county schools are not top notch at the moment. There is plenty of blame to go around for that, and our educators are not solely responsible. But hopefully the dedicated teachers here will get recognized for their efforts, whether it be during Teacher Appreciation week or any other time during the school year, and continue to work in our school system. Clayton can’t afford to lose any more good educators.
Parents: Is there a teacher who has made a difference in your child’s life? If so, please share that teacher’s name, the school he/she works at and feel free to publicly thank them here. Will you or your child bring a gift for any teacher?
Teachers: Is Appreciation Week and/or Day celebrated at your school? Do you care about receiving recognition, or is teaching and watching children progress thanks enough for you?

Years ago I usually made at least one appearance at a local high school as a guest speaker for a particular event, as a result of my employment. I gave it up after a few years due to the behavior of students in general, which I found quite disrespectful towards not just myself but their teachers and others. I can only imagine what today’s teachers must put up with for the sake of the few who are there to truly learn. Do I appreciate them for doing a job no one else wants and for a salary that can’t compensate them for what they must endure? YES!!

Yeah I appreciate them, as long as they actually teach. I once had a music teacher that cursed out the class the first day of school and told us she was not there to be our mother or babysitter. Of course she didn’t teach anything to us all year. Being middle school kids, we didn’t care anyway. It was an opportunity to do homework from the other classes. She was the meanest teacher I ever had.
My children’s teachers have been pretty good so far thru the third grade.

I am very happy with all my children’s teachers,Since my kids started school, I am always involved in the school, It is the only way you know what is going on in the schools, people want to complain but never visit the schools or their childrens classrooms, I have always appreciated my childrens teachers, Some give it there all, they go out of there way to help the kids…I have always taught my kids to respect… And that is one thing the teachers have always appreciated about my kids… If you teach your kids to respect and always be ready to learn, The teacher have no choice but to do what they love to do and get paid for…. TO TEACH….

I have had memorable teachers and my daughter has had the same experience - particularly in elementary school. Unfortunately, we’ve not figured out a way to adequately compensate them or maintain high standards of excellence.

My children have had the best teachers at Brown Elementary, I cannot tell you how important it is to know the teacher. I have nothing but good things to say about the teachers there. My hat goes off to all the teachers at Brown Elementary. Keep up the good work!

While I do appreciate the teachers and their efforts, I don’t appreciate their method of teaching. There was a time when teachers actually taught our children and they taught all subject. Teachers weren’t specialized in a certain subject and you never heard your homeroom teacher say let me get someone that can help because I don’t teach match, I teach science. That’s because your homeroom teach was your teacher and he/she actually taught every subject! Now-a-days they merely assign work and hand out homework. Is it me or does Georgia have the laziest school system in America? I feel like I’m the teacher! Hell, they should be giving me a gift since I’m the one doing the teaching. I can’t tell you how many times, my child has come home on a Monday afternoon with an assignment that’s due Wednesday, two days later! Not only does the assignment require going to the library that’s closed before I get off work but also requires supplies that are not commonly found around the house, so I have to speeding down the highway doing 90 miles an hour to reach the nearest School Box before it closes. Then return home and keep my child up all hours of the &@#! night so he can get the darn thing completed on time. And lets not mention the heap of work from his other teachers including homework from the educated misfit that game him the *assignment to begin with! Maybe the next time you write about teachers, Ms. Allen, try writing about the lack of teaching thereof and see how to get me their paycheck.

My boys are grown, with their own children, but I appreciated their teachers very much. Unlike today, they also had parental backing. All three graduated from Forest Park, which was a good school.
I know some teachers and give them all the credit due them. One even has a “psycho mom” who gets very angry when her son misbehaves. My friend has the principal come to her room when she sees her. This is a 1st grade class in Henry Co,
